Alan Smith £1.75mil

Recommended Posts

You're all making good points and i'm starting to think it might not be that bad if we do sign him ........

But i still can't stand the fucker and think he's shit!!!!!

I'd rather have the Alan Smith who used to play for Arsenal than this gob shite, i'm going to be pissed if he comes here. Moutinho, Manny, Cana ( just for his tackles ) and Topal. Up front i'm at loss, need a international though

Oh oh, another Evertonian hitting the panic button and settling for 2nd best, if he's not going to improve the team why should we sign him, save the fee and the wages we have to give him, and get a better player.

I'd hardly say its hitting the panic button. Everyone who wants him wants him as back-up, ou would struggle to find many players for the price quoted with the same amount of experience and still with time on his side.

We all know we need numbers, smith will make up numbers, he may not have bags of skill but he has versatility.

If smith was the only attacking/ midfield signing we make i'll be pissed. But if he is signed to bolster the squad then for 1.75m i really dont have a problem with it. Not every player we sign will be a world beater, Smith is cheap and cheerful, sometimes thats what you need.

ofcourse he's shit, that's why united adore him and he's a legend amongst leeds fans, myself included. i will never, under any circumstance accept that he is shit... he is one of my favourite players ever and an absolute legend in my eyes. it would make my fucking year to see him in an everton shirt and would be a great buy under moyes. a transfer i've wanted for years.

come on!!!

I seem to recall Everton signing Ibrahima Bakayoko on the basis of a compilation video of his best bits and he hardly turned out to be a legend did he?!!!

To be fair to Smith, he was good at Leeds at scored goals at United when played up front- which wasn't very often- but I just don't think he will add the right dynamic to Everton at this time.

To push the club on and move forward we need a top class midfielder and a top class forward, this is 2 players, not one player who is a make shift midfielder and reasonable forward.

He'll cost a lot in wages, even if taking a massive drop too.

Saying this, if we sign him for £2m ish I'd be delighted to be proven wrong and see him do well. I just can't see it unfortunately.

The peeps that want to sign him are basing his ability on how he was 3 or 4 years ago, but we didnt buy him then, we are talking about buying him now, thats the difference. Yes he was very good at leeds and to a lesser extent average at United, he has had a serious leg injury and is not the same player, in fact he picks up injuries very easily these days, if he cant make it in a shit Newcastle side he aint gonna be any good to us. Vd Meyde was bought on the form he showed at Ajax, a lot of water goes under the bridge in 3 or 4 years and players change, they lose it and once its gone they never get it back. Please dont get the impression that Smith will come here and show the form he had at Leeds, wake up to the reality that he will be no good for us, and i would rather DM put his faith in one of our youngster at 5.000 pounds a week and raring to go, that a over the hill injury prone player on 40,000 pounds a week.

God i hope there's no truth in this rumour.

I'm hearing things like "Good Striker at Leeds" and "Great squad signing"???????

Guys his goal scoring record at leeds was 38 goals in 172 games ( 1 in 4.5 games???) and remember they were an attacking side then and its even worse for his career : 68 goals in 354 games ( 1 in 5.2 games ) !!!!!!

The price is not 1.75mill it will be £3mill and he will be picking up £40k - £50k per week on at least a 4 year deal ie £10.4mill in wages so if you all think he is worth close to £14mill then you are mad!!!!

Save the 3mill and add it to the AJ money and spend on someone quality, would sooner have 1 or 2 good players than a hundred Alan Smiths!!!!

P.S My old man is a NUFC fan and he and his mates are praying we take him off there hands, they hate him up there!!!

It don't matter what any of us thinks, if Everton sign him you not going to sing and cheer if he scores? That's a big if! I don't like rubber lips never have, but players work differently at different clubs anyone thats played the game knows that, sometimes you just click. Moyes must have seen something he likes, if it don't work out fine, he won't be the first or last crap player we have signed.

Strikers are judged on goals, he scored 1 goal in a pre season game = avoid like plague.

Broke his leg quite badly, will never be his "best" ever again - back of his mind when going in for challenges he won't want to break it again.

Even at £1m and £40k a week I would rather play Vaughan, Jutkiewicz, Baxter and probably even Agard.

the only player there that would even challenge smith in any team would be Vaughan....all this Smith shit is bollox, Smith isnt a 10 million pound class player but I bet if we do sign him he will become another bargain.

Zoltan Gera went to Fulham on a free transfer and would'nt cost a lot in wages he can score a few goals, is a hard worker in midfield, and isnt likely to miss half the season with injuries, he would have been a better choice to boost the squad numbers, but because he moved early we missed out.

Everton always leave it too late and by the time we come to sign anybody we are left to choose from the leftovers that nobody else wants, another couple of players who would have boosted the squad, luke young for 5 million and nicky shorey for 4 million have gone to Villa today. Them and spurs are well ahead of us this season. I can see us dropping out of the top half this season. Europe will not be seen again.

The opportunity to maintain our place or to move up another gear have been disgracefully spurned once again. SAD.

Maybe there's a hint of panic in that statement as well Licker ;)

I've got to say i am starting to panic a little. Almost of our targets seem to be staying with thier clubs or moving somewhere else. I still think we can go for the players that are mentioned all of this website (Moutinho, Cana, Topal) and have these back up plans (Smith). If i have a choice then no i wouldn't want Smith here but when nothing else is available i would take him.

Like i said i'd leave it until 10 to window closing though as i think he's shit.

And just for the record i'd have taken Gera too, now he would have been a great squad player on fairly low wages.

Not panic Gwladys, just realism.

As ive said Villa and Spurs have spent a lot in bringing better players than they already have, and are still spending.

Harry rednapp has got a team together that is going to push on from last year, i think those three teams will finish above us this season, so right away we are fighting for 8th 9th 10th position.

The latest talk is about Justin Hoyte going to Boro for £3m, Do we need some squad cover for right back ?? are we looking to buy him. ?? not a hope in hells chance of us advancing this season.

Licker,

Agree with you 100%.

Also been reading peoples tips in the paper for whos going to finish in the top 6 and not 1 person has picked us.

If we off to a bad start this season could end up being a struggle to finish mid table.

If we do finish mid table and not in Europe next season what chance we got then of getting players in to better the swuad

Well hopefully we won't have to resort to signing Smith or if we do it's because Moyes is being greedy with the numbers or he's signing him as cover for M'Bia when he goes off to the africas cup of nations and Moutinho has had a slight knock and Fernandes is being rested ............. i can't brush off this wave of pesimism at that point.

News reports today are a little more positive so i'm keep my fingers crossed that something comes off this weekend.

I have stayed out of the Alan Smith debate as can't make my mind up.

Part of me thinks that it would be a waste of money and part of me thinks about what he might be able to do for us.

Only thing I would say is that when DM took Arteta he had already sort of failed at which ever club he had been at an no one really wanted to sign him.

I beleive that if anyone can turn it around for Smith DM could but that doesn't mean I want him here.

When you have looked at the players that we have been linked with (some true some not) you would have to say that this is a step down and maybe a bit of panic buying.

The thing that annoys me with DM which is both a good thing and a bad thing is I don't think that DM will sign just for the sake of it even though its obvious that we need players.

I think I can gone past the point of panicing now and seeing things a little different.

I DONT think that we will be signing any of the big players that we have been linked with. BK coming out and saying they are still after Joao does not fill me with confidence I am affriad.

Would you really rather have Young and Shorey for £9 million than Smith for £2 million?

For a start, we certainly don't need Shorey with Lescott and Baines around.

And £5 million for Young? He's no better than Neville at right back, so I don't see him strenghtening the team (I don't rate him at all tbh), and worst case scenario I'd say Neville RB and Smith DM is preferable to Young RB and Neville DM (Phil didn't exactly set the world alight playing there last season), especially as it'd also save us £3 million of our clearly tiny transfer budget!

What if Neville gets injured we have no right back and no defensive Mid, even if he doesnt get hurt he cant play in two positions in the same game. Your missing my the point The club is hoping to spend 15 million pounds that we cant afford on ONE player, and we will still be 3 or 4 players short, We could have had GERA, YOUNG, SHOREY, and HOYTE for less than that.

If Baines is so good why is Davy playing a great centre half out of position.

Because we have 3 great centre halves, arguably the best 3 performers at the club last season. 3 into 2 doesn't go and personally I think Lescott looks the least convincing of the 3 at CB. I see what you're saying, but if Neville gets injured Hibbert can do a job (certainly defensively) or Yobo and move Lescott inside. Rodwell could come in to the DM role and possibly even RB in the not too distant future as well. Moyes must be after a DM, he said all along that DM was his priority once Carsley left. £15m seems a lot for us to spend on one player, but if he gives us that missing ingredient in the centre of the park, that dominating Gerrard type midfielder that we haven't had in who knows how long, then £15m is worth it as it's the most important position on the pitch. We have an incredibly strong spine to the squad now, right down the centre we have Howard, Yobo, Jags/Lescott, Cahill, Yakubu, add in Moutinho and possibly M'Bia and we are in the big time.

Moyes knows the situation, he won't spend our whole budget on one player, if he spends £15m on Moutinho then he must have more than that to spend. hopefully! :)

I hear all your arguments about IF we sign M,bia and IF we sign Moutinho and if Neville gets injured Hibbert can do a job, but we havent signed anybody yet and hibbert is injured, and is likely to be out for some time,

My concern is about saturdays game cos we havent got eleven players to put out on the field. By my reckoning we will have 9 players from the reserves and youth team involved, 2 in the team and seven on the bench, he will have to play 4-5-1 seeing as Yakubu is the only striker we have, annichebe is at the olympics and Vaughan is either Injured or suspended, cahill is unfit and will be missing which will leave us in serious trouble, neville will have to move into Midfield and yobo out of position at fullback.

Jeez, can it get any worse, we are the embarrassment specialist of the premier League, Conference teams are better prepared and more organised than we are. God help us.

the bench will definitely be a bit of a shambles, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that we'll have a fair few youngsters in there, hopefully Rodwell, Gosling, Turner and the other guy whose name I forget are ready to make an impression - but yes we could do with some faces, which is where the likes of Smith comes in. IF we do get Moutinho etc then we would have such a good first eleven, hopefully we'll be able to finish off some games quite early and give some of the youngsters a run out.
