The Beard
Is it true that only the top 5 finishers in the league are guaranteed a European place next season? I think I heard someone saying that as both Manchester clubs where drawn together, this means that Bolton or Stoke will get a Europa league place (providing City and United finish in top four). If that is correct it may wipe the smiles off the red faces yesterday when the draw was made, they where ecstatic when Utd and City where drawn together. rubecula
Yes its true. Top five finish or forget about Europe. Wonder if anyone will want to leave the reds at the end of the season?
MikeO
Yes its true. Wonder if anyone will want to leave the reds at the end of the season? They'd still be in it as defending champs if they were to win it this year.....so don't get too excited just yet.
The Beard
Just seen Sky Sports and tried to get my round around the explanation, it seems that the only way 6th place gets into Europe is if Man City finish 5th and also win the FA Cup. MikeO
...it seems that the only way 6th place gets into Europe is if Man City finish 5th and also win the FA Cup. If that happened the places would go to City, Birmingham and Stoke/Bolton. There's no way that sixth will get a place....barring something ridiculous like the winners of the Stoke/Bolton game making the top four. Mike, Sky saying that if City finish 5th but win the Cup, they get Europa place through winning Cup and 6th place gets last Europa slot...............all very confusing. marcopaulo
i always thought it was league first if you won a spot two ways

I think that's wrong....but the rules are a bit ambiguous (probably to give the authorities the maximum scope to give Liverpool a place). Simple solution is us picking up twenty-seven points to end with sixty-four....that'll be enough for fifth and all confusion will be forgotten . Matt
fair play award gives a European spot doesnt it?
MikeO
fair play award gives a European spot doesnt it? The top three leagues in the UEFA fair play table get a place (currently Norway, England and Sweden) given to the highest placed team in the league's own fair play table that don't qualify by another route. We're currently sixth in the fair play league but (crucially) behind Fulham and Blackpool. Need them to start getting a few red cards (and our lads need to play nice) .
