Romey 1878
Well, I am absolutely bursting with pride over what we did last night. It was almost a perfect performance, and the second in a row (in my opinion at least). I've criticised Moyes for his tactics so today I'm going to praise him because, once again, he got his tactics spot on. And the players were just immense, every single one of them. You couldn't fault any of them because they all gave everything last night. But not only did they put the effort in, there was an unbelievable amount of quality on show too, both in defence and in attack. We made Sunderland look ordinary, we made their best players totally anonymous so they couldn't hurt us, and when we got the chance we hurt them big time and should have hurt them even more. If we'd have won 4-0 last night it would have still flattered Sunderland, we were that good. Out thought, out fought, outplayed, outmuscled... that's what we did to them last night, that's what Moyes did to O'Neill. I was worried before the game that we'd bottle it, again, but I needn't have worried. That was actually quite a comfortable game for me to watch, with very few scares. The defence oozed confidence and whenever they were tested (which was a rarity) they more than stood up to the challenge. Once again we won the midfield battle and our midfielders just controlled the game, and that's where it was won again IMO. Our midfield owning it brought a calmness to the defence because they knew they were protected, and the midfield also helped out two forward players because they pushed up to stop the forward players becoming isolated. And they were anything but isolated last night, and that was due to the magnificent partnership of Fellaini and Gibson. Those two mop up everything infront of the defence, and then one of them distributes the ball and then just sits infront of the defence which allows the other, and the two wide players, to stream up in support of the forwards. I just think we have the perfect balance in midfield at the moment. Gibson is proving to be a shrewd signing and I'm looking to be dead wrong about him, and I'm so glad about that as well! Onwards Evertonians! Howard - Didn't have very much to do in all honesty but when he was called upon he did his job, and his decision making at corners was good too. Neville - Had a brilliant game tbh, and because of him their danger man McClean was barely in the game. He stayed tight to him all game long so that he couldn't get a run on him. That was key because if he gets a run on you he will destroy you. Heitinga - Absolutely immense. The calmness he showed at the back was just pure quality. This despite Bendtner, who has a good few inches on him, going at him thinking he could dominate him with that advantage. Johnny wasn't having any of that and dealt with him brilliantly. He hit a lot of long balls but pretty much every single one of them was aimed at one of our players and usually found it's mark. Distin - One dodgy header in the whole game and that was his only fault, other than that he was as good as Heitinga and their partnership looks concrete. They compliment each other perfectly. Baines - He was dynamite going forward and linked up superbly with Gueye all game long. Sometimes things didn't come off but they looked very dangerous down the left. And the block/tackle he put in on Bendtner when I was sure he was going to score was gold. Osman - He frustrated me at the start of the game becaue he was getting knocked off the ball a bit too easily but once he got his quick feet working he was brilliant and the Sunderland players couldn't handle him. Some of his link-up play with Cahill and Jelavic was actually beautiful. Oh and THAT volley... Fuck. Me. If that had gone in it'd have brought the house down. Gibson - Like against Swansea he wasn't a stand out player but he was incredibly effective. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, I mean it as a compliment. He went about his game with the minimum of fuss, but he clearly makes us tick. He has an amazing passing range, better than Fellaini's, and that always has us on the front foot because every pass is a positive one, and has a purpose. He was our engine while Fellaini is our destroyer. Fellaini - He was just class wasn't he? And he benefits insanely from having Gibson next. Due to Gibson he can do his defensive duties but then roam a bit further forward too because he knows Gibson will just hold station while he causes havoc further up field. He hardly broke a sweat but he must have covered a crazy amount of ground last night, he was everywhere and put paid to so many Sunderland attacks. He was like a greedy kid with the ball, "mine". Gueye - I thought in the first few minutes he looked scared and like a rabbit caught in the headlights. But he grew into the game the longer it went on, and as previously said he looked to have a good thing going with Baines and his confidence grew. His ball across the box to set up Jelavic was a peach too, and he put a similar ball in later on in the game but it wasn't converted. The longer the game went on the happier I was that he was playing instead of Drenthe because he was a lot more intelligent with the ball, actually looked like he knew what he was doing with the ball, and didn't just run into players. Cahill - He looks to have a new lease of life playing alongside Jelavic and last night is the best I've seen him play for a very long time. He was looking like the warrior Cahill we've all loved since he arrived here. He epitomised our entire performance IMO. He fought for everything and was so unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. It's crazy just how quickly he's formed an understanding with Jelavic, it was fucking brilliant to watch at times. Each of them just knew what the other was doing andthey fed of each other expertly. Jelavic - He was so good last night, he was everything you want in a forward. I know he missed a couple of chances but I think his quality was there for all to see. He linked up with the midfield all night long, whether that was winning flick ons for them to run on to or holding the ball up and then playing little triangles with them, and he brought the best out of Cahill. And he took his goal so smoothly and calmly. He's going to be a massive player for us. My MOTM.

Ha I'll quite happily eat my words this morning blueboy, I didn't think we'd turn up because let's be honest, we never have for big away games! As for being armchair!....don't be daft now, I've been to about 50 odd grounds with everton and have had a season ticket since 95/96 (barring one season when I was working abroad). The fact that I haven't been happy at all this season yet still forked out nearly £600 for next years ticket means everton DO need supporters like me...the ones who don't just sack it when things aren't good. I might be a moaning so and so at times but rightly so at some of the performances put in this season, I still go the game regardless. Glad you enjoyed last night but it doesn't make you fan of the year kid! Anyway we've got fucking no chance against Liverpool ;-).

Yurp...good times 3 Reasons to win now, beating them, getting to the FA Cup final and a EUropa spot...too many positives. No motivation needed, surely? Blue 250
How nice to watch a game and actually be relaxed! Can only echo what's been said, cetainly the best game from Cahill for an age, he seems to click with Jelavic, who I believe will only get better. There seems a great team spirit at the moment, that's something you cant buy luckypool!! The pressure is all on the rs, they HAVE to win.....we're the ones without a pot to piss in. They will obviously pick up their game for us, it's such a big game for them. The peoples final, Everton v Spurs.

MikeO
It'd be nice though if there were a few choruses of "Merseyside Merseyside Merseyside" and "Are you watching Manchester?" pre KO though. Those were really special moments at Wembley in the eighties I have to say...the whole ground singing together. Was real hair on the back of the neck time (and I'm from Surrey ). Guest
I was working last night got the missus to tape it and watched it "live" when i got in. I cant remember a game of such importance when we played so well. Spurs 95 semi? We looked "on it" straight away probably due to the fact that we got stiched up getting to the ground late. To every man we were superb and played some really good football. Its been touched on already but Gibbo and Felli compliment each other so well, Gibbo for me has been so impressive and i must admit i slated him when he came but what a bargain! I think he is 24 so he has got a big future infront of him for us, cant see Rodders taking his place cos i think Davey really rates him. Again, Johnny was pure quality and i think Jelavic is gonna be a monster for us. He has got the lot, good in the air, quick, good feet and although he might be trying to be too clynical finding the corner you know his next chance wont be far away i think the lad is going to be a superstar. If we play like that and go for teams we have got a great chance of going to the final. P.s well done Maggie you had a cracking game lad

I was thinking similar myself....not quite so relaxing because we didn't get the goals we deserved but as a performance it was comparable. TheOutlaw
Thought we was good! Thought Cahill was brilliant. Looks like his old self with Jelavic. I thought Darren Gibson was not the best. I have nothing against the guy but i just don't think he's good enough. Also, the atmosphere was brilliant!
Guest blueboy122
Does anybody know what happened with us arriving late. I was waiting for our team coach to arrive for ages and it eventually came by police escort? Moyesey looked fuming when he got off the bus, he scowled and said something to either a steward or the group of police that took the coach on the escort? He was so fuming he didnt really acknowledge the everton fans! Although he did manage a smile when he ran into the players entrance!
Dalziel Kane
From what I can ascertain there was a major delay on the A690 route to the stadium. Coach and other traffic were held up.
flaminfox
I think at the moment with Heitinga, Fellaini, and Jelavic we might have the most motivated Everton side that wants to win a trophy than ever. We deserve to finally get some silverware.. COYB
Guest blueboy122
Another question I need to ask is did anyone see what happened when Cattermole went kicking off on neville? Why was he kicking off, I saw that cattermole trying to push our players out the way to get to Neville. He is a fucking idiot that Cattermole he is the definition of a thug, clearly neville isnt the type of player to try and hurt anyone or say anything offensive to them. I just dont understand what does through cattermoles head, why would anyone want to kick off on phill neville is beyond me.

Guest blueboy122
I'd love to see Heitinga tagged in half way through (if there was anything left!) Distin would eat him alive the man is a machine! I couldnt really see what was happening when the scuffle broke out but cattermole squared up to distin as well? When phill neville tackled that mclean or shoulder barged him what ever, I just saw that cattermole make a b-line for neville and then tim cahill saw him so chased him and grabbed him back. Tony Hibber would have knocked cattermole out anyway, I think he is hard as nails old tony.
