Said weeks ago that Williams was just another average centre half, got some stick for it. There seems to be some more people realising it.
Williams was never going to be anything special but he was a solid and cheap buy, what we needed at the time. I can only think that we were expecting to get another CB in as well. IMO he is our most reliable CB but that isn't saying much at the moment.

Costa today was outstanding. He probably didn't have a great deal of touches. In fact just checked... he made 16 passes. 1 tackle won 6 duels and lost 6 but he was brilliant in everything he did. His energy created openings for hazard all over the place. The man city defence could not handle him and no it wasn't because octel his "sevice"... it was his endeavour.
How good was Costa last year in a shit team though? How far did he run then?
-
I see Phil Jones has come out in the press to say that our main danger man is Calvert-lewin... oh wait, my mistake, it was Rom.
-
-
Chelsea are a very good side now. They still give up chances but they are lightning on the counter.
-
This lad proves that it doesn't matter how much talent you have if you don't have enough between the ears to go with it.
-
So you're saying they're going to be more scared of lukaku who has zero movement up front, refuses to chase anything down and relies purely on the wide men, along with Bolasi, and either Mirallas, Lennon or Deulofeu who all three have done absolutely nothing this season so far and provided no threat?
Or would you rather have the West Ham reject starting up front? Or the under 23s black Suarez?
We've proved minimal threat since the Norwich game, players don't look arsed, we haven't pressed an inch despite that being said to be our newly adopted philosophy and played long aimless ball which rom struggled to look arsed to chase down.
Calvert-lewin will at least bring some energy into the side and have a young vibrant look about him.
Look at the young lad up front for WHU yesterday, chased everything down and was rewarded with a goal. We need someone to come into the team with a bit of work ethic that isn't just Bolasi doing it all alone.
What the fuck? U23 black Suarez? Have you ever watched Calvert-Lewin?
You ask any player in the Premier league and I imagine Rom would be in the 10 strikers they would least like to face across all teams, not just ours!
We shouldn't be relying on Rom chasing down long balls. That tells you the problem lies elsewhere!
-
In fairness to Baines he has just come back from injury. He looked back to his best at the start of the season. He has always been a player that needs games to get him back to 100%
-
We will take this back to the Rom thread instead of ruining yet another individual thread.
-
Think about when you sprint as a striker... generally when the ball is played in front of you or down the channel. You don't do it as much with your back to goal. Now going back to that Chelsea game how many times did Rom get the chance to get in behind or get onto the end of a cross? How many did Costa? That is why Costa has much more impressive stats.

Firminho plays for a team that plays a different style that means they run more than all the teams in the league. Hardly fair to judge one player in a different set up against them. Firminho swaps positions often with Coutinho and Mane. Lukaku has to drop back to even see Barkley's still in the pitch.
Compare him to a lone striker in a similar system and you'll have an argument.
I have already replied to this in the other thread but hopefully we can bring it back to just this one.
Pete is completely right, different teams, different style of play and different levels of successful teams.
Think of the Chelsea game for example, I would have expected Costa to have run at least twice as much as Lukaku. Costa had space and a team with lots of possession. We were playing useless long balls, and not getting a sniff.
I would never say that Lukaku is a workhorse because we don't want him to be one. Get him in the game and he will work his arse off.
-
Nope... Lukaku well behind on averages based on work rate. Aguero makes over 30% more sprints than him.... covers more ground and he's the second lowest.
You forgot context again Haf, now that's not like you
The only like for like player in that list is Costa and they aren't that different, and when you consider the comparitive fortunes of the two clubs, I think Rom compares well.
Likewise with Aguero, I didn't say very game he plays and I didn't say PL either. There are games where he has barely had a kick and has been completely on the fringes but City being under Pep there are games where he is getting chance after chance and becoming heavily involved. You put either of those players in our squad and you will see a different set of stats.
-
My point was That they were already at the club, Martinez inherited a very good squad
Haha I thought you were being serious until that last line and now I know you are on the wind up.
Even Osman (I think) said Stones wouldn't have got a look under Moyes. We certainly wouldn't have sold him for £50 mil!
-
I have only just read this. That last paragraph is exactly what we are seeing. The team isn't pressing properly, the defense is dropping deeper and they have more space to play in. Koeman can clearly see it but is having problems getting his team to do what he wants them too.
-
I can tell from the reaction in here that everyone is delighted about the official appointment of Southgate!
-
Next our fans will be moaning about the manager having red baubles on his Christmas tree...Wait, our fans have actually have reached that pathetic level and are having a go at him for it!
Red baubles!? How fucking dare he! #Koemanout

I watched him against Chelsea Bails - and again in the last game... there is subtle little "tells" that show he isn't "up for it".... he doesn't hide his annoyance of the lack of service very well at all and this isn't sitting well with other players and I understand its a two way transaction.
He does not evade his markers well at all - its all very frustrating. Its like his move is to try and run past them and hope that the ball finds its way in front of him... that's basic.
I used to watch suarez against us - its was like something out of a horror movie, nerves shot watching this electric eel dragging defenders all over the show and then darting into pockets. Possibly the most intelligent of footballers I have seen. Naismith was very good at it too.
Rom probably needs a mentor - maybe rooney is the answer....
Suarez was involved in play against us because we couldn't contain Liverpool.
I have watched Aguero a few times this season and everything you are saying could also be levelled at him in those games.
We aren't going to agree but if you get Rom in the game he will work his arse off for the team. If you leave him to feed on scraps then you won't. If you want a striker to fo that then buy Shane Long or some other donkey.
-
We have a chance to upset their defence so let's play a striker out wide and a young lad who has only been here 5 minutes upfront. They will be quaking in their boots.
-
It might just be a symptom of not winning more than anything.
-
I won't deny that I would like to see him do more but at the same time I don't see him do any more or less than anyone else, other than Gueye.
He makes plenty of runs, he shows for the ball regularly but isn't seeing enough of the ball. You could see it with Ibra last night, as soon as he has people running off him and around him he rolls back the years and plays really well.
Lukaku running an extra KM won't do jack at the moment until he gets that support and I would place a pretty hefty bet that if he did get that support he would be running that extra KM or two just by playing his natural game.
-
He's only young, he's had a broken leg. aah
Younger men than him have lost their limbs and died for their county.
What's he doing ? He's only playing football ffs, people here treating him like a baby with a sore arse, He's a man so let's have no silly excuses for him.
I don't understand what you are getting at here.
We are talking about a lad becoming a professional footballer and making that leap between promising world class performances and being a world class performer.
There are plenty of lads and lasses in the armed forces who aren't the best they can be for one reason or another, plenty older than Ross. Not everyone in the services makes the most of what they have, nor do they anywhere in life.
It's a stupid argument and completely out of context to anything even remotely relevant to this topic.
-
How does it apply to Martinez?
Because he brought in Barkley, Barry, Lukaku, Gerry, Stones etc to the first team, just as Koeman did at Soton.
-
-
United looking good tonight. Pacey, direct and aggressive. Everything Koeman wants us to be. The wide players are supporting Ibra as soon as they can with the full backs providing the width.
Rooney playing very well too.

And you are saying a similar thing about Keoman. If Rom had that goal ratio you would be saying it should be judged against the whole season.
And that in a nutshell is your problem. I'm not pissed off at all mate, and I'm not the one posting on every thread about Rom writing an essay every time preaching about how shite Rom is while the rest of us recognise his benefits and flaws.
As I have said before those stats should be taken in context, as should all and your are being a massive hypocrite considering your responses to other people who have posted stats on here dispelling your Rom myths.
Anyway, once again I am going to (try) and leave it there because it's pointless discussing something with someone who has such an entrenched view. Enjoy the game.
