  1.

An additional point: Most of the monuments are relatively recent phenomenon--a lot of them weren't installed until the 1960s during the Civil Rights movement. These things weren't intended as historical markers, they were outright symbols of white domination and power installed to intimidate people of color. Case in point: there are a bunch of monuments in Arizona, which wasn't even a state during the Civil War.

    beat me to it

  2. I don't get the reason for removing historical stuff, no matter who wrong it is seen in todays light - it should be left as an example of how backward people were and how far they've come.

The idea this is "defending history" is a fucking joke though

The flag, tyrannical statues, et all symbolize oppression. Perhaps these objects or examples of them can be, I don't know, present in the confines of museums or accurate text books? The Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham is a place that I've been to that at least tries to get things right with its content and programming. There you will find KKK hoods/uniforms, a bombed-out bus, the shattered remains of the stained glass window from the church in that city. They do a wonderful job.

Visit a museum, or pick up some enriching literature on these subjects; if you need somewhere to start I have a running list.

The 'erasing history' stance is a tired one. The Germans were able to do it in less time with monuments that bring to light the horrors of the Holocaust. They know the details, without seeing Hitler on statues and without swastikas all over the place (despite any graffiti that pops up, I assume.) It is literally the same thing, there is no difference. The rebel flag is to slavery as the swastika is to the holocaust, they can't be disassociated. It should offend everyone and POC shouldn't be left to cry foul to an audience that continually ignores them. It's everyone's burden, it hurts us all. There is a 9/11 Memorial; it's been open for years but this country isn't nearly as comfortable dealing with the evils of slavery. So much so that places like this happen to be vanguards in the preservation and historical sector:

I've been; it's harrowing and more people should make the trip if they're ever down in the New Orleans area. It's about an hour NW I believe.

These monuments, or 'history' as some people call it were mostly erected in the very late 19th century so the treasonous act of doing so would fly under the radar, or even more recently as an affront to the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. They're not timeless Grecian statues that have been a part of city skylines forever, they're methods of intimidation and hateful pride made physical. They're like building a statue of Joseph Goebbels just after the Nazi defeat and fighting tooth and nail for them to stay up to this day, except the Confederacy lost which makes even less sense; unless your main goal is to keep the ideas and morals of your populace brooding for years to come, even in the face of defeat.

It worked, here we are and now because the statues are things that inspire some people and confuse others into a state of dismissal they did their job as a form of time released hate. Some are charged up, some don't 'see the big deal', and some of us are just as scared as ever. You wouldn't ask people people to just 'deal with' and 'learn from' a statue of a Nazi chief officer. Surely there are other ways to grow?

  3. Just watched the highlights, the goal was excellent and we actually played some nice football in the second half. Everyone one who participated in the goal, from Keane to Rooney was great today and we'll really start to impress as the rapport develops between players.

I'm glad Koeman acknowledged the mistake he made with the formation.

  4.

Jags distribution was horrific, think someone suggested in the match thread he must've been drunk, shocking. Defended reasonably well though.

He was shocking and you could see his confidence was lacking; saw him hanging his head a lot. At least he's aware. He doesn't have the ball playing ability of some of the other players and I think he knows it.

  5.

i don't do Twitter or Instagram. Would like to get rid of Facebook as well and will in the near future. Nothing more than people not so humble bragging about themselves or their life. Bought a new car today, look at me. Got this nice vacation, look at me. I'm big time, check this out. Useless. I use it to keep up with some friends i have outside the states and it's useful for that, that's about it.

Instagram is a great tool for small businesses or if you're involved in visual arts. But yeah I agree, like all social media it is often abused.

  6. The players that ended the match played with more fluidity. Add in Sandro and we'd look great. Schneiderlin looks off the pace and there was no ball retention in the first half. Davies looked a bit lost too. Unfortunately Rooney and his sporadic form can't be accommodated if there's no rhythm in the team. I was encouraged by the last half hour-20 mins; Lookman and Gueye played well when they came on. We have a lot of new players so I'm not going to panic yet.

  7. My only worry is how he adapts to English life, we only have very few players who speak Spanish (Joel, Mirallas and the Koeman's?) so him learning English quickly is a major must. Providing he settles into the life well then I high hopes for him.

He did say in his initial interview that learning English was something he always wanted to do. He seems enthusiastic about everything right now. Really positive.

  8. Is the existence of a new contract still in question? I thought that was definite. I feel like most of Koeman's comments about Ross were in response to very simple questions. People have said a lot about his treatment but I just interoperate the commentary as basic criticism.

Koeman had been asked about Barkley and Lukaku from the very beginning of his tenure. It's gotta be annoying. He just answers questions as they come to him and not only does he see what we do on match day, but he's there for training. Ross probably holds on to the ball for longer than he should in training too. That's just how he is.

I've never been able to witness the negativity thrown at him during matches but I have read level headed assessment of his ability on here and other platforms. I just think Ross is afraid of the work and the challenge of competition for his place. It's hard to suspect anything else when a player declares they'd like to leave without an actual deal in place to do so. The contract is there, with more money and greater responsibility; he just doesn't want to continue at Everton.

  9. I can't see giroud coming because I think Sanchez will be sold from arsenal and they won't sell both. Our forwards will be Rooney, Sandro the pacey forward and a target man who can hold the ball up. Personally I want more pace and wouldn't buy a big man. The one thing defenders don't like is pace and if I'm honest I think the way the shite attack is the way forward. Lots of pace and interchangeable players. So for that reason I would be in for dembele at Celtic who has a bit of both or martial at united. I think when he players as a number nine he scores goals. He can also play anywhere amongst the front three. Gilfi is the obvious choice as our playmaker but if that proves too much money I'd like to see us go for lanzani who is a really skilful player who can do that little trick to open up a back four.if not him then forsberg at red bull looks like he has the lot in his locker.

After last night a centre back is a priority. The kid at PSG is meant to be a cracker and could be got and I was impressed by the two centre backs at Ajax. Gibson at boro could be got I think and that potentially could be England's centre back pairing

He's my choice at striker. I think he's super talented and wouldn't cost much.

  10.

not for me, way too much time on the ball has a couple times tried to dribble himself through 4 men instead of pass. the lad needs to learn it's about team. rooney meanwhile is laying off left and right and look at the shots. DCL runs into 4 men.

    take him off.

He had one of our only shots on target directly after taking on a few defenders.

  11. Sharpe is proper embarrassing the way he can't remember or recite players names during the match. Calling Sandro 'Pedro' for way too long in the first half. I just heard a 'Martinez' for Cuco...

  12. Great result. We still look like a controlled outfit, which is what I like about Koeman's managerial presence. I see us scoring goals from all over too. That performance would have been different with a static Lukaku. Even the work that DCL did in the first half incorporated more of the team.
