Funny! It's actually the other way around. The Ukrainian version is Kyiv; the Russian spelling is Kiev. At least, that's my understanding.

I've been there a couple of time on business, and I've always referred to it as Kyiv. That's the English equivalent of the Ukrainian spelling. Kiev is the anglicized version of the Russian spelling.
