Is Lucien Favre still on the short list? I'm only just beginning to become familiar with all these managers, but he seems like a great choice.

I know way less than everyone else here, so I'm not ashamed to ask, specifically, why the hatred of Martinez? (I'm not saying there shouldn't be extreme disappointment, but I'm wondering what the source of the anger is.)

Yes, our record is crap, and i understand how that reflects on a manager. But it also rests on the players, no?

Is it that Martinez doesn't know how to get the best out of the side? Or that he insists on an inadequate strategy? Or that he starts (and subs) the wrong players? Do the players like him?

We hear quotes from the players about how "there's no chemistry" in our side. Is this Martinez? (Not arguing that it's not; just wondering what it will take.)

I watch these matches and it's unbelievable how hot and cold our players run from one weekend to the next. I mean, against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarterfinal, Lukaku was insane. (Or maybe it was just "the goal" I remember.) But then against Palace, he doesn't even show up.

It appears that they know how to play the game, but where is the heart and soul? My God, how fortunate must one be to play soccer for a living? And an immensely lucrative living, at that. (Some look like they really DO give a damn, like Lennon, and Coleman, and Besic.)

Hard to argue that a new manager can't change things, at least statistically. Look at Chelsea. Under JM, they had 15 points from 16 games, and were as low as 16th place. Under GH, they've earned nearly double: 29 points from 16 games, and clawed their way back to 8th (before sliding two spots). If it were me, I would have had NO problem sacking Mourinho, him being ineffective AND an ass.

But as for RM, I'm not a fan, based on his results. But I wish he could have had success, because he seems like such a decent guy.

I'm tempted to add BeIN sports channel to my Sat lineup, but it would add at least $35 to my monthly TV bill just for these cup ties!

I have never sworn so loud as last weekend.

I don't want to swear this weekend. At least not about a bad result.

3-2 Toffees and we will hold them off at the end.

This is going to be great.

Mark: thanks for adding the match dates!

I watched it in the states on NBC's Sportivo channel or some such. Didn't need to speak spanish to know that it was dreary as hell. Waste of a saturday morning.

Yeah, they fielded a "better" side, but still.

Everton passed while standing still, and usually backwards. Arsenal were always on the move, looking for a play.

We had no creativity or confidence or preparation. Arsenal looked like they had a plan, and organization and knew how to get the ball to each other in the box.

    Dismal.

Yup, 10-4 on Gibson. Just read that, too. Bummer.

Why can't Naismith be paired up front with Lukaku? (He asks naively.) What does Kone provide in that role that Naismith does not? (I think it's a valid experiment, but Kone hasn't really been all that.)

If we get relegated, yeah, it will suck being in the US, as we won't get the TV coverage, or the streaming, etc...

But I can only imagine how it might be among the Reds. Yeah, you'll still be able to go to the games, but Liverpool could be an inhospitable place for Toffees.

It's too dire to even think about.

So, I suggest we don't even go there.

Perhaps the only way to get Barry off the pitch is to play him. Life is full of paradoxes.

A new goalkeeper could save the season.

It's happening right now with our NHL hockey team, the Minnesota Wild.

We were on a stretch of something like 10 losses in 12 games, nowhere near a chance to make the playoffs, and we would have been better off with a dust broom protecting the goal.

We acquired goaltender Devan Dubnyk from another team in the league for a future draft pick.

We've been 15-3-1 since, we're in the playoff hunt, and Dubnyk was named the league's Star of the month for February.

I'm not sayin; I'm just sayin.

Just saw him quoted as saying Howard not responsible for the draw. (Well technically true. The OG made it a draw. Howard would have been responsible for the loss.)

A win tomorrow with our best XI will do far more for our psyche than a loss while preserving our precious top players for City.

Barry has to sit, whatever RM decides. I can't figure that one out.

Heh, yeah, I know. Just kidding around. Tough crowd.

Realistically, I could envision Everton bobbing around middle earth all the way through this campaign. But I hold out hope for a win each weekend, which is probably better than more a few teams in the PL can say.

In American Football, we call it a "rebuilding year." Euphemism for "We're too old and tired (or young and inexperienced) to play effectively. But don't cash in your season tickets, because next year will be different, I'm sure of it!"

    Hello all,

Minnesota USA fan here. I've followed EPL only cursorily until recently, but I really always leaned toward Everton, and at the beginning of this season I decided they were the club I wanted to follow until I die. (Which now appears will be a slow, painful death.)

But even though it's been a rough season, I cannot imagine following any other club. (I also follow the Minnesota Vikings, so you have an idea about my bent towards masochism. Although, I was born in Minnesota, and still live here, so I have little choice.)

Shamefully, one reason for my interest involved Howard after the WC, which I now feel was a stupid, shallow, shortsighted thing. (I still think he could be a good goalkeeper, as he's had his moments, but he's also been inexplicably hideous and boneheaded at times.)

Anyway, I've lurked here for a few months, joined a few weeks ago, first post now.

Like most of you, I've been wincing watching the club play. Thankfully (or not), we get all the matches through our sat provider on NBCSN, and the coverage is superb. But each week, I'm less and less excited to watch. I streamed yesterday's match while at work. (Quickly clicking away if anyone came into my office needing anything.) I felt like it was such a monumental waste of time, but I had a big work task to undertake, so it was as good a procrastination tool as anything.

My first worry yesterday was when we scored the first goal! Noooo! Too early! How many games have we done this? Seems like nearly every one but the Chelsea disaster. But, the first goal isn't the problem, it's that we think a one-goal lead is safe. But it never is. (And apparently, neither is a two-goal lead. Someone above said that we need a three-goal cushion. That's probably true.)

My question, and reason for this post, is to ask: If the team was healthy all at once... having McCarthy, Stones, Naismith, Alcaraz healthy now, and not missing the time earlier from Barkley, Barry and Baines (and any others I'm forgetting), would we be having this dreadful conversation? Is part of the issue simply a lack of continuity, that we're just that thin, that we can't field a top-four team if anyone's injured? Forgive me for not researching thoroughly, but did we have major injuries last year, when we finished fifth in the table?

I'm sure this is a naive question, but so be it. Gotta start somewhere, and this is the thread of the hour. Relegate me if you must.

    Cheers.
