FanchesterCity Posted November 5, 2011 Report Share Posted November 5, 2011 (edited) Merseyside has two fantastic clubs, within spitting distance of each other, and great open parkland between - but the council (and possibly the people) fail to harness that. The park remains 'so so' and not particular appealing in the grand scheme, and the two stadiums are very much just for football really. No great 'play' is made of either let along both combined. Basically they are wasted opportunities. It would take a huge transformation in the council's, clubs' and people's mindset, but the whole area should be an attraction for families, visitors and anybody looking for entertainment, sporting or otherwise. Sort of like a Central Park feel. Coffee shops, concerts, events etc. The club's stadiums need to be more open - utilised every day of the week more or less (on a much larger scale than currently). Fountains in the park, picnic areas, everton and liverpool histories - just a very 'European / cosmopolitan' feel. If the vandals and other morons can be sorted out, it's the ONLY way forward to really turn things around. If you get shipped out to some industrial wasteland, you'll end up like Bolton with a retail park next door, or City with nothing nearby of any note. IF both clubs want to keep much of their heritage - then this is the only real way forwards. Yes it will cost money, and yes, the council shouldn't be subsidising either of the clubs, BUT it's a win/win/win situation for all to combine for the greater good of Liverpool. The rivalry is to be kept and celebrated, but it's a selling point too. Maybe market it as 'The most watched footballing square mile in the world' (or similar). But instead, Stanley Park will remain a nice bit of land that's really going to waste in grand scheme of things, and two clubs trying to compete in a much more commercial world than ever. One with Americans trying to make a quick buck, and one bloody skint. 3 mediocre propositions in truths - when it could be ONE superb proposition that celebrates all 3 aspects. Can you imagine the job created? the pride created in Liverpool folks building that place? making it together - red and blue - where nobody in London could do it, nobody in Manchester could do it.
