  1. Personal view - why Labour lost. 1. The Electorate don't like the thought of a 'geek' being Prime Minister. See also Kinnock and Michael Foot. (The fault lies with the Trade Unions who pushed for Ed over his brother.) 2. There were too many people in the Labour camp whose fingerprints were all over the financial crisis. (The fact that most were 'in denial' didn't help.) 3. Nicola Sturgeon's insistence that she would do a deal with Labour (in spite of Milliband's denial.) Don't say I'm right but that's how I see it.
  2. Just been to vote. The Monster Raving Loony Party are one vote nearer world domination.
  3. Yeah, I remember, the school leaving age in Cornwall was 10 - though you couldn't go up chimneys younger than 8.
  4. Uni eh. I was working in my first job at 15.
  5. You won't dare admit to voting Labour as people might think you were influenced by Russell Brand!
  6. About ten years ago when my sister was in her early sixties, she had a mastectomy. Two weeks after, they called her back and did another one. She was a bit miffed as she said they could have done both at the same time. Ten days after she came out of hospital she bought some 'lining' material and dug a pond in her back garden. She is now 72 and still going strong, 'strong' being the operative word. She lives alone in a farm on the Yorkshire moors above Hebden Bridge which is challenging on a daily basis! Some years ago she got an infection in her little finger which wouldn't respond to treatment so she arranged to have it amputated. She swears blind that when she was returning home after the op the postman shouted 'give me four'!
  7. Pleased to see Millwall going down the leagues. Worst supporters in the land.
  8. I am 79 and like a drink but have never, ever been drunk. On my first business trip to the States we were taken out to lunch by our American hosts. All the Brits had beer or wine, the Yanks had milk or water. They said drinking at lunch time was instant dismissal. I worked in the City for several years and we went out for a pub lunch most days but no one ever got drunk. However, our offices overlooked a square with restaurants and outside tables which were regularly full at 4.00pm - with people who got there at 12.00.
  9. Villa 7 Everton 13. My, this single malt is good - sorry, what was the question again.......
  10. As Mike says, this 'hanging in the air' was disproved many years ago. The 'illusion' is probably best illustrated by basketball players scoring a slam dunk where they appear to hang in the air. The movement of bending then straightening the legs adds to the illusion. The 'jumping early' tactic obviously doesn't mean that the player can 'stay up there' longer. This tactic is designed to disrupt the timing of the defenders jump. The problem is that jumping early means you get up there too soon and can't get a solid/accurate header, which is why this tactic is usually only used close to goal where a glanced header can create problems for a defence. Or a target man glancing a header for a player to run on to.
  11. My grandson Charlie (aged 15) who lives in Nottingham, gave up supporting Notts County (not difficult) and started supporting Everton (because his Grandad supports Everton). My son took grandson to Swansea and also to the Man U game on Sunday. They also go to the games at the midlands clubs, not so far to travel. Makes me proud that the tradition is being passed down, particularly as I can't get to games.
  12. The only problem is we did Liverpool a favour. Great win though, brilliant tactics.
  13. Can't remember if I posted this before. Way back in the 1970's I had a root filling at the dentist. At one stage, I had metal clamps and other unmentionables sticking out of my mouth like a Christmas tree. The dentist decided he wanted to do an X-ray and to get to the X-ray machine we had to walk through the waiting room, with me looking like I had a mouthful of spoons. I estimate that half the people in the waiting room got up and left!
  14. Telegraph Sport today says that Mirallas and Lennon 'set to swap clubs'.
  15. I am confused by the term 'slow and safe'. Why is slow assumed to be safe? Both England and Everton have given goals away by sloppy passing across the back four. Slow = complacency, lack of concentration= passes going astray or intercepted.
  16. I think we have to look on the positive side. Kone might be excellent in training, something the fans never see. He might be a big help putting the cones out and giving the bibs out.
  17. No, I think what Martinez meant (not put very well) was that he now knows not to let Barkley take penalties.
  18. Liverpool Echo comment on Villa game. 'Balotelli had a goal wrongly chalked off for offside but as he spent most of his time on the pitch in an offside position it didn't really matter.'
  19. Shame about Liverpool losing to Villa.
  20. According to one Sunday paper West Ham are looking at Martinez to replace Allardyce next season.
  21. When I was patrolling the jungle in Malaya (1950's) we had never heard of 'Operational Synergy', just made sure we saw 'them' before they saw us.
  22. 1948/49 I was twelve. In the boys' pen at Goodison, over 78,000 in the ground (ground record) against Liverpool. Liverpool leading 1 - 0. Everton get a penalty, Jock Dodds steps up to take it. 39,000 hoping he scores, 39,000 hoping he misses. He scores! I know it was only a penalty but the pressure must have been unbelievable. The pressure watching was unbelievable. The match ended 1 - 1 and I went home happy.
  23. Rubes, all exiled Scousers thank you for posting that!
  24. Had a small lesion on my cheek next to my nose. Couldn't get rid of it so Doc sent me for a biopsy. Went to Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot yesterday (Don't drive they said so another £50 in taxi fares). I thought I would be in and out in five minutes. They froze my face which wasn't unexpected but then the procedure took exactly half-an-hour. They then put five stitches in the wound. Took me by surprise and my face looks like I have just gone five rounds with someone with a useful punch. The most annoying thing is I can't blow my nose!
  25. I make it 13 clubs in the Conference who have played in the Football League. That includes Southport who used to play in the old third division north. I also remember when New Brighton played in the third division north!
