Broke my three front teeth at 10 years old, had crowns fitted at 15, just had one of those crowns broken and my dentist thinks the remaining tooth under that crown is at risk !

Have any members had an implant done, how has it been and any advice would be helpfull.

I know they cost on average £1000......... :crying: .

Not had any myself but a couple of observations.

First, my mum thought of having some done a while back so I researched it for her and you can get them cheaper if you go abroad. Eastern Europe seems to be the destination of choice (my dentist's Romanian anyway so I'd feel right at home) but would take a lot of research and thought though. Example here..

NHS view on it is broadly positive but sensibly urges caution...

Second, I've recently met lots of people who've had them done after having teeth removed pre-radiotherapy (they do that because dentistry post RT anywhere near the jaw is very difficult because of damage to the bone). I got off lucky and only had to lose four back teeth but some have to have all removed. So a lot of people eventually (long waiting list) get implants and luckily don't have to pay for them.

All that I've talked to have been very happy with them, particularly in comparison to the full/partial dentures they have as a temporary measure.

So on that basis, if I were in your position I'd definitely go for it, whether here or abroad (assuming I could afford it).

Thanks for that Mike, will know more when my dentist removes whats left of the broken crown.

If I could turn the clock back to being 10 years old (when I originally broke my front teeth)........I'd put fucking brakes on that home made go-Kart !.......Mind you, the brick wall I hit did the same job as brakes.

Thinking back I don't remember anyone having brakes on their Karts, it was a case of put your friggin feet down.....or try and hit something soft.

When I played football a rough arsed centre forward elbowed me in the mouth. Knocked one of my front teeth slightly crooked. At the end of last year on having a check-up the dentist said that it was loose. The top had split away from the root. He took the top off and dug out the root. Since then I have had a plate for the replacement tooth. He said an implant will cost £2,300 and the procedure will take about 3 months. Don't fancy all the hassle but the plate is driving me up the wall, can't get used to it.

Did you get the NHS version (resin based) or the private metal based one? The cheap (or free if you qualify) NHS ones are far more unpleasant than the metal, though they cost £400/600.

Wife needed some and got the plastic to start with but they made her gag and she couldn't eat with them so we went private and they're much better. I got the cheap option to replace mine but they're pointless in all honesty; no "cosmetic" value because they're at the back of my mouth and after eighteen months without teeth there my brain copes fine eating with what I have left, so I'm not going to bother with them.

Why don't you consult a professional dentist? I underwent a dental implant surgery few months ago fro a dental clinic ( http://www.pearldentalburlington.com/ )in Burlington. It was successfully attempted. I recommend yo to consult the best dentist who can heal your dental issue.

My dentist is a professional, you wouldn't catch me going to an amateur, not where pain is involved. No matter how good the dentist is, he can't make the decision for you, you have to make it yourself.

Cheaper going to an amateur though John; I use ImaplumberbutIllpullyourteethoutforless.com. Great service and bled my rads for free.

Dixie (250 to his friends) will be on his bike to Coral Springs, Florida as we speak!

No need to get the bike out, when the broken crown was removed my dentist found what was left of the original tooth would support another crown, he put me a temp in for a holiday in the USA, on returning, he found the temp pretty well stuck, as he yanked I thought I'd lose that vital bit of tooth!

Finally, temp out new crown fitted, £375.

Thanks to all for the advice on implants, might come in usefull at a later date.

Dentist tells me one of the other crowns has a tiny crack, could go any time (have lasted 40 years).....£375 would get me and my son to Goodison on the train with Hotel etc.

Wife thinks tooth.........son says Goodison.

Just got back from my initial implant procedure. Was in the dentist's for an hour and a half. Fortunately, the bleeding wasn't too bad as I had been off warfarin for two days. Still got a frozen face but as he put a few stitches in I guess it will be a bit sore when it wears off. Eating is going to be difficult and the dentist says my top lip will swell up by the week-end. All this and I had to pay for it too!

Your 'inital implant procedure', is that where they cut and insert some metal work into the gum for the bone to grow to and the skin to grow over. How many teeth are you having done!

Yes, that was more or less what they did. They pack it with powdered cow bone (I checked that the cow hadn't got anthrax!). Only having one tooth done, one of the front ones (upper). Knocked slightly askew by a centre=forwards elbow in about 1960 but finally gave up last year. Have very little discomfort but eating is difficult. My top lip is very swollen, didn't recognise myself in the shaving mirror this morning. The face I found staring back at me wasn't nearly as handsome as me.

Been to dentist today, my teeth are falling apart due to my medical condition. Implants though will cost me a grand each so I will have to do without. :(

Can't you get anything done on the NHS.

Certainly you can get free stuff done post cancer if you lose your teeth due to it so I don't see why you shouldn't due to other medical stuff, I've met loads of people who've had it done. Every likelihood my remaining teeth will drop out over the next decade or so but I'll be referred to a re-constructive dentist to get it sorted. Long waiting list though, there's only one specialist guy who covers the whole of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, lovely guy who I've met on a couple of occasions but ridiculously overworked obviously. If you get to see him within two years of referral you're doing well. NHS is definitely in safe hands .

Had my third visit today. Should have been last week but we had to cancel as my Warfarin count was too high. It wasn't much better today but we decided to go ahead. Fortunately, there wasn't much bleeding. Got a numb face and some stitches. Still two visits to go. As its one of my two front teeth, I am putting up with it but not sure I would do it for any other teeth, too much hassle (not to mention cost).
