Gwlad reacted to Elston Gunnn in Martinez - Direction?
Martinez appears to be a warm, sweet, humane fellow, who found in Everton a special club, and in Kenwright an owner who totally bought into his project, vision, and emerging football brilliance. As did I. I thought Martinez was a brilliant new mind, and that he and Everton made a highly promising pairing. His first season seemed to point in the direction of success -- European football and challenging for top 4 in the league.

Until the second half of this season, my main concern was whether injuries and inconsistent play would derail his project, because several emerging young stars would be tempted to go to a big club, and because Martinez would be unable to persuade them to have faith in his vision. Until the second half of this season, his public analyses of the team's performances were puzzling, irritating, but not a deal-breaker.

But in the last several months, I have reluctantly come to the view that Roberto's sweet personality has diverted (my) attention from the probability that, as a football mind, he is an utter fanatic, literally obsessed with his theories of how to play attractive football. Usually, or so I had thought, obsessed fanatics have a bit of the glint in the eye, a hardness, a sort of off-center look or personality. Roberto's smile is trustworthy, not off-center.

His words, though, gradually struck me as something more than an odd take on the reality of the team's play and results. His explanations became not quaint but bizarre. Then inaccurate. Then delusional. Then lies.

He now strikes me as an odd combination of a calm, warm, genuinely good human being, but a mad-scientist of a manager, obsessed with perfectionist theories detached from footballing reality. It appears he has yet to concede that his theories are not applicable to every assembled squad, including one that he continues to assemble. He will hope to persuade the owners to stick with his vision.

Whether they will think his vision genius or madness, I'm not sure, though he's clearly lost the fans, and many of the players. His promising project almost worked, maybe, but it's past the point of no return. I suspect the owners will by now have been unsettled by Martinez's repeated public self-humiliations.

I do wonder whether they will be thinking of the best way to save Roberto from himself. Undoubtedly Roberto doesn't think he needs saving. He's wrong.

We could discuss McCarthy's options and/or Martinez's game management after the second yellow. But in this case, my point referred to the burgeoning sense that Martinez has been self-destructing for quite some time now with his rubbish comments in post-match interviews, not to mention pre-match press conferences, random interviews, pretty much any time he opens his mouth.

As you and I (and 99% of fans who saw the match?) agree, the second yellow was completely justified, far from harsh. So Roberto looks the self-deluded fool yet again. It's become a bizarre, uncomfortable story: a man widely admired for his sweet smile, winning personality, and admirable demeanor has become -- has made himself -- a laughingstock. He seems to have gone over some edge, determined to lift himself out of a hole by ... digging.

Over the past two years, when watching and listening to him, I've gone from curiosity, to bemusement, to anger, to discomfort.

Silly boy Roberto - pick your battles you buffoon. You can have a spat with Eto, Mirallas, Distin - but you have alienated the one player we have who combines tenure, with honesty, quality and has the respect of the fans.

It reminds me of Gullit taking on Shearer - only one winner. You would probably get away with it if we were not so awful - BTW please tell me why Baines apologised and Rom hasn't???

    You joking?
Don't agree with a lot of the Lukaku criticism but saying he is better than Everton is ridiculous.

No player has even been or ever will be better than thier club.

We have been around for longer than his grandparents and will be here long after his grandkids have gone. We have won more trophy than he will ever win. We have a history that is rich and great.
We have more fans than Lukaku.

    We are Everton.

Well that is a half that confirms why Martinez needs to fuck off. When you saw how we played against Chelsea, why should fans put up with this shit? You can't pick and choose when to get up for a game, it has to be the minimum expected, week in, week out. It's like we think we can win games in second gear. Just. Fuck. Off.

    So typically Everton!

I thought we played well enough in the first half and were very unlucky to be behind at half time . Second half we completely ran out of ideas and once again no plan B

Today highlighted exactly why we are a mid table side

over martinez. every one knows the way to beat tiki taka is park the bus. teams have done it from day 1 he got appointed. there has never been and still is not a plan b. it's lose the game, that's plan b. i can't count how many shit games like this we've lost simply because we pass away as the lanes are clogged and have no penetration.

martinez tactics ruined us. his subs were awful, absolute garbage. should have had mccarthy off at halftime with gerry on. it was clear they weren't going to attack no need for 2 DCM. Lennon should have stayed on and mirallas for Clev at 70'.

this is why martinez will never be great, too stubborn to abandon his philosophy and win gritty matches.

Don't want to deviate from the serious subject but this was a great track by Lou Rawls in 1976," You'll never find...." including the line "no ifs and buts and maybes"

It's great to see him talking so positively about next season:

"...as a team, we are going to get better as well. Next year, next year is going to be fun. This year is exciting, next year even more.

“I can’t say Leicester are going to be champions or we are going to make it to the European spots. But they can and we can. It’s that close. But next year? I can’t wait. I am excited.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/everton/12152121/Everton-striker-Romelu-Lukaku-At-the-moment-I-know-I-am-good-really-good.html

He gives it his all when he plays, he genuinely feel affection from the fans and he won't be on mega wages and versatile too. No brainer really. Great bench/impact option.

A defender who could play as a winger.
