  1. I think the reason that no one in europe is forming an orderly queue for him is the same reason why many fans didn't want Martinez - he was at lowly, skint and unfashionable Wigan. Ahhh but if he was getting great passing, intercepting and work rate stats in a glory team like Spurs he would be having Levy slapping a £25m price on him. The reality is McCarthy ran the midfield against Spurs when they beat them 1-0 at WHL.

Again the same applies for McCarthy as it did for Kone and Martinez - the fact that they succeeded at a low resourced club should be the reason that they are rated.

I'm not saying he is the next Steven Gerrard, but I would say he is more suited to RM style than Fellaini and would be the perfect support for Barkley (who some on here never believed would prove his 'hype'), who we will build the team around. For what we can afford, knowing what we will get I believe him to be the best option.

£10m plus add ons to £12/£13m would be a reasonable deal.

I think people need to move away from the "midfielder, how many assists and goals?" stat. We had Time Cahill who was a goal machine in midfield but lets be honest as a midfielder tackling, passing, intercepting etc he was pretty average and we needed two central players supprting him.

McCarthy is a similar type of player to Carrick who many credit with being uniteds key player aside from RVP last season.

Id say Barkley has more potential than McCarthy in the long run, and the more i think about it off the back of J's comments yesterday, McCarthy is more of a replacement for Gibson than Fellaini. My only issue with the McCarthy thing is the price, it's crazy money, we are talking the same money as the Manc's were trying to offer for Fellaini and more than what they did for Baines. I really hope Roberto can swing something with DW on this as anymore than £10m and i really don't see where the value is tbh, i think we could get better elsewhere. Lets just wait and see at the moment. Id really rather see us sign a Tiote type, christ for £15m we could probably get Cabeye(worth a try)

  2. I think people on here might be bumming McCarthy up a bit too much, talking about him as tho he is a mix of Roy Keane and Bryan Robson, he is nowhere near all the adulation he gets on here.

I hope peeps are not disappointed if we do get him.

Well said Bill, Europes big boy's are hardly all forming an orderly que for him are they, there has to be a reason, i feel the asking price is too much just for starts.

  3.

osman was in the wrong position in that game imo...him and barkley will be fighting for the same spot this season imo..we defo need another centre mid who can do the gibson role and the fellaini role..mccarthy and someone else maybe...not so up on what is about right now

Like J said in the McCarthy thread, he is more of a similar type to Gibson than Fellaini, like you said we would still need a bruiser in the middle. I reckon Barkley will get the nod over Osman in that position imo. as Tonka said you would expect Osman to excel under Martinez but so far it's not happened for him.

  4. And Martinez made it pretty clear that he wont sell anyone or buy anyone now that the season has started.

Really? Well if he honestly believes that then he need's to give himself a shake imo as we are in desperate need of midfield additions, even if Fellaini ends up staying. Osman is showing he is not up to the job and Gibson managed to get himself injured before the season even started and will no doubt get injured again at some point during the season, leaving Barkley and possibly Fellaini. No way is that adequate imo.

  5. always admired McCarthy, massively underrated.

Would add a great deal to our squad, however he's closer to Gibson in style (which isn't a bad thing at all), so I still think we need a commanding, steely midfielder to replace Fellaini.

Yes but Gibson is proving a bit of a short term solution due to his constant injury issues, so it's probably a useful position to strengthen. J you know your players, do you not agree that the £15m is a little on the high side?

  6. With these types of transfers there's always an opening bid, it's just that this is a very low one. I think if they stick another £10m on to the offer then the club might start talking to them, that would be £23m for Fellaini and £15m for Baines, i could see movement then.

The important thing is that IF it's going to happen, let's get it done and dusted this week so Roberto has time to strengthen the squad with what he needs.

  7. To be fair Moyes probably just identified who he wants - I'd imagine Woodward or whoever deals with the actual negotiations monetary wise.

    But still... FUCK OFF!!!

He still has the final say on the player and if he honestly thought it was a cheap price and he'd know we would reject it, he would go and say "look, there both good players, Bill is never going to accept £28m for them" It's his former club. he knows exactly what they are worth. It's amazing that in the space of weeks, Moyes is managing to destroy 11 years of a fairly good relationship with his former club

  8. Vibrac's back...maybe we are but we're being cautious with our money?

Cardiff might get relegated, they've spent a fortune, what if they've borrowed against 3 years of tv income? They'd have to sell everything again. I just think we're being a little more carefull.

It's frustrating as hell but at the same time, I empathise. I wish we would spend our future income...but that could kill us.

Borrowing against future income is a very dangerous game to play, no doubt about that, but it's very frustrating as i think we are honestly only 2-3 players away from a very good side. Im no financial expert though and get lost with all the figures and terms that go with it on a regular basis. Done some reading recently on Vibrac and they sound a shady mob, and loan/mortgage company for football clubs basically.

  9. Again reports suggest we need to sell to be able to buy McCarthy. Does this mean ALL the new found wealth of the TV money has gone to the banks and "infrastructure" the few signings we did make could easily have been paid for by savings in wages and money for prize money. Kenwright's "few quid" to Martinez has really ended up being just that hasn't it.
