Dalziel Kane got a reaction from Matt in The greatest names select their greatest games
Got reading through an old sports publication today and in it, was a special feature about 100 specially selected former professional players, or to put it better, greats of the game, and their greatest soccer moments.

    For example -

    Alfredo Di Stefano

"My first titles are the ones that have brought me the most satisfaction - my first league championship with River and Millionarios and the first European Cup with Real Madrid (4 - 3 against Stade De Reims 14 June 1956, when Di Stefano scored the fourth). Above all those however, stands my debut for the Argentinian national side in the 1947 South American Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I don't remember who we were playing (Bolivia, with Di Stefano scoring once in a 7 - 0 victory). What I do remember, is that I was 20 years old, that I was wearing the number nine and that felt an immense satisfaction to be playing for Argentina"

It was interesting to read various names and their selected highlights or one special moment and even one or two of our own past players got involved - with surprising results.

Here are ten selected past 'legends' of the game (or at least recognized past names) and maybe see if you can tell what their one favorite or special moment was of their playing careers. Some may be obvious enough but one or two - you would never have imagined it. Well it's only a bit of harmless fun.

    #1 Alan Shearer

    #2 Tony Adams

    #3 Neville Southall

    #4 Alan Hansen

    #5 Franz Beckenbauer

    #6 Paul Gascoigne

    #7 Marco Van Basten

    #8 Bert Trautmann

    #9 Hristo Stoichkov

    #10 Michel Platini

No prizes on offer this time and answers will be revealed in due course, but you'd be surprised at what they decided on.

What, with no tops on ? I don't think the football association would favor that too much. But I'm all for the women's side to have an attempt.

Appreciate the offer and a surprise of epic proportions to have been given the opportunity, but I'm not worthy of the honor. could have participated on this easily enough but took a night out instead. I'm not deserving of any Stubbs publication when others were at least present and attempted for prizes.

I don't mind purchasing a copy of this when available, it'll be money well spent for once instead of wasted on other pursuits but once again, appreciate the offer but its only fair someone else should have a copy or at least more deserving. Above all else, I wouldn't have known all the games that Stubbs had scored in. There at least, signals not being worthy of a copy Thank you but please let someone else have the opportunity

This was supposed to be a serious issue or piece to begin with.

Above all else, we never recieved an answer from the individual in question before another topic degenerated into a free for all with non relevant absurdities. A possible scope for a civilized debate was rendered void and redundant from post #15 onwards in any estimation. No surprise the new kid stayed out of it.

In one word - Ridiculous. If not belligerent.

£ 85,000,000 for that player - and a £ 300,000 a week salary to go with it ?. Just fuck off

It's just a sad state of affairs and another insult to the game. Hopefully in time, soccer will be in such a state of disarray as it continues, things will be beyond salvation.

If Bale is worth that much, then we can damn well get 100,000,000 for Baines and Fellaini together ?

No wonder I've lost significant interest in the game in recent years. The numbers today are just fucking ludicrous. There has to be a global salary cap for them damn wages and over exaggerated players - but who's going to introduce them ?

Yet another example of an overhyped player selling for almost twice or three times their actual valuation, but there's no sense in fucking argument. It's just a sad state of affairs, as mentioned.

You can argue with the spelling however (ain't - aren't) and other grammatical deficiencies in the above post though. Guess I'll have to do one of those childish animation things to show no malice intended and a harmless observation :shaking fist: , but with that out of the way, however anyone wants to view it, the chances have been there, but unable to have been converted. We're not playing particularly poorly, it is only three games into the season, and it feels sometimes some have Martinez down as a failure at this stage of the season.

This appears as a dupicate thread to what has been discussed before, but that feels a bit unfair to the author who took the time and trouble to put this article together. Appreciate what you have presented here, but it just feels like familair territory to what we have seen already.

This club will be all right. No relegation concerns, maybe a flirt with the UEFA cup places once again, Martinez trial and error in his first season etc. Nobody's expecting miracles. We're simply at the experimental stages some would argue.

It's only right a Welshman should start this weekends game so content with that and only to say I also think we can take three points from this. It's an awkward venue for anyone to visit but we have the capabilities to take a result from this. Only hope the recent Baines and Fellaini business hasn't unsettled the team to any extent. If a third successive draw occurs, it won't be that much of a surprise but I feel we can get maximum points from this.

I'm not all up on computers either, despite working with them for a good thirty years, but in those years and until quite recently things were quite simplistic. Unlike today where it's all fucking techno babble and you need a PC encyclopedia to find your way around and things get more complicated by the year.

You said three hours, I would have given up after three minutes. Just wouldn't have the damn patience for it.

You and many others doubtless, but the truth of the matter being, we're going to be fortunate to get anything over £30,000,000 for the Belgian I'm afraid. Don't be surprised when he is eventually sold for around the 25 million pound mark when the time arises. Anyone holding out for 30 - 40 million for the player - sorry to say, it's not going to happen, but agree he is worth that sum when you look at some of the exaggerated and nonsense prices some players sell for today. It's only that, we're simply not going to recieve anything like that amount.

To the issue in question, if I had £38,000,000, I'd probably waste it in goddamn casinos within one calendar year, or possibly much before, but as many people have said, wouldn't accept such derisory amounts for both players, and it's a little late now to be going ahead with new and high profile purchases in this current transfer opportunity window.

Perhaps above all else, I can't even manage my own goddamn money, let alone expect someone else to manage theirs. I can only hope for the benefit of this here thread, they put it to better use, or are a little more prudent with spending and costs.

Just leave it Mr Quinn. If people seriously want to believe Everton will bring in up to forty or fifty million for that player alone, then they're entitled to their beliefs, but I've had enough of living in fantasy land sometimes. It's all to do with these fucking rise in prices, where players - good players - are sold for way more than their actual value and in the end you're looking at silly prices that are something of an embarrassment to the players involved.

G Bale - 86 million was it - real value price - 35 million, anything over 40 would be absurd

A Carroll - 25 million, or was it 35 ? FFS - real price valuation - 10 million, anything over 15 would seem too much

    F Torres - 50 million - real price valuation - 25 million, 30 would seem a little too much

    and so on.

Point being, you can appreciate why many want so much money for Fellaini, to keep up with the other asinine and exaggerated prices of overpriced players and not to feel cheated, but for the last time, we're not going to recieve much over 25 million this time, and I think that's about his real value now (see the above), and furthermore, we make a ten million pound profit from the sale from whence he arrived from Standard Liege.

The result is the main thing above all else. Yes we only sneaked through against a lower league opposition, and extra time was needed to seperate the two sides but it's still a progression. Take this opportunity to applaud Stevenage for making it difficult and giving the crowd a scare and so nearly pulling off a surprise tonight, and Martinez did field a severely weakened side for this competition, with expansive changes of usual personnel, but in the end it was enough to get through, but many wouldn't have envisaged such a close call. Pleased to have got through, but we'll have to improve a little if we're really going to go a long way in this competition. Regardless of caliber of opposition, I would have fielded the strongest side available tonight, rather than take chances with a changed or weakened squad. In the end, we just about got away with it.

I don't have no issue with the individual in question. If David wanted to inaugurate a special piece on this new participant it's his business, but as the other said, could have been done a little more discreetly. Maybe a mention in the Shoutbox away from non-registered members would have been sufficient. Not air it for all to see. Just think it's a little unfair on the name in question. Others wouldn't have wished for their names to be highlighted also, unless for Birthday occasions, or in the authors case, coming back from a serious illness.

I just think there's ways to do things and ways not to, but there's no harm done on this issue.

The only thing is, and perhaps most relevant, is the player we had from Southend United in the 1990s was spelled with two L's, while the new kid chooses to go about his business with only the one (L), and while highly unlikely it's his real name, seemed strange as not many could make such a fundamental spelling error with regards to a previous player, regardless of stature or the fact he was a small name or largely forgotten player etc.

I wasn't even aware there was a game tonight.

This should have been a 3 pm start on a Saturday, but what can you do. Appears it was a rather dull and mundane game, and then you realize one of the managers involved is David Moyes.

Probably a great many people were getting excited or foaming at the mouth in anticipation of tonights fixture, but it turned out to be a poor game then, and with any good fortune, those two points dropped for each side may benefit others by end of season in the race for the league championship. I wouldn't want either of these to win it again, and hope they don't.

The only mystery to me, is how Bale warrants a price tage of (what was it), £ 90,000,000 ?

Ok he's a decent player, got some fine attributes, but that level of money just for a footballing individual is just goddamn stupid, if not belligerent. And it's only going to set the bar higher for other clubs to follow when it goes through, with someone eventually playing one hundred million for a player. And that time can't be far off. It's one of the biggest frustrations I have with soccer today , prices simply getting out of hand and the exaggerated and stupid prices seen about now with players who realistically, usually aren't even worth half, or even a third, of what they eventually sell for. Bale I would estimate, has a valuation of around forty million. The prices and valuations regarding this player just recently have been goddamn ridiculous to say the least.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone from Serie A who made the rumored bid, (and that's pretty much all it may entail, just a lazy rumor that started on some tired 'social' network page with some bored individuals and will invariably come to nothing) but I was looking at someone like Juventus or Inter Milan coming in. I could actually see Bale playing in Italy and adapting to the change away from the EPL. He could fit right in.

True that 25 million seems a little cheap in todays market with exaggerated prices, but right now would be inclined to take it. At least we make a ten million profit on what we initially paid. I can't see him going for the 30 or 40 million some have suggested.

There could be a good five or six months of bad weather ahead this year including hail, rain, snow, mist, and other fine elements to enjoy. Last year the winter actually lasted from November to this years March, and I tried to enjoy every moment of it. Simply can't abide all those fucking shitty hot days and everyone sweating and sitting around in deckchairs and sun loungers while others have to make an effort or jobs to do. I can't stand the summer much, so moving away from that slowly and on to the fall and winter itself. This could well be my favorite time of year. April is the goddamn worst, so got some room to maneuver. Should be easier to sleep at night also with cooler temperatures and no getting light at 3 AM bullshit. Not looking back.

It's always the fucking same. Each saturday evening, sundays and mondays. The favored teams and big names against lesser sides that may be up for a beating or simply an excuse to strut around like overweening fucking peacocks, while the armchair brigade just sit back on their asses with their sodas and popcorn. I've noticed this for a long time now so a bit late in brining this to light but you can't dispute it.

I don't like the way some get special treatment, and not only that, it's goddamn boring if not predictable. Sadly the days of soccer at three PM on a saturday afternoon and all in together is a thing of the past, but what can you do. I concur that it's a regrettable situation.
