David Beckham Retires

Recommended Posts

He missed two for England in big games so there is a myth that he couldn't take them. I'm sure out of 100 penalties Beckham would find the back of the net in 90% of the case.

I'd have thought the same. The guy strikes a ball so well, I'd be surprised if he missed many.

Just saw a reel of about ten goals of his on soccer am, he scored some beauties.

Come on Jona, no engine? Beckham has always been super fit, he always covers so much ground whenever he plays. This guy got into AC Milan and PSG teams in his late 30's.

I'll always remember him as one hell of a player.

If anyone thinks he's not, go take a look at his trophy cabinet.

Won the league in England, Spain, Italy and France. He won the champions league, got 115 caps, captained his country at major tournaments.

I hope for his sake he's remembered for his time on the pitch rather than in front of the camera.

Dalziel, can you find some stats on his penalty success? I can only think of him missing two, I don't remember him being awful like you say.

My sentiments too Steve.

As for his penalty stats, he didn't save a single one. Bloody useless if you ask me.

One such example would be in Euro 2004. Missed one in the France game (England lost 1-2) and then in the last eight with Portugal if memory serves. Brought it up, as distinctly remember the player missing a number of penalties at international level. If you're going to be talked of in regard to being a standout player or great servant, at least try to hit the target from six yards.

I'm guessing players in America have to take their penalties from a closer range to the English in order to have a chance of scoring. David Beckham is a brilliant footballer and is better than any to come out of the US.

Fair enough, got my measurements in a tangle. Been a long day and quite tired now.

What you said at the end there, isn't really saying much, in that Beckham is a better soccer player than any to emerge from the United States. Players such as Wynalda, Jones, Agoos and Bocanegra for example, were never going to be global superstars or a big hit outside of their own nation, but to give Beckham legendary status, when it's all about the name, is an exaggeration to say the least.

For the final time, remember his introduction in 1995, 1996, been through all the hype (you could hardly fucking escape it) and in retrospect, the fact of the matter is, was simply an overrated player, if not individual. You want to see great England soccer players, look up Lofthouse, Greaves, Moore or even Steven Bloomer, going back far enough. That chump was not it.

If you think back to the players greatest moments how many can you actually recall ?

#1 Half-way effort at Wimbledon, opening day 1996/97

#2 Greece free kick game, 2001

and now in truth, I'm struggling.

People have it right when they realize he was indeed, an overrated hyperbole player. And from what I recall, had an awful time of it with penalty kicks when given the task ? Genuinely irritates when some think Beckhams shit had a better odor than anyone else. For the last time, ok he was a decent player that had some outstanding moments and put in a performance every now and again, but some have been too carried away by his endeavors ever since he came onto the scene in 1996 or around that time.

It's all about the brand name and everything it entails, and soccer attributes come a poor second. Someone went as far to say they want him as Everton manager ? I had to do a fucking double-take.

what a ridiculous statement. He was a world class player for years, if not over a decade.

He's been a model pro and a very good player over the years, but to say he's world class is pushing it imo. World class is Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, Romario, Beckham has never got to that level. He made the most of what he had,and chose to specialise in those dead ball situations, for which he probably was the best at his time at that particular skill. A very good player, but not a world class player.
