Sven: Owen injury doesn't look good

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson fears Michael Owen's World Cup has come to a heartbreaking end after he suffered an injury against Sweden.

Newcastle striker Owen suffered what looked like a serious knee injury in the first minute of the 2-2 draw with Sweden.

Owen will now go for a scan on Wednesday but, while England look forward to a second-round showdown with Ecuador and avoided in-form hosts Germany, the Swedish coach fears his dangerous striker has played his last game of the tournament.

"Maybe (his World Cup is over)," sighed Eriksson. "I am not sure.

"I hope he is okay but it doesn't look good."

Steven Gerrard insists the England team would rally behind Owen after topping Group B

"We are not sure yet," said Gerrard. "He will have a scan on the injury.

"But he is really down in there and we will need the boys to support him."

Eriksson also played down Wayne Rooney's reaction to being taken off during an ineffective second period.

The Manchester United star enjoyed an impressive first half but then threw his boots to the ground having been replaced by Gerrard after fading badly.

But the national coach claimed Rooney was more frustrated with himself and revealed he was withdrawn to save him from injury.

Eriksson said: "I think he was more upset with himself.

"He thought that he didn't play as well as he did in the first half in the second half but he is getting better and better.

"He played longer than last time and he will get better and better but I took him off because I couldn't risk him getting injured and play too much too early."

Gerrard was more pleased to top the group than avoid hosts Germany in the next round, adding: "We were prepared for whoever we came up against in the last 16 but the most important thing was to top the group."

Eriksson added: "It was very important that we won the group.

"We did it and didn't defend very well against set-pieces. We have to work on that for the next game but Sweden were very strong in the air.

"But we have to do that better in future. The most important thing was to win the group and I am happy about that.

"I saw the other game (Germany against Ecuador) and on paper it should be more difficulty against Germany but we have one more day to recover and we have won the group which is what we wanted to do.

"We have to play better than we did and defend better against set-pieces. That's important but normally we are good at that.

"Ecuador will play better than they did today (losing 3-0 to Germany)."

Gerrard claimed they were better than in the previous games against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago but admitted their defending from set-pieces needs working on.

Joe Cole fired England into the half-time lead with a wonder strike but Marcus Allback cancelled that out.

Gerrard looked to have ended their terrible run against the Scandinavians, who they have failed to beat since 1968, but Henrik Larsson pounced late on to deny them a long-awaited success and earn a draw.

Gerrard added: "We played a bit better but we were vulnerable from set-pieces so we will need to sort that out on the training ground.

"We stopped passing and moving. We were trying to work hard and keep the tempo going but from the bench it looked really difficult.

"The manager wanted me to come on and inject a bit of energy into the midfield."

O no :(:(:(:(:(:(

May further condem Sven's squad selections...!!!

.......................

Indeed, we are now down to the bare bones, i'd still like to see Aaron Lennon on the Wing, and put Beckham centre midfield to allow Gerrard and Lampard free movement.

...........................................Beckham......................................

Lennon...................Gerrard..................Lampard.................Cole.

tut tut - shouldn't wish that kind of injury on anyone...

He's finished - I reckon he could even be finished from the game in general...he has never recovered from the first injury and this one is worse.

my england team for the rest of the tournament is this....

................Robinson (coz James is even worse)...........

Neville(if fit).......Ferdinand(should be Carragher)....Terry.....A.Cole

Beckham...................Lampard............................J.Cole

.....................................Gerrard (free role)........................

...........................Rooney.......................................

thats the team that could win this world cup...

Michael Owen could be out for up to five months after the England striker reportedly suffered cruciate ligament damage against Sweden.

Owen injured his right knee during the first minute of England's 2-2 draw against Sweden in Cologne and flew back to the team hotel in Baden-Baden ahead of an MRI scan on Wednesday at the Max Grundig hospital at Buhlertal.

The fear is that it is serious ligament damage which would almost certainly mean Owen, who missed the second half of last season with a metatarsal injury, returning to England for treatment.

And reports on Wednesday morning have now indicated that Owen will be out of action for five months.

Owen's England team-mates Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville were also at the clinic for scans, Ferdinand on a groin injury he picked up in the Sweden game and Neville on the calf problem which has kept him out of the last two matches against Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden.

England midfielder Joe Cole spoke of the team's shock at Owen's injury following the game.

Cole said: "It's a big blow for us and the team. He's had a difficult 12 months with injury and now he's got a battle on his hands.

"Our thoughts are with him and his family. I hope he'll be back scoring goals for England soon."

Sven-Goran Eriksson, who gambled on taking just four strikers to Germany, was also pessimistic about Owen playing any further part in England's challenge.

He said: "It doesn't look very good for him and for us. How much time it will take we don't know.

"I think it's a bad one. We'll have to see what the doctors say."

England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Radio Five Live: "Everyone's gutted he won't play again in the World Cup and I just hope he's fit for the Premiership season."

Alan Shearer, who had a succession of knee injuries, fears his former England striker partner has kicked his last ball at the World Cup.

"I have to say I hope I'm wrong but it looks a bad one," said the former Newcastle striker, who retired at the end of the season.

"I've had a text from him saying he's in a lot of pain."

Graham Taylor, England manager from 1990 to 1993, believes his latest successor will be regretting his decision to pick only four forwards.

"I think we've all said from the word go, to only take four forwards could haunt Sven-Goran Eriksson," said Taylor.

"And with Owen looking seriously injured, I'm afraid it will."

This just shows why Sven shouldnt have took the gamble on Walcott, also he shouldnt have brought Owen in the first place because he was never going to perform as we know he can when fit. We now have Rooney who wont be at his magnificent best, Crouch who is poo and Walcott who looked poo scared in the friendlies. They are the three strikers who are supposed to win this for us, yeah right <_<

Robinson

Neville (if fit) Rio (if fit) Terry Cole

Lennon Beckham Lampard Cole

Gerrard

Rooney

Owens injury has shown Erickson for what he is, a bumbling twat who isn't fit for the England job, 5 million a year to pick 3 forwards coming back from injury and one lanky string of piss who cant score to save his life. How he can select Walcott and not play him in the group stages is beyond a joke. You cant blood a figing 17 year old in the knock out phase. So we are stuck with Bambi on Ice or an unfit Rooney.

The press bang on about our midfield as the best in the world but they can't keep posession of the ball. And still some journalists are still using the mantra "Dont worry it'll all come good." When? No more second or third chances, we fig up against Ecuador its the plane home.

We would be well f##ked up if we played that team as there are only 10 men.

I agree on the idea though but maybe with cole behind rooney and downing on the left(natural left footer) how many times could he have exploited that last night while joe cole kept coming inside.

Couldn't give a fat rat's arse TBH, didn't cover himself in glory in the first two games, should never have gone in the first place.

Play Lennon for God's sake, he scares defences with his pace, buy Walcott an ice cream and tell him to fig off.
