  1. Just finished a few books while I was in the field doing research (sun sets at 6pm and no electricity so lots of time to read in the tent via headlamp).

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena -- great, heart-breaking novel about the recent Chechnya-Russian conflict.

The Bees -- fictional account of bees in a bee hive that very surprisingly works and I learned a lot about bees (would make a great animated film)

The Gone Away World -- excellent and funny post-apocalypse fiction with ninjas and mimes and the like

The Numbers Game -- great "money ball" type analysis applied to soccer

The Power of the Dog -- long and really compelling, violent, crime novel about the USA-Mexico drug trade and narcos

  2. I'm on my way to Madagascar for 5 weeks but had a nice stop off in Paris and got to see some good rugby, including England vs. Canada in the final game (my girlfriend is the manager of the US women's national team so she got me a ticket). Lots of fun and a great atmosphere. Women's rugby has come a long way and the stadium was pretty packed, particularly for the France-Ireland game before the England game. I'd post a photo but I can't from my crappy phone. Anyways, we fly to Madagascar tomorrow (she also is a lemur researcher as well). See you all later.

  3. Decent read, not sure if I agree with the comparison to the NY Mets; someone here on this forum made a better analogy with the Oakland A's; Everton find young talent, or take old talent and make it better, then sell off the talent. But analogies are American sports writer's favorite "go-to" heuristic device when writing about soccer...they sound clever at first but are generally useless.

The comment section on that thread is atrocious.

  4. Welcome agbaby. Sounds like you all can start a Des MoinesToffees affiliate.

I grew up in Chicago and went down state to Champaign-Urbana for college, but now I live in Virginia.

Iowa/Illinois, so flat you can watch your dog run away for 3 days. (old joke)

  5. i love that he goes in a spurs fan and comes out an arsenal fan. not sure why so many americans like spurs really. i know freidel (american) plays for them, but i just don't get it. maybe the 1 year dempsey played with them everyone converted or something.

Agree, it is strange, I seem to run into more Spurs fans than any other.

  6. Started playing when I was 5 or 6 in mexico, then played recreational leagues in my town (Chicago suburbs) throughout my childhood. There were outdoor leagues and several indoor leagues so you could play all year. The most competitive I got was playing in high school--we were decent. Then in college went back to playing recreational leagues. Took a break from playing when I moved to Cape Cod and Boston, but now I out in western Virginia and there are tons of recreational leagues, so I've been playing year-round (indoor/outdoor) for the last five years. I'm 44 so I'm gonna have to retire soon I reckon. I mostly play defense now, but was a winger when I was younger.

So nothing very serious in a competitive way, save for high school, but always enjoyable.

And I should add, in looking at this thread, there is some impressive dossiers here.
