  2. 1. I bought some plum stones from a builders yard. They arrive grey, I check with the driver to make sure I'm not left with tonnes of not what I ordered.

He laughs, and says the viewing stones on display at the yard are behind perspex and varnished to give them the wet look.

Lo and behold, I wet someand they are the same. I wishI'd known about the varnishing trick before hand.

    2. I fitted a new keyboardto my laptop. The space button worksintermittently.

  3. Parent Kori Doty - a non-binary transgender person who identifies as neither male nor female - aims to allow the child to discover their own gender.

The health card has been issued with a "U" in the space for "sex", which could be for "undetermined" or "unassigned".

Kori Doty is fighting to omit the gender from the birth certificate.

The parent gave birth to Searyl Atli in November at a friend's home in British Columbia. Kori Doty, who prefers to use the pronoun they, argues that a visual inspection at birth is unable to determine what gender that person will have or identify with later in life.

The family's lawyer, barbara findlay, who chooses to spell her name without capital letters, told Global News: "The assignment of sex in this culture is done when a medical person lifts up the legs and looks at the baby's genitals. But we know that the baby's own gender identity will not develop for some years until after they're born."

  4. The Guardian ran an article about the UNESCO status of the docklands and whether it's at risk.

There are grand plans for a new ferry terminal, a “house of art, music and culture”, a new football stadium for Everton, and an athletes’ village for the city’s 2022 Commonwealth Games bid. But the only elements to have received detailed planning permission are a couple of private rented sector towers: the Lexington and the Hive.

There is scant reason for optimism, given that Peel – primarily an operator of docks and airports – was the developer of Salford’s MediaCityUK, the winner of the 2011 Carbuncle Cup for the ugliest building project in the country. “It’s a subjective thing,” says Ashworth. “The designs don’t necessarily have to please me – they just have to look different.”

The sprawling masterplan has been granted an unusually long planning permission period, until 2042. So, given the lull in the market, there is still time to make it better – if the council steps up and heeds Unesco’s warnings. But the Labour mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, has a hunger for growth and investment – and a disdain for outsider meddling, which doesn’t inspire much hope for radical improvement.

“Not one person who comes to visit our city comes to see the Unesco certificate on my wall,” he says. “They come to see a vibrant, dynamic city, not one that’s preserved in aspic. I’m a pragmatic person. I believe we can cherish our heritage and come up with great iconic modern buildings, too.”
