This logic makes no sense. So if Arsenal had fucked up the final three games of the season then it would mean Everton or Martinez did a better job? How does that make sense? How does evaluating Everton on things largely out of Everton's control make sense? In any other season, this team would be in the CL. They got unlucky. Shit happens. Like I said, this doesn't mean we should be SATISFIED with where we are, but the implication that this group is no different from what's been thrown in front of us the past 10 years is ridiculous.

No, we could have got knocked out in the qualifiers and finished. 7th next season. It 's happened before you know :/

Martinez has Moyes team has brought a breagh of fresh air in and freshened things up. Lets just see where we go from here before we start hailing the messiah

  2. The thing I like about Gibson is he always shows for the ball and 90% of the time his passes go forward rather than sideways.

He just controls play so well, his positional play is phenomenal, always seems to be in the right place at the right time, his awareness of what going on sround him is brilliant. Massively underated.

  3. All that you list is irrelevant..., it's league position and cup won that matters. In terms of last season we broke a few records but ended up in a similar position. Martinez has yet to trump Moyes on the things that matter. I think martinez may break the glass Moyes couldn't but to base progression on larger points taken doesn't sit up. That could be based on a number of things.

    Exactly.

And how is that so? Last season Everton earned 72 points. They hadn't surpassed since 1988. Last season Everton had 21 wins. They previously hadn't reached 20 wins since 1987, when it was a 42-game season. Maybe PRIOR to Martinez there was stagnation, but I don't see what relevance that has now. How anyone could look at what happened last season and determine that it's status quo is mind boggling.

It's one season. Lets see in 5 years if we 're any different eh because I guarantee you under this board we wont. It wont matter if we have our lord managing us, we can't go forward because we don't have the financial clout to allow it

When did I say you have no right to voice an opinion? What I said was that your opinions, which seem to almost exclusively be cynical and negative, are off-putting. Now, you or anyone else are perfectly free to call Roberto Martinez the next Hitler and tell Distin you hope he gets hit by a train. Nobody is trying to stop you. All I'm saying is that Everton had it's best season in well over a decade and currently own the best young CAM and CB in English Football as well as the fastest rising managers in the world, and if, in that kind of situation, 95% of one's thoughts tilt towards the negative side then it says less about the state of Everton and more about someone's miserable attitude towards anything and everything. Nobody is "satisfied" with a 5th place finish. But some of us realize that Everton were never going to jump from 7th-8th place finishes directly into the Champions' League Final. Progress is a good thing, even if it isn't the goal itself.

What you're missing here is this progression has been going on for ten years now, yes TEN years and we 'te still no further on than we were when we said we has started progression alll those years ago. That is why I said we were treading water. If you think thats negative then that's your call but I call it realism. One thing you need to learn mate if you're gonna follow us for another 40 years is to get real. Lets not polish a piece of shit and call it wood eh. A spade is a spade. We've been in this situation (5th to 7th) for over ten years. If you see that as progress, I seriously doubt you have the hang of it.

  6. Cracking player mate and made us tick the season before last. If he stays fit there's no reason why he can't push McCarthy and Barry all the way. We'll need him with the extra games.

Makes you wonder why Besic really but 4 is better than 3 I suppose. Nice to see him have a belting season and force his way through sgain. He controls play fantastically, can pick a pass and never gives it away and also likes a tackle

  7. I don't think it's going to matter now that we have a condensed schedule with Europe in the mix. I imagine that Jagielka and Distin will officially be "starters" but, especially with Distin being old and Jagielka being an injury risk, Martinez is going to be rotating often, I would think.

Jagielka is not an injury risk. He had an injury last season but before that he was virtually an ever present .

  8. Baines to centre midfield really is amusing. Sometimes I think Martinez does talk a bit of shite. But I willing to be proved wrong. I can not for the life of me see Baines playing in central midfield.

People say Lahm done it. Lahm is in a whole different league than Baines in terms of ball possession!

Totally agree, baines is not and never will be a central midfielder. If Martinez puts him there and proves me wrong then I'll be the first to hold my hands up but he is just not the type of player who could switch to central midfield.

Passion is good, but beware that looks can be deceptive. Where were you when Everton played WBA in the 1968 FA Cup Final? (I saw it live - albeit on a B&W telly.) And I'm sure johnh will be here soon putting us all to shame. :)

Just because someone has followed the team for just one year while others have followed the team for many years shouldn't in any way devalue the former's worth as a supporter. Indeed, in some ways, maybe he deserves extra credit for changing teams.

I don't doubt for a single second there are others here who started watching Everton before I was born, and stating that wouldn't put me to shame just the same as me not putting someone born in the 90s to shame. I don't take exception to anyone having a different opinion or disagreeing with me I do take offence to someone jumping in really aggressively accusing me of being an idiot or stupid (i think the first comment was a 5 year old) when they know fuck all about me and fuck all about what it 's like to support this club!

Anyway I don't want to turn this into a drama, I've said my piece and I would prefer to leave it at that.

  10. No, they tend to run them until the end of the season as a rule. Normally its the day before the window opens, making it the last day on June.

EG, McGeady signed a four and a half year deal in January, that will run until the summer. Most players get released at the end of the season, but they just keep paying them until the end of June.

There were rumours years back that Bill would withhold the transfer money until the last week of August to save on wages, wouldnt believe it so much though.

Then I stand corrected and Patto I apologise. But still I can't see for the sake of 350k Martinez would put up with not having a player in his side for the whole month of the start of the season missing vital games. If he did last season should learn him thAt lesson

No. The problem is that we have no patience and speculate on things we know nothing about (unless someone has actually seen a bank statement). Everyone does it, the press does, Twitter is full of it, so I can maybe understand it, but maybe instead we should just let the club get on with their business and stop urging them to make impetuous and costly mistakes.

And unless you have seen a bank statement yourself you have no idea what's there either do you and looking at the thing from the outside we 're as per usual being uber prudent which points to me that the account isn 't exactly healthy. Again just speculation but that's what it looks like to me. If paying an extra few million would have all our targets in and all on the pitch at the start of ghe season with a pre season to gel then that's money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

  12. Sorry mate your wrong. If he signs today we start paying him a weekly was today, if he signs in six weeks time we start paying him in six weeks time. Either way his contract will end on the last day of June. Not exactly 12 months from the date he signs.

If we sign him at the end of the window and he's on 75k a week we can save about 375k if we wait until transfer deadline day.

Maybe I am? But I would have thought if he signed a 5 year deal it would be 5 year deal whether it was now or the middle of December. 5 years (or however many) is 5 years. Unless all players contracts run out on a specific date?

  13. Distin has to play no matter what - PACE

He glides across the pitch doesn't he. 5 million we paid for him , what an absolute steal.

As I said, Jags is his captain and he has sway in the dressing room and that alone gives him a starting berth. Stones will get his chance, he's perfect for Martinez style of play of that I have no doubt.

  14. Jagielka is poor with the ball at his feet. He was also shocking before he got injured.

Stones place is deserved and Martinez should have balls to drop the captain.

He's his captain though so he's not going to is he. I think Jagielka has done enough over the past few seasons to warrant a starting place at the beginning of the season but if he's garbage and not doing it, captain or not he should be dropped.

I agree he wasn't in the best form of his life before he got injured and I think that has to do with he isn't comfortable with the ball at his feet but we do seem a lot more organised when he's in the team.

That being said, I absolutely hate the way we pass it about like we do at the back my heart is in my mouth constantly with it. I also think teams will be much more tuned to how we play this season and we wont get away with it as much as we have. You could see it towards the end of last season, teams were pressing us really high up the pitch, harrying us and not letting us settle on the ball.
