The GLBT debate

Matt

Recommended Posts

guys, Zoos beliefs are his own. Whether you disagree or not is your own choice, but no need in calling him narrow minded, questioning his education, etc. Hes not going around beating up people, hes voicing his opinion.

Im not 100% comfortable with homosexuality if im honest. I dont think its natural at all. I also dont like the excessively camp (gay or not) men who are so over the top it winds me up - dont ask me why, Im not sure I know, but it does. I dont like that its everywhere at the moment - you cant escape it.

However, I also believe that you dont choose who you fall in love with, who you fancy, whatever and I believe you absolutely have a right to dip your nib into whatever ink you like (so long as its consensual). And, back on topic, I completely believe in equal rights for everyone - except human trafficers, rapists and paedophiles. I know I should believe in equal rights for the 3 exceptions (there may be others), but honestly dont believe they deserve them.

Just because people disagree with it, and dont want to show their support of the GLBT movement, should not reflect in a negative way on the person. Its their belief. If their beliefs start affecting people in a negative way, then actions should be taken, but before then just accept that not everyone has the same stance.

Like I said, there seems to be no escape from it at the moment. I understand why its everywhere, GLBT people finally have a say and society is allowing them to exercise the right as equal people to participate in the society, which they have every right to participate in. I'd just like a bit more balance, some equality, or just not have it shoved in my face. People want to be GLBT? Fine, go for it! Im not comfortable with it but it doesnt affect me, so do what you want. Absolutely, treat them as equals. But dont flood every media stream with it, and dont promote ideas that you have to agree with it without being some facist monster.

Balance, equality, peace. Thats all I would be asking for, for all.

Matt, straightness is everywhere as well, inescapable for gay people.

I know, which is why I mentioned balance. It will happen when GLBT isnt controversial anymore, and accepted in society, but until then it will be more visible. I suppose rightly so as the campaign for equal rights is promoted.

But there are certain camp people who drive me nuts. Like Avin said though, there are dickheads everywhere and its not sexual-orientation related.

Matt, don't you think the word inescapable is a little harsh?

Take a walk through a city shopping centre and you'll pass many different people, all of whom can be categorized by at least somebody in a negative light.

Its what I see, at least in the media (TV shows, facebook, etc).

On the streets I dont see it, and when I do its not in my face - usually happy men and women walking holding hands with their partners and enjoying life rather than campaigns and agendas being shoved in front of me.

edit : again, for the record, I agree with the campaign for GLBT to have equal rights, its just the delivery of it thats irritating me

So it'd be OK if it was racial equality he disagreed with then?

As in, "I'm not a racist and I don't go around hurting black people but I think they should all go beck to Africa."

Discrimination against people on the grounds of their sexual orientation is every bit as illegal as discrimination because of their colour.

Some views need to be challenged.

its not thoughts and beliefs that necessarily cause issues, its the actions and negative comments based on them. So long as theres no actions or negative comments, people have the right to believe what they want. He has explained his beliefs, its stopped there. I dont see an issue. I never said his opinion was right or not, I said he was entitled to his opinion.

Yes, challenge by all means, but also accept that some people will think in certain ways. Sometimes it has nothing to do with education, or ignorance - sometimes people just feel the way they do.

That would be my opinion. So long as I don't go beating up black people I'm allowed to one have it aren't I? I'm against homosexuality but I've not once said that gays should be beaten/killed/laughed at etc... so it's pretty shocking to see the responses from some people. If anything I'd say it was narrow minded of the opposition as they have glossed over my post, seen I'm against homosexuality and decided to attack me for it.

I don't agree with homosexuality, it's not natural, I don't believe it should be encouraged. Would I harm a homosexual? Nope, not a chance.

If you'd have been born gay it would be completely natural to you. Nobody is suggesting "encouraging" it, that's just your prejudice and/or fear talking.

What if one of your future kids turns out to be gay (statistically very possible)? Are you going to tell them they're unnatural?

Being gay isn't a choice... It's an illness a mental illness.

Christ Almighty. That's not a good post mate. :dont know:

Opinion. Nobody's opinion is right or wrong.

not thought of it that way to be honest, very good point. I didn't think twice how I would deal with it if my son (if I have one) turns out gay, I'd support him no matter what. My daughter (again, if I have one) will be encourage to be gay, because men can be dicks and I don't like the idea of a guy getting his greasy mitts on her - I imagine that notion will change completely come parenthood

Being gay isn't a choice... It's an illness a mental illness.

thats insane. Entitled to your opinion but that sounds wrong to me

I have no idea what it is, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transexual?

yup

I'm going to add fuel to the fire here. Like I said, I'm all for the equal rights but I don't believe GLBT should be allowed to get married. Hear me out...

I completely believe they should have a recognized union, equal in rights, but for me marriage is a concept founded on religion. As most, if not all religions, are opposed to homosexuality, calling it "marriage" seems strange. I was raised Catholic, so maybe I'm brainwashed in that sense. I'm also completely open to the rejection of this idea too, since there are many who get married who do not have religious beliefs. So why should they be allowed and GLBT not? I don't have any answer. In fact, just writing it makes me realize how daft my belief is. But, it's been my stand point up til now. Looking at what I've written though, I feel stupid.

Will I oppose gay marriage? No. In fact, I've been to civil unions and was very happy to see gay friends making that commitment.

I don't like any discrimination, and find it ludicrous it can be considered a "mental illness". It doesn't matter what colour you are, what religion you are, what your sexual preference is - we are all equal and should be treated as such. That includes those having beliefs to the contrary.

For BB122, Zoo - another question (I'm not trying to single you out, I'm genuinely curious to hear the sides who are against homosexuality), do you enjoy lesbian porn?

Lesbian porn is another irrelevant argument to be fair, that is performed by too super fit girls and is fantasy world like all porn is. Can't be compounded into this debate.

I don't think race, ethnicity, religion can be used in the same argument.

why not? Religion is certainly relevant; it's people following their beliefs that people sometimes disagree with because it's different to what they know. Race/ethnicity too, discrimination because of either because people don't feel comfortable or don't like them is the same.

two super fit girls?! So it's ok if they're hot?!

There are fit lesbians who live in the real world too, I'd still happily watch them going at it.

There's no discrimination though is there. Some people approve of it some people don't.

Your argument is for discrimination in general Matt, that isn't what the debate is about. Do you discriminate against one of the biggest groups of people in the world... Al Quieda (spelling) because they follow their beliefs.... Obviously you would as would everyone.

The term discrimination is used to loosely these days in my opinion. It undervalues the meaning when people are being accused of discrimination just for not agreeing with someone else's belief.

Hey it's all opinion and diplomacy.

I don't understand what your getting at with lesbian porn Matt? It's so far away from the debate it's irrelevant. They are paid actresses who are paid money to perform.
