I posted a comparison on my site some time ago that had some interesting facts about him in comparison with what we have.

It's here if you want to read it (if you don't want to, don't.)

I think he will prove to be a decent player if he stays fit.

If he stays this summer we better get him signed to a new deal. If he won't sign a new deal then he has to be sold.

Donovan not leaving is purely Donovan's choice. Obviously MLS wanted him to stay, but they're not going to force him to if he doesn't want to. Dempsey and Howard left at times they were the elite players in the league. Altidore was the best rated young striker the league had arguably ever had and he was sold. Clint Mathis and Damarcus Beasley as well. Brek Shea and Geoff Cameron were also stars and were sold. Though Los Angeles obviously would want a decent transfer fee (as any team in the world would for their players) they would not prevent him from moving on. The only thing keeping Landon Donovan in the US is Landon Donovan.

He has more value to a team than just scoring goals as well, unlike Jelavic. It's a definite upgrade for me, my only qualms with this are that I think it's a short term solution.

If he gets us 10+ goals a season for the next 3 years, he'll have been a good signing I guess, so lets just see how he does. He offers something different to Jelavic and Anichebe as well in terms of playing style and he'll fit into Martinez' philosophy better than those two.

Have a look at that first highlight (someone should be making a highlight video with all of his goals for Levante and Wigan btw). I can't see Jelavic or Anichebe doing that. Taking his man on and playing the winger in on goal. He also immediately races to the penalty box and should really have gotten the ball back from McManaman. Saha would probably have just stood there watching after giving that pass, maybe jogging forward a bit.

    agreed -

makes it much more competative on our frontline, I think he is going to be a good signing for us, a grafter and a bit of quality as well.
If just siging him kicks Jelavic on it a bonus, I don't care much who scores as long as somebody is.

I think we have just significantly increased our chances of more goals over the next two or three years without breaking the bank and putting our eggs in once basket.

chicagoblue got a reaction from Cake in Marouane Fellaini
Going to register in the stay category.

He has a price, as all do. Nothing we've heard this summer, however, quite registers. I don't think he's at his full value. A year under Martinez would only take him to 26, and it might just bring out a world class player.

I have a suspicion that Martinez might just be the man to deploy Fellaini properly. Base an entire defensive system around him. He can play several positions at once while gifting steel and composure to our central areas.

In front of a 3 man defense, breaking up attacks, calming possession, then moving the ball from D, through the midfield, and further forward when space opens up.

Played as a distributing and marauding wrecking ball, I think Felli might just be unrivaled. Show him as that, and then proper bids will come in.

I'm always dubious about big money Dutch strikers, for every van nistlerooy there is an alves, for every Suarez there is a kezman.

I'd take £20m + Ramsey, tidy player who I think would flourish at us much like Gibson has and many didn't want him.

Sin miedo - Spanish for "without fear" is Martinez footballing principle, written on the walls of the canteen at wigans training ground. Certainly the likes of mcmanaman showed that against a class fullback in the fa cup final.
Not too sure what the Spanish for "penknife to a gunfight", "sit back at 1-0" "fuckin launch it nev" is.

The no fear approach won Wigan the same number of points against man united, arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in Martinez's tenure. With a clearly more limited team.

Moyes has gone, time to move on. Under Martinez I feel players will be given far more creative licence.

How the hell is this a fair comparison? Altidore was 20 years old at the time. Kone was 29 when he scored 11 for Wigan. Altidore just scored 31 total goals this past season, including the game winner against PSV for the Dutch Cup. He has scored four goals in his last four games at the international level. But fuck me, let's judge him on a loan spell from three years ago when he was barely even developed.

They are getting better quality players? havent saw those bids yet. they are bidding on unproven talent yes, and paying double for it. That sounds like a beter business deal? Sorry but just because these teams are spending more money des not mean they are better signings.

And you will have to excuse me for being old fashioned and all but im a FOOTBALL fan, not an Alan Sugar fan, I dont give a shit about how much sell on potential a player has. i would rather see us buy a player that can fire us into Europe next season. Which incidently makes cash too.

Look a new manager comes into a team and do one of two things:

1 = Shake the whole team up, sell players and buy players and cock everything up.
2 = Work with what he has and add what he thinks will improve on the current set-up without rocking the boat too much.

    I am going with 2.

it great this time of the season - every year we seem to be linked with all sorts of player only to find we sign players out of the blue, that was never a rumour at all. I wonder if will be the same under Martinez as it was under Moyes. We'll never learn!!

We all spend pointless man hours mulling over every link we hear. 95% of which are without any substance. I wonder how most of them really start?

June has to be the worst month of the year - anything to fill the void of no Everton games.

We know a couple of enquiries have been made - I hope it is Honda and Moses

I really don't see the logic of signing Kone. One of Robbie's jobs is to lower the age group of the squad and spending £6 mill on a 29 year old is daft when you can sign Bony for £10 mill.

As I have said, having argubley the best left back in the world at the club, I don't think any fan would like to see Baines go. However every player does have a price, as this means for the quality you may lose in one position you could improve in other positions.

Baines will be 29 this December, so this would be the only real chance we have to cash in on him. We have had three or four very good pretty much injury free seasons out of him.

I think the club would have to really consider any bids between £15M & £20M for a 28 year old left back. That is a massive cash boost for a club like us.

Head over heart, I would say any bids of £18M or more have to be thought off. The recent Baines interview must have added a couple of million to his price as he is in no way pushing for a move away. So any bid has to be enough to convince Martinez to cash in.

Baines, Fellini and Hetinga sale, along with the transfer kitty, could equate to around a £50M transfer kitty for the new manager. That could lead to quite a squad overhaul.

Anyway, what I am saying is the sale of Baines and /or Fellini this summer would not be the end of the world as a £40-50M transfer fund isn't a half bad sweetner.

Thing is if we don't sell him we have to make damn sure he signs a new contract.....otherwise we'll be getting offered a lot less this time next year.

I will certainly be keeping my hands in my pocket on this occasion. I really dislike these standard designs that the big manufacturers use. We are an individual club and if the designers at Nike cant be bothered to come up with something original then they should be told to f*** off.

I don't know anything about him to be honest - only that he does the occasional piece of skill and it ends up on YouTube. I'm not too sure that Martinez's targets for Wigan should be the same as his targets for Everton.

I think I would rather see £8M on Dutch Leroy Fer than £12M on a Kenyan who has had a good year for Celtic in a very very uncompetative SPL with the spare £4M spent on a decent young centre back. Two for the price of one. Although the Dutch league isn't all that great, its still streets ahead of the SPL (with no Rangers).

Both are described as the defensive 'box to box' midfeilders, so not going to see both.
