  1. Gray and Townsend at least showing energy and creating a few chances. Our loan bright spots were our two signings for 1.5 million pounds. Not good.

Holgate and Keane neither one deserve to wear the kit. Not a good way to start the season with Godfrey out. Also not good if we want to hold onto James. Just not good generally.

These transfers scream "Moneyball" to me, and I say good.

Gray is a talented, relatively young player who can develop and do a job for us.

Townsend has pace which is what we need and is a backup.

With these transfers we are showing "Smarts" which we have lacked in some of our deals in the past.

Gray is less than two months younger than Iwobi. Might as well say the same thing about him.

If Townsend and Gray are cheap back-up replacements instead of Iwobi and Bernard and we still go and sign a top quality winger then these could be smart signings. Bernard and Iwobi will be on over £200k a week between them - I’d be very surprised if Townsend and Gray would total even half that. Plus the potential fees for Bernard and Iwobi could be used elsewhere. Now let’s be honest Townsend and Gray will provide far more opportunities for 2 strikers in Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison than Bernard and Iwobi - may not be glamorous but makes sense if we can shift other players.

Will they, though? I would understand if we were confident we could get rid of Bernard and Iwobi, but these four all seem about on the same level and if we're just adding wages, it seems like we could do better. Iwobi and Gray are the same age, and Townsend is older than Bernard.

  4. Can we just go back to the part where he said we were getting “bigger and bigger”? For a club whose most famous chant talks about knowing your history, and whose supporters pride ourselves on having been one of the biggest clubs in England for almost 150 years, that comment just feels all wrong. We’re not getting bigger-we’ve been big.

Can anyone just summarise it? Because I won't be watching or reading any of his interviews

For one, he backtracked on what he said he meant by “small club.” Instead of saying it was that we had dwindling squad numbers as he claimed before (which we all knew was horseshit anyway), he turned it into “it’s all about context. I’m Everton manager now and I will fight for the club. I’m happy to see the club getting bigger and bigger.”

Color me unconvinced of anything he says.
