David Beckham Retires

I didn't even read the link. Daily Mail can go fuck itself with it's never ending commercials and other banal and immaterial news items.

Only thing to say on this being, Beckham should have retired years ago, he's been ineffective as a player for the best part of the last 10 years, and not only that, one of the biggest most exaggerated and hyperbole players I ever saw. Ok, could take a decent set piece or had some attributes that were above your usual standard players, but he wasn't even quite near the same caliber of players like George Best and even Charlton. People lined up to kiss his ass and give superlatives and accolades, but simply was, nothing overly special and just a decent midfield player who gave a special performance every now and again. Certainly can't buy into the thinking he was some world-class player or historical great, and they can fuck off. Because he wasn't

Why do you think he took himself off to Los Angeles or Milan. Because he had a desire to play in the MLS or Serie A ? Bullshit. It was to promote the Beckham name or further publicity. I never thought he was anything special and the exaggerated claims he was some kind of great player, were just that - exaggerated. It's a kind of relief his ugly leather-faced wife didn't desire the same level of media attention that her husband did. Two snide individuals, and not really interested in what he does now. Probably try and get into management, and people may simply fall over themselves to appoint him, simply by the name alone. Another Everton candidate ? Will Kenwright make an approach ? After all, isn't Beckham the end all and be all of greatness ? I don't care what he gets up to from here on, so long as it's undertaken quietly and with minimum fuss, but with that name, you know you're going to be in for a disappointment. Feel I'm done on this issue.

best england captain in my lifetime imo...great player..seems a top bloke too

Yeah, matured hugely as a person in recent years I think.

Never had much time for him as a player before the Greece game in 2001 where he virtually single handedly dragged us into the World Cup finals, not just with his late goal but his whole performance (in a pretty abject team effort) was immense.

Actually, looking at the video highlights, it wasn't quite single handed! Nigel Martyn kept us in it twice.

And then you're only 26 years old Mr Paulo

being best England captain covers a lot of ground, and believe me, it wasn't that name.

Nowhere near the qualities of Wright, Moore or even Robson in that capacity. It was merely the name, above any attributes or outstanding qualities a player may possess. Last time, completely over-rated and exaggerated figure. should have quit years ago when it was even then, at a time, all over.

Robson was ridiculously overrated imo....Beckham was hugely better. Moore was probably the best ever but Wright was before my time.

The best player I've ever seen in an England shirt. I still remember that free-kick against Greece when he sent us to the World Cup - he gets nothing but respect from me.

I just don't get the hype? One great goal against Greece, another against Wimbledon and then what? Hate to admit it but he ain't half the player as Gerrard, Lampard, Gazza, I know he was a footballing icon etc..... but come on! No pace, no trickery, no engine, if he looked like Luke Chadwick do you think he would be as popular?

What an absolute crock of shite yet again.

Perhaps Beckham became one of the worlds top players because he had nice hair ? dont%20know.gif Perhaps he was captain of England because he had the flashiest car ?

The lad was the best passer of the ball, and dead ball specialist I've had the pleasure of watching. Yes, we all got fed up of the Beckham brand, but to suggest he was anything less than an ultimate professional, and fantastic leader on the pitch, is absolute bollocks.

That's got nothing to do with it Matt, Giggs is welsh and would piss all over Becks as a footballer but I don't pretend he's god gift!!!laugh.png

just taking the piss mate ;)

he could put a ball on a strikers head from virtually anywhere..he didn't need to beat a man..there's a video somewhere of all his free kick goals..they're fantastic so it's more than just the 1 or 2 good goals

Yep sure could, so could Trevor Steven, Chris Waddle, John Barnes, Glen Hoddle.............. Interview with Chris Waddle today saying Becks might not get in the top 100 players in the premier league, I know it's only Chris Waddle but I would take his point of with a pinch of salt, but as i said, Giggs pisses all over him in a footballing sense.

He actually said top thousand. Prick.

Chris Waddle needed a hair cut. That's all I remember about him.

If you think back to the players greatest moments how many can you actually recall ?

#1 Half-way effort at Wimbledon, opening day 1996/97

#2 Greece free kick game, 2001

and now in truth, I'm struggling.

People have it right when they realize he was indeed, an overrated hyperbole player. And from what I recall, had an awful time of it with penalty kicks when given the task ? Genuinely irritates when some think Beckhams shit had a better odor than anyone else. For the last time, ok he was a decent player that had some outstanding moments and put in a performance every now and again, but some have been too carried away by his endeavors ever since he came onto the scene in 1996 or around that time.

It's all about the brand name and everything it entails, and soccer attributes come a poor second. Someone went as far to say they want him as Everton manager ? I had to do a fucking double-take.

Come on Jona, no engine? Beckham has always been super fit, he always covers so much ground whenever he plays. This guy got into AC Milan and PSG teams in his late 30's.

I'll always remember him as one hell of a player.

If anyone thinks he's not, go take a look at his trophy cabinet.

Won the league in England, Spain, Italy and France. He won the champions league, got 115 caps, captained his country at major tournaments.

I hope for his sake he's remembered for his time on the pitch rather than in front of the camera.

Dalziel, can you find some stats on his penalty success? I can only think of him missing two, I don't remember him being awful like you say.

Posted

He missed two for England in big games so there is a myth that he couldn't take them. I'm sure out of 100 penalties Beckham would find the back of the net in 90% of the case.
