Tim Howard

No way in the world that goal was his fault. If he could have stopped the shot, he would have reacted to it (because he has excellent reactions) but no keeper would have got to that.

Reacted? The shot was from 20 yards out so it's hardly 'reaction' stuff, the shot was an easy shot to save had he been positioned properly. As it happened he didn't because once again he fucked up.

But he was in the correct position. If the shot had not been deflected he probably would have saved it. If he were to position himself in order to save a possible deflection he would:

A - be amazing

B - be burnt as a witch

If he had been anywhere else and the shot wasnt deflected he would probably have let the shot past him and that would have been his fault.

Ive looked at the goal about 20 times today and my conclusion is that he could do nothing about it. His weight was on his left side and he had no way of getting the power shifted to his right foot in order to get back and save it.

But you may be trained differently and im not a goalie so you might be right.

Yes reacted... When you perceive the flight of the ball going one way, position yourself appropriately and start transfering your weight etc and then it goes in a different direction than you had predicted its very hard for an keeper to react.

You will actually find that keepers dont react to the ball that much, they just predict where the ball will end up judged on the angles of the shot, side of the foot etc etc, especially at close range. Thats why the hardest shot for a keeper to save is the one where the striker scuffs the crap out of it.

Howard was in the correct position in the case of a through ball - if he's stuck on his line the striker nips in and gets on the end of a through ball. If that shot doesn't take a deflection then Howard saves it, only a wonder-strike or a deflection beats Howard from that distance.

don't totally agree with that..seen him beaten by some easy shots from distance before..just think on this occasion he wasn't at fault

imagine if the through ball had been played and he was positioned on the line in case of a 1/100 deflection..the striker is in and they score..everyone blasts him for not stoppin the pass..feel bad for keepers sometimes

Why'd we let him go?

Good question. Late developer maybe....Paul Lambert had apparently looked at him a couple of times before he bought him but been unimpressed. Then he had a decent season on loan at Motherwell (his eighth loan club) and Norwich needed a keeper so they took a punt. Don't think anyone could have seen how far he was going to progress.

But a real shame we lost him.....he'd be an ideal partner for Tim I think.
