With Rom I see a glimer of hope with his back to goal play. Thje glimmer of hope is that he is not thinking about his next ball before he has it under control. He seems to be concentrating on just getting it under and then making his choice.
 
When I moved into a central role from out wide and played as a target man I had a pretty good team mate who coincidentally was at Everton up to 14, his control was daft - his nickname was velcro. He said one of the tricks is to relax when it comes to you, if you are thinking about "must control and lay off to that man there - you tense up, relax and stay soft footed".
 
Rom seems to be doing that, I have to hold my hands up and admit he has done some pieces of control that were beyond him. I do think we will still see the odd shinner but he is making progress.
 
I honestly do think that whatever anyone thinks of Kone, he is gonna benefit Rom. 2 lads up front 6ft 2+ with decent size, strength and pace is a nightmare. I love Naismith and he is one of the best in the air but I honestly think those 2 could be a good wrecking ball for Naisy to come on in the last 20 minutes or so.

I dont subscribe to the theory that we are 'on the edge of the relegation battle but not in the thick of it.' To me, its like getting pregnant. You either are, or you are not. You cannot be a little bit pregnant. Similarly with relegation. You are either under threat of relegation or you are not. We are, and will remain so now unless or until we become mathematically safe.
 
Results yesteday could have been better, could have been worse. Burnley and Villa will now really believe. Leicester and QPR are almost gone. Sunderland, who most believe are now in freefall have taken only 6 points from the last thirty. But before we start getting excited, we have only taken seven.
 
The biggest dangers now are not realising we are in a relegation battle and thinking we are too good to go down.
 
Three points today, a draw in Kiev/Kiev and a win at QPR next week and then I will breathe a little easier.

It was a funny old game, the first half hour was toxic and was as bad as any game Ive ever been to. When McCarthy was telling the Street End to calm down while he was in the process of gifting them the first goal I thought it was going to get really ugly. I hate to think what would have happened if they had scored from Alcaraz's suicide backpass! But they did turn it around and it ended up a really good atmosphere

It is the middle paragraph that's the mystery, the squad hasn't changed much and you can add more names to the ones in brackets and you still will not be able to show one player who's has performed better this season than last.
 
Infact an impossible question would be, who's been Evertons player of the season so far, for me every one of them has been below par.Coleman in his last few games has been one of the few to show flashes of last season, mystery is the right word.
 
Losing Pienaar and Osman for this season, two who can create things obviously hasn't helped, but Martinez has been around long enough to have seen this could happen.

I think its more a case of Roberto is responsible for the atmosphere.
 
I said the same last season when results were going in our favour , there is no atmosphere because the football is boring. Watching Stones and Jags pass the ball back and forth to each other all game hardly gets you on the edge of your seat

If Martinez was watching, he would probably pick out the positives of a 5-1 home defeat.........like, we scored a goal and at least they didn't score 6......Oh well, if we didn't laugh, we'd cry !

Missing McCarthy for so long certainly hasn't helped, but this hasn't been good enough for a long time.
We need to win three games as a minimum, four ideally, Newcastle, QPR, Villa and Sunderland should all be winnable games. United are certainly beatable, but the way we are playing now I couldn't see us doing much against them as we need more fight. Spurs season could be over when we play them so hopefully that helps too.
 
Come the summer, should we survive, we need a massive clear out. Pienaar, Distin, Kone, Osman, Gibson, Hibbert, Mirallas. Some of these cant stay fit, others don't want to be here, we need players who can be available and committed.
 
The team needs to be built around Joel, Stones, McCarthy, Ross and Lukaku. There is massive potential in Besic, but him and McCarthy together can't work with Naismith infront of them as there is just no creativity in the middle, Ross has to play but he can't get out of this rut either.
 
Stones needs a partner for the long term, time to move Jags on for me. I'd love Ryan Shawcross, maybe Ron Vlaar on a free. We need a bit of competition for Lukaku, Danny Ings if he doesn't go to the shite. A winger or two, one must be a left footer, both need pace! I think Valencia at United will be available but I'm not sure we could convince him.
If we have the money for one serious signing, get a midfielder. If there is someone out there who could dominate centrally, win headers, win tackles, put a bit of fear into the opposition and then have the ability to pick a pass going forward, and move the play quickly, that's where I'd be happy to throw £20m plus for the right man.
 
We need more nasty in our team, we are just too nice. No one is scared of us, or any of our players. That's why I like Shawcross, he's horrible, and his first thought is defending, but forwards seem to be scared of his elbows and his studs, we need more of this.
 
We are too good to go down, we have too many good players, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Until we win three or four games, I'll continue to shit myself.

It's not about how good or bad this players been, or that player, it's been a collective clusterfuck. And that, really, is our problem. If it was a case of Lukaku being shit we'd manage. If it was Mirallas being a half-arsed fairy we'd manage. If it was McCarthy not being up to his usual standards we'd manage. But the fact is you can go through every single player this season and throw some shit at them and it'd stick like fucking super glue.
 
As a team we've been absolute shit.

Martinezs' job is safe because,
 
A. We are still in Europe.
 
B. Bill wouldn't sack him......yet.
 
C. We had a good season last year.
 
D. The usual question, if not him, then who !
 
For those reasons, I'd say no...............................if Moyes offered to start next week I'd say yes.

Thing is Matt, whilst this fact is correct, I've never once seen you or come to that matter any other Rom 'fan', ever say they thought Lukaku was world class, the best forward Everton have ever had, potentially a 30 goal a seaon player.No, I'm guesing you probably have enough sence to know we could have bought a player who through luck or skill could have scored more goals (though he would probably have neede a far better Everton team behind him) than Lukaku.
 
I agree with you that, whilst we know he can do better ( so could about 8 other Everton players), the fact is that we (Everton) have been poor and the tactics questionable, so we need to embrace what he HAS done an Not what he hasn't.At times they all need a kick up the arse includng Martinez.
