Europa League Watch

Recommended Posts

Just in case anyone was wondering who Everton should support in the Europa fixtures this afternoon, I put together a little information on the games and what it means for our upcoming group draw.

Check it out at: http://planetgoodison.com/2014/08/europa-league-watch/

Basically we need some favorites to get beaten by underdogs to have the chance at Pot 2; a scenario which would give us a much easier group.

(Sorry if this looks like shameless self promotion for my blog, it kind of is, but this is more about the Europa League than anything else).

True to a point (other than,"...winning the Europa League means first winning your group.") but you can't have taken into account the coefficient of the ten teams that'll join as Champions League playoff losers, because we don't yet know who the are.

Also, looking at the fixtures you've listed, hoping those underdogs win is clutching at straws a bit; it'd be a big surprise if any of them progressed. Grasshoppers maybe a chance but beyond that very unlikely.

Pot three for us I think. We'll cope.

On a slightly different note I couldn't find the Tottenham game at all on TV tonight.

I presume it's just the qualifiers nobody is showing.

Usually ITV2 or someone shows them?

Who's arsed, if we're good enough to win it we'll beat anyone. No point looking for an easy ride!

So in the FA Cup you would sooner us draw Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham rather than Hartlepool, Accrington Stanley, Bury , Swindon and Notts County then?

After all who's arsed if we're good enough we'll win it.

Well personally I'd prefer an easier draw because the harder the draw the more chance we'll get knocked out. You see, when it comes to us playing Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City etc we're not good enough to beat them on a regular basis so by the law of averages we'll get knocked out somewhere along the line getting tough draws.

Those teams are playing in the champions league mate. We won't draw any of them. So it's a pointless comparison and on our day we can beat them all!

I said FA Cup (as you well know) as I couldn't be arsed finding the top teams in Europa and can't predict who's getting launched out the champions league so used the FA Cup as a comparison. It doesn't matter which cup it is the principal is the same so trying to be a smart arse isn't really working you know champ.

If you want us to draw the best teams in the cup then that's obviously your opinion and right but to not be arsed about us getting a favourable draw is just plain stupid.

But still, each to their own.

It's likely we'll draw at least one half decent team in the groups. After the group stage we'll most likely draw a better team everytime. I ain't trying to be smart. I'm just saying if we want to win the cup we have to beat whoever we face and for that reason I ain't too bothered. We're not going to draw 3 top sides in the on group.

But we could also get lucky and get a favourable draw. The easier the draw the better for us.

Friday mid day.

Incidentally Celtic, Standard Liege and Lille dropping into the Europa last night knocked us three places down the pecking order.

To be honest I've not looked at how it works. I assumed as we were the leading qualifiers from our country so would be seeded.

Is that not right?
