Beto was bought as a well and truly needed back up to DCL (we where all crying out for this). Where the better options than Beto, most likley for those who could afford it, but I am guessing not at the 'buy now, pay later' terms that we somehow managed to get (and needed) - I am guessing those types of deals are hard to come buy, so you have to take the best you can under the circumstances we are in. DCL has stayed fit (but frustratingly not scoring), so Beto has only been needed in parts. To be fair to any player coming to a new league and country, you need time both at the club and on the pitch to get anywhere near your best - so its a bit unfair to say money has been wasted on him just yet.

On a completely different topic, this is a fascinating article. It's sad to realize just how racist this and other countries were in the past. Frank Soo's parents could never have married in the US because of laws prohibiting mixed marriages, so at least Britain allowed that. What caught my eye, though, was reference to Tyias Browning. I had no idea his name is Jiang Guangtai, that he's a Chinese citizen, and that he plays for the Chinese national team.

Round 20 produced an awful result, which no-one predicted. Only dunlopp and Matt scored two points, the winning total for this round. For the busy month of December, Romey and sibdane were joint winners, although neither managed to top TT Average. For the season, Boston Toffee retains the lead.
We can take stock after 20 games and the end of 2023. The winner per prediction is Bill. He was the inspiration for this weekly prediction game - I only took it over when he struggled to find the time - so it's fitting that he should come out on top. His sad passing is the end of an era.

Absolutely crucial. Fulham is just the type of team we need to beat, so let's hope we won't tire at the end because of first team players playing twice in quick succession.
I was really hoping that Sheffield United would hold on for a 2-2 tie and then win in the replay. They don't have the squad depth to focus on both the league and the cup. The same is true of Luton, though, so today's loss does have a silver lining.

There's something a little incongruous about Ashley Young playing for the Under-21s. It would be like watching a player's dad fill in for a missing player to make up the numbers in a school football game.

Give some key players an important break before a crucial league match next week.
