Yesterday’s weird McCarthy on for Rooney substitution - which surprisingly worked to our benefit - makes me wonder whether It might make weird sense to use Rooney-McCarthy substitution periodically or even regularly.

Neither player should play more than 60-70 minutes, if that.  My guess is that most on TT desperately hope McCarthy can play regularly - as both Gana and Schneiderlin have plenty of critics - but agree with Matt that it's dangerous to push him.  Rooney divides opinions: some  think he’s past it, whereas others (including me) think he’s a key playmaker, especially playing deep and roving.  I’d like to see some of these scenarios:

    1. Rooney starts, playing deep as playmaker, with a single DM (Schneiderlin or Gana).  If Everton lead at 60 minutes, bring on McCarthy to replace him, giving us 2 DMs to protect lead.  If Everton are behind, replace Rooney with an attacker from bench.

    2. McCarthy starts, either as single DM or paired with another DM or (preferably) Davies.  Rooney on bench.  If we lead at 60-65 minutes, replace McCarthy with a DM.  If behind, bring on Rooney or some other attacker.

Agree with all of the above bar Schniederlin, he's afraid of playing the ball forward and make far too many weak tackles at the moment, I know he's better but we're just not seeing it on the pitch.

I loved McCarthys emerging and hard tackles, as teamwe need to do more and stop allowing the opposition time on the ball.

  2. 2 points from 12,  with virtually no shots on target, we would be calling for Koeman or Unsworth heads by now if they were still in position.

He set us up yesterday to absorb all pressure and let Utd pass across the park, hopefully not allowing any through balls, first half work, they only had a couple of long range efforts, and I thought we were in with a chance of a victory, they didn't look that good to me.

2nd half they started to play through the lines better,, we failed to respond, with  Rooney clearly struggling after being ill and needed replacing, Niasse just can't play the lone striker, McCarthy brought some bite into the side and we started to play more attacking but we're undone by some self inflicted errors, should have played 2 up front once were we're behind, keeping Niasse on and Schniederlin instead.

Only because no-one was putting in a challenge. It took McCarthy to come on before someone stepped in properly.

We make it far too easy for teams to play against us, as we let them pass across their lines without putting any real tackles in. mcCarthys introduction brought our first string of aggressive but fair tackles this season ( Gana TBF has won a few but not particularly strong) if we're letting teams do that, it's all,too easy for them to know they can move the ball around without any real challenges coming in. There must have been at least 10 half arsed challenges from Keane and Schniederlin last night that failed to win the ball. Yes we will get some yellows,  it I'd rather one for a touch tackle, than the inevitable trips were end up making as we're chasing the ball ( Keane bottled out of a tackle which led to Rooney booking if remember right)

If fit McCarthy has to be a starter on Friday.

Allardyce said in the quote he is one they would like back so I am guessing not!

In fairness I wasn' expecting him to play much part in this season. It was a really bad injury and he might even be better for getting a full pre-season under his belt rather than coming back for a couple of games at the end of this one.

Me too Bailey, best we don't rush him back, although mentally he may want to play at least once this season and not miss a complete one.

  5. We sat too deep all game, and rode our luck a fair few times. Poor ref, many decisions going against us.

But we've gained another point, not conceded, and will have grown in confidence from that. We need to link winning the ball in our half through to the attacker (s)better , DCL is far too isolated, but he puts in a shift every game, he still, needs to be more clinical though.

Schnierdelin improved as the game went on, still think he needs to move forward with the ball more.

Lennon hassled, Keane grew more confident, Jags made some greatvlast gasp stops, Willliams solid for his half, Kenny maturing every game, Cuco better but still not good enough for the PL. Sigyy was Ok was expecting ore from him in Rooney absence.

Still haven't seen anything from Sandro to make me think he's any substance, kept running away from the ball, and DCL.

As many have said,  under Koeman we would have been battered once again. Got to be pleased we weren't.

I am glad he is back to his best, as he is a tremendous player for us, full of energy, tackling and getting the ball to our more creative players.

To be fair to Schniederlin he is more of s sweeper sat in front of the back 4, who reads the game well and can launch attacks himself with his better passing, and he is very good at it.

The trouble is, as any Everton fan will tell you, but Koeman and so far Sam could not, is that they both can't play effectively in the same side.

I like Gana, his energy is vital to the team IMHO.

Having been to every home game this season, him and Schniederlin just don't work well together.

I've not seen Schniederlin launch any attacks yet, he's great at going sideways or backwards. He used to be better, don't know what's happened to him.

Gana does get caught out of position and on th wrong side of his man at times, but he is far more positive in all aspects of his game, if he could work on his shooting skills, he would be so much better.

But we all have to agree on the next player to take the blame though.

We shouldn't pick on players, but of course we're going to do cos we're passionate about our team. If he scored a worldly like he did for the saints against Arsenal, I'd be happier with him, but he just gives me the heebie geebees when he's near the ball 90% of the time, no other player does...... thankfully, yes I get pissed of with every single one at times, but no where near 90%

OK I did with Williams earlier in the season but he's been good the last 3 games, maybe being having Holgate alongside is the reason which I've said elsewhere.

  8. Sorry Bill, I think Holgate as a CB is vital, he has been winning virtually all of his aerial challenges, and alongside Williams ( who I slated earlier in the season) they've been pretty solid since the West Ham game. I think Holgates speed lets williams relax a bit and brings a better game out of him.

how about Lennon at LB and Vlasic in front of Kenny?
