i feel sorry for the players having to play at that time of a morning...

Quality post from planet dark  .

All sounds like a bit of an anti-climax....shame for the fans there but can't read anything into losing a game like that. Glad to hear 'Tolis (as DM called him) looked decent :) .

Sounds like a few things came from that game though:

1. Confirmed: Rodwell will wear the number 4 shirt next season.

2. Confirmed: Mucha aside (although it sounds like he did well), we started with what I deem as the first team going into next season

3. Confirmed: Gueye is somewhat of a 'dead ball specialist'

4. Confirmed: Vellios could be, one of the bargains of the century. Everyone praising his 45 minute cameo.

5. Confirmed: Jonny still knows how to get sent off

6. Confirmed: Playing in that heat is rediculous

Also point out, Union are already half-way through their season, of course they're going to have the fitness and match practice. We're one game into pre-season, so i'll take this result the way it should be, as prep :)

Sounds as though Vellios did well, Nev is on the official site saying how pleased he is at Vellios's performance last night, Gueye aswell, think we may have a hidden gem there, he does look a decent player, and to think he was a recomendation from Houllier!! as for Jonny H, well i just got rid of him on FM 2011, he was always getting sent off or scoring own goals lol, nothing changes with him, i do think we could sacrifice him for some £££, we have Duffy and Mustafi in reserve.

From what I have heard it sounded a bit like last season, decdent possession but no real threat, then a defensive mistake or general sloppyness costs us a goal.

W/regards to the heat, is it always that temperature at this time of year as it would seem a bit stupid for us to hold a pre-season game in preperation for the new season in those conditions. Surely playing somewhere a bit cooler or later in the day would have been a better option?

Just to also put this result into a bit of persepctive, Man Utd beat Seattle who are 2nd in their division 7-1! I dont know if Seattle put out their full strength team or what the weather was like but on the basis of it, we seem to have some ground to catch.

I dont mean to put a downer on it as it sounds like our 'upandcomers' are starting to show some promise but its not what I was expecting to see, especially after a good display at Bury.

Tenacious, I agree with all of that. Most of the play was unattractive, not just our side of it.

i'm not bothered by the result, especially after thinking about the match hours later; at first I was bitter because it was a originally a pleasant surprise to see them in a pub last night.

I also made this comparison last night after seeing the Man U highlights, we could and should be doing something similar. That being said, I don't think the conditions were the same, on top of our formation not being as complimentary as it was at Bury. I'm a fan of Cahill as an individual, but I think we looked more threatening with Becks playing off of someone more inclined to attack like Yak. At least Moyes used Vellios for a good amount of time, but I would have started with him and Becks. With all this praise he's getting I wouldn't be surprised if that happens at D.C. I have a feeling we'll see a different team on Saturday.

Yeh I agree with this bit. Cahill is brilliant for the club and his work rate is fantastic, but having him play behind the striker seems to slow down our business play, as he always looks to play back to goal, allowing the defence time to get back and get set. Very rarely does he run in behind anymore and we dont cause centre backs enough problems. Yakubu may do a similar thing but he will try and roll his man which may not sound like much but it just means we are breaking forward instead of sitting back and waiting.

If we are going to pay 4-5-1 with Cahill then for me he has to play as a midfielder, breaking quickly along with the other advanced midfielders to support the striker. He actually showed towards the end of games last season (early part) that he could do it and it was probably the best I had seen him for a while.

I'll just give a short player rating from what I watched (some of first half and all of second)

Mucha: Made a few solid catches and good stops but I feel he was afraid of coming out of his goal when he should have. 6.5 :)

Coleman: didn't (or couldn't) do much in right back position but when he got switched to right mid he got more involved but he still needs to improve the final ball. 5

Heitinga: was confident in center back and center mid and looked for a pass rather than just kicking it up. Seemed to boss the game well. 7

Jagielka: Looked tired and nervous, not the jags we know. 4

Baines: tried getting forward today and did okay but looking really tired. Made a really bad mess of a clearance at one point. 5

Gueye: didn't do much at all and looked tired.(from the portion of the first half I saw) 4

Neville: was good positionally throughout the game but didn't get involved. I think he prefers playing right back as opposed to center mid. Also got to see why he doesn't normally take corners :). 6

Arteta: Got back and picked the ball up from the defense had some good passes from what i saw. 8 (didn't watch a lot of the first half but I heard he was great :) )

Bily: looked frustrated and sloppy. The worst part for me was seeing a few glimpses of what he could do but he couldn't repeat it. 4

Cahill: worked hard but didn't do well in my opinion, didn't add anything to the team. 4

Beckford: Really did not suit him being the only striker. He should just not play or play with someone else. 4

Distin: He had some good moments and some bad moments, nothing special. Made a mess of a long ball which would have normally been easy for him. 5

Rodwell: He looked more confident and I think we got to see a few glimpses of what he can do. Still was sloppy and bad clearance before the goal. Still with some confidence I think he has some hope :D 5

Vellios: Love the guy :). Looked so confident and did well, but like everyone else go tired and couldn't repeat . 7

Barkley: Great footwork and vision but looked a bit nervous, still you can see he is going to be great :D 6

McAleny: Didn't get to do much but made one good pass which impressed me. 5

Thought the blues struggled with the heat and some of the players were not up to it.

First rating, so I hope it helped those that didn't get to watch the game.

i couldnt watch the game last night because of work but i did see some very short highlights of academy lads playing and was impressed by a lad who scored 2 goals,i dont know what his name was but he reminded me of wayne rooney, does anyone know who it was.

His name is Chris Long (I believe) , I read somewhere else that he is someone to watch out for.

Went to the game last night and had a great time...even tho Everton looked pretty shit honestly. lots of passing it back and forth along the back line but never advanced the ball very far up the pitch

the Union looked the better team the whole game, and found ways to advance the ball into the final third much easier

I think we missed the creativity and running that we would get from Osman (still getting used to him being one of our best players, who was at the practice i saw Tuesday morning but not at the open practice the same afternoon. moyes said it was a groin strain when i asked him.

Vellios looked very class and composed around the ball, and i can distinctly remember him tracking back into midfield and winning the ball at one point

Overall the team looked tired, probably attributed to two-a-days in this heat we have been having

Still great to see them for the first time tho...and excited to see them play again Saturday we are driving down to DC for the game.

Also,

Asked Rodwell after the open practice and he confirmed he is changing his number to 4

Asked Coleman if he is moving to the back and he says he doesn't know its up to the gafffer

Asked Barkley how his leg was feeling and he said alot better
