The problem is that the agent is also telling him "Everton does not trust you, Martinez did not play you when Baines was injured, you are ready now, Swansea is offering you a chance, they have really scouted you...".
 
When the reality is that Baines is 30+, each time more injury prone, Oviedo has had a serious injury and Garbutt can earn the spot here if he sticks around the way Stones did. Martinez has shown that he's a bit conservative but once the player proves his worth he sticks with him.
 
Consistency is underrated in the careers of footballers. The more time they stay in a team, the more likely is that they focus on improving their skills and shine. How many times we have heard that a normal player has been in a team since long time and one year they had a breakout season? I think that kind of season does not happen overnight just because, it happens due to long term trust in the club, organic development and increased responsibility.

He's already proven on several occasions he can be, he just needs to do it more consistently. If the team start playing better, I expect him to thrive (as will Ross)

Agree with your post. I'd only add that it's the central spine - Stones, McCarthy, Barkley, Lukaku - that together are most important.
 
I'd also add that it's often bad for a team to have a single superstar. They can disrupt the balance of the team. Whey they are injured, the team takes a bigger hit than most.

If his agent has Garbutt's best long-term interest at heart he'd advise him to accept. However, Greedy gutter-rats and bottom-feeders as they are, they have only their best interest at heart.
How refreshing it would be if players could sue their agents for giving them bad advice!

That's my thinking. I wouldn't understand the "release" or "free transfer" of other players whose contracts are up at the same time as his, if we weren't re-signing him or at least attempting to. There's no way this invites a bidding war to ensure we get a few pounds off another club. Nobody is buying a player a few weeks before their contract is up, even if it were possible for us to sell him outside of the window.
 
I'm guessing that he's tested the market and not had any amazing offers rolling in. So, he's going to reluctantly re-sign, and he will probably take a loan elsewhere.

You're missing the point. Rom talks to the press, you castrate him and put words in his mouth. He didn't say win or I'm off, he said he wants to win and play at the highest level, you're creating ideas based on your assumption / intepretation rather than just reading what is in front of you.
 
Then, McCarthy talks to the press, not a single word about how he should shut up, concentrate on his game, etc.
 
Since I don't care when players talking to the press or not, its not an issue for me anyway. But you've had such strong views against a couple of players, it just weird to not here a peep from one of your favourite players.
 
Anyway, back to the story - I've no doubt its all horseshit and that his agent is just trying their usual dirty tactics to get a few more pennies, and I am glad James spoke out to reassure the fans. Its always nice to hear players ambitions.

Ive never been sold on Martinez, I was equally surprised how well he did last season by how shite he has done this season, and have said all along that we paid over the odds for Lukaku

You bring up the clubs debt but have ignored the climate in which we bought him. It was on the back of a record breaking TV deal and at the end of the day I would have taken a swap for Fellaini and Rom any day of the week

James McCarthy just signed two seasons ago, he's under contract for a few more (didn't bother to check that, does not matter).
 
We all want a pay rise in our jobs, especially if someone else gets hired with a better salary to do something similar. But then, that's his agent's job: to knock on Martinez's door and claim that McCarthy is very unhappy, threat with unrest, leak some quotes to the media and blah blah blah. It's Martinez's duty to tell him to STFU and go home in a polite enough way.
 
I tend to believe that players are not usually that concerned about the wages and more about the project, the results and the overall quality of the team. Do you really think that McCarthy would go against Martinez after all RM did for him? Sign him from Hamilton Academy to Wigan, sign him again to play for Everton, teach him a thing or two...

McCarthy is a vital part of our team and we would sorely miss him. It's the player playing alongside him that needs to change.

McCarthy is one of our most important players (if not the most important). According to my math...he appeared in 37 games for us this season (111 total points possible. 57 points recorded). He was absent for 14 games due to injury (42 total points possible. 12 points recorded). Obviously, there are many other factors that influence our results, but clearly we are a better team with McCarthy on the pitch (dropped 48.6% of possible points with him on the pitch vs. 71.4% points dropped of possible points with him off the pitch).

The buy back clause is such a PR thing. If Deulofeu is signed, it will be permanent.
 
Madrid started with the buy back clause some time ago to justify with "development" that you are cashing in your youngsters. Nowadays a great young striker in Morata sank them down with 2 goals in the CL semifinals, and they aren't even considering buying him back despite Benitez wanting him.
 
Barcelona is loaded with four top tier forwards, plus great youngsters coming through and high profile signings that they'd want to make in the next years because they have loads of cash. Only if Deulofeu becomes Messi mark II he'd be considered to return, and yet again they would still have Messi, Suarez (£80m) and Neymar (£75m) starting.
