I just think using Wigan as a benchmark is a bit unfair in regards to Martinez's ability.

As I have mentioned before, his points tally across those seasons averaged less than one point per season worse than the 3 years before he was at Wigan who at that point were spending much more on wages and transfers. His managerial record also has an FA Cup winner which isnt bad for an 'assistant' manager. This 'assistant' manager also took your beloved Moyes' team apart in our own back yard with a bucket load of injuries and far less resources. The same man who then executed the perfect game plan to beat City in the final itself.

I don't deny that Martinez has some frailties but he has a lot of positives with the way he handles his players, his philosophy of how the game should be played and his ability to win big games. He may or may not build upon the foundations built by Moyes but he is the best domestic candidate that I can see alongside Laudrup who probably wouldn't come here anyway.

None of these players play across the back line except for Beausejour, and he's no Baines by any means.. I definitely wouldn't consider them a strong side.

Wigan may have been relegated under Martinez, but I don't believe that reflects his quality. He's also won a trophy and Wigan is in Europe now, which was our main focus before this season started.

Everton is a superior team with superior players than Wigan. They don't run the same risk of relegation. Pundits have been expecting Wigan to be relegated for years.

Av both Villa and Liverpool wanted Martinez.

I'm not sure what any managers playing career has to do with it but Moyes Fergie Mourinho Where hardly house hold names. To say he's assistant material is very harsh on his abilities then to suggest Round who is just that is baffling..

Round has shown very little of himself in any managerial regard apart form the odd post match interview and has no high end experience in the hot seat what so ever.

Moyes was an unknown quantity at the time but was given time to develop the squad and himself in the process and we are past the point now of taking a risk on an unknown as we did back then.

Martinez is not my first choice but I can see why he his others and I do think he could do a good job here if given the opportunity.

It still raises a smirk when you remember the panic some were in - and must be now - that when Moyes finally vacates (as he has) the club will be in free-fall and suffer a relegation or very near miss.

Ok, the stabilizers may be off, now Moyes has gone (or will go) and there's a bit more freedom to roam than the usual restrictions when the Scot finally clears his desk, and it may a be a little rocky at first with a new name in charge, but it's ridiculous to even envisage the club will be relegated now safety-first Davie has taken employment elsewhere. Just saying no panic, that's all

But as you rightly said, it's all just talk at the moment. We still await who will takeover from Moyes - and somebody, somewhere, will be upset with the choice you can be sure - but the proper time to maybe address this is when the actual individual has been disclosed and then we can let loose

    One Question:

11 years ago who would have put David Moyes on their shortlist?

    - no premiership experience
    - some success with Preston NE, but their were plenty of other championship teams doing better.
    - no european experience

He obviously had the right skills to do a fantastic job though!

I think Martinez is a similar mould and he would be my choice.

If we selceted an experienced (top division and european) and successful with a large transfer/wage budget and European I think it would be a very expensive mistake with us probablyt ending up the next Leeds Utd.

I think a common theme that I am seeing is that people who assess a managers performance based on common perceptions and very few accompanying facts - (pretty much on the back of a fag packet) think that Martinez would have us leaking goals, losing games but playing nice football...

It's all the same when when people refer to Moyes Everton as 'plucky', 'hard to beat', 'built on a shoe string' rather than - 'full of international quality' 'highly paid', 'top 8 salaries'.

If people are going to have a strong opinion on Martinez, they need to make the relevant research to have an informed opinion. Steve_E just demonstrated the power of google.

I believe in Martinez, my concerns are his defensive record but taking into account the quality of his defenders and his salary budget I think he can overcome them at Everton, he has missed his strongest defenders for some time now. Attacking wise and philosophy he is school of science.

Martinez added to Sky Sports: "We have conceded far too many goals. Going forward we have been magnificent, I think it's been our best season in terms of performances, but the injuries in the back line are something I have never seen before.

"To have four, five, even six players missing in the back line and our keeper affected with injury - our captain Antolin Alcaraz, Ivan Ramis out for the season, Ben Watson with a broken leg, (Jean) Beausejour, (Maynor) Figueroa... We have to have so many different partnerships and keep changing, and that caused us problems."

I think even the likes of the top 4 teams would struggle with that situation, bravo to martinez for winning the FA cup.

Win the league, and win the cup, and you are in our good books, but come second, and runner up in the cup, and you're sacked.

Poison job that one. You can't manage in this country and guarantee trophies.

Ive not seen Brentford play this season, but I admit I'm intrigued by Jake Bidwells development. He has made 50 appearances for a team who is in the League 1 Playoff final in a few days. I would be disappointed if he wasn't given a chance to compete next season. I know he hasn't been as highly touted as some players, and doesn't develop on Footy Manager, but something has to be said for his appearances, and the teams performance.

Great shout. Not really considered but actually, could do very well. Works with little, to no financial clout and still produces very good teams.

Worked miracles with Hertha, considering their lack of funds and also saw the sale of their best players, only to finish well. Doing a grand job at Borussia Moch., 4th and 8th place finishes in the last two seasons, with a very limited squad.

Will keep an eye on that one, thanks DRS.

Sibdane reacted to Mirallas in Longest Thread For Drivel (or the Romelu Lukaku thread)
In an interview to a Belgian radio show today, Romelu Lukaku expressed his wish to play one level higher than West Brom. He said he didn't want to return to Chelsea per sé, but that he wanted to get back in touch with European football.

Chelsea will definitely keep him in the EPL. So there's 7 teams that are better than West Brom who'll play European football. Neither of the Manchesters need him. Arsenal and Tottenham are too close competitors to Chelsea, plus they're from London. That leaves Liverpool FC and Everton FC.

It's vague and it's speculation, but it's his wish and it's a loan that would make sense to both teams, but I suppose he'd get more chances to play at EFC than at LFC, because of Sturridge. All I'm saying is that it is a signal and with a bit of 1+1=2, we can take notice of this. Plus Fellaini and especially Mirallas are buddies of Lukaku

Oh he's Belgian? Darnit didn't know that... Well I suppose I'm gonna have to face some repercussions from certain Swedish individuals for this then....

I was afraid it might make us look small time today but it was in fact the complete opposite, I'm glad to admit I was wrong. Moyes couldn't have been more professional, the team reminded us all that there is a lot to look forward too with the quality we have in the squad, and what a brilliant atmosphere. Everything was absolute class - that's just how Everton do things. Proud to be an Evertonian!

Sibdane reacted to Newty82 in Martinez confirmed as new manager
Well, to weigh in with my own views, and my first proper post...I'm taking a deep breath here...

Firstly, whoever comes in has got a brilliant first 11 to play with. Behind that first 11 is a bit of a problem, we all know more depth is needed to the squad. The debate around the youngsters will rage on...but with our top drawer (albeit rented) training facilities and youth set up, I would like to see some of the young ones given a bit more opportunity. Whoever it is will need to do this.

Finacially, we are still going to be a club with a lower budget. I know peeps rave on about the new TV deal, but every club is going to get extra so I only expect player prices and wages to rise as a result of this money...so it doesnt change the financial playing field. Someone needs to be used to working on a tight budget.

Everyone wants modern, Euro style attacking football. Our first 11 can do this but the next man must get rid of this 'sit back after 70mins' mentality. Free flowing football has to be the mentality from the off.

For me, Martinez from day one. He is also only 39 and will know he will be given time. But I honestly believe that with his view on football tactics and our current crop of players, he would fit right in. He turned down Villa and that shite, but he was concerned about stability and how his role would be played out. Here, he has 100% control. A lot of people criticise BK, in some ways so do I, but the way he handled Moyes, relationship wise, must be an attraction for Martinez. Plus, Wigan are going down and I dont think they'll be back anytime soon...Europa + Championship? No chance!

I have always disliked Benitez, his arrogance drives me crazy. But, he is my second choice and from his quotes today, he is flirting himself a bit I think. His record speaks for itself. But I doubt he could handle the lack of money.

    Phew!

For me I would take Benitez but after Laudrup and Martinez. The next manager will have to deal with high levels of expectation from day one. That is not something that Laudrup orMartinez have had to deal with yet. Not saying either of them couldn't deal with it but Benitez has taken it in his stride, and with great dignity, at Chelsea.

I would prefer Martinez or Laudrup but would be ok with Benitez. Now is not the time to promote from within. Ournewmanager has to reflect our status as a top 6 club with serious and credible ambitions to break into the top two or three.

I know i'm repeating myself a lot here about Benitez but, blue glasses off, YES! Forget that he managed liverpool, forget that we all hate him for calling Everton a small club, forget his smug little face....Look at his credentials:

La Liga (twice), Uefa cup, Champions league, Uefa super cup, Fa Cup, supercoppa italiana, FIFA world club cup.

Everton are at a juncture where they are no longer looking to stay afloat, they are looking to move forward into the top 4/5 of the premier league and into Europe (hopefully with some rich dude coming in to give us the financial clout that's really needed). We need a manager with these sorts of credentials who knows how to win things. Out of the managers available, he is my choice - in spite of the Liverpool connections.
