London Blue
We need a Calrvalho type player to dominate midfield.
markjazzbassist
We need a Calrvalho type player to dominate midfield. Agreed, today showed how weak and awful we are in centre mid. We might need 2 signings there. Doesn't look like McCarthy or Barry are gonna get a chance unless they are injured.
markjazzbassist
yes it was only Barnsley but we had Jags stones Barry and McCarthy missing. I thought Holgate and Galloway played good especially Galloway. Jags and stones were injured, are Barry and McCarthy off? That's the only reason I can see they didn't make the team. Nothing on the OS about them being injured.

JoeQuince
https://www.grandoldteam.com/2016/07/24/barnsley-0-3-everton-tactical-deconstruction/ Pretty solid analysis of yesterday. Where we are and where we need to go. That sort of thing.

Shukes
People who have experienced pre seasons before will already know that we usually have two different squads other than two or three players that the manager needs to look at more. It's not unusual to see our more senior members not in a squad as the manager wants to fit others in.
FairWooney
great right up that. Interesting reading about the changes to our game. I like the high press and always felt it was something Martinez would have been more keen on given his love of Barcelona's football. The other key thing was the look to move things faster quicker, the no.10 looking to turn and find a forward pass quickly and using a long ball from the full backs down the channels to try to play Gerry in. I do recall this sometimes happening under Martinez with Lukaku looking very dangerous when played in like that and being able to look to muscle past his man into plenty of open space but all too often our release from the keeper resulted in far too many side to side passes before pushing forward. The defensive comments I'm not too worried about at this point, in the first half we had 2 young inexperienced defenders and we had a mix at full back. Obviously stopping crosses is something that needs to be addressed though and hopefully Koeman will be on the case.
Btay
Good report that. Although I'll reserve complete judgement on our defence until we have the likes of stones/jags/Mori playing majority of minutes with Coleman and Baines in fullback.
