It's not a realistic expectation tho, it misunderstands that every player is different and matures differently. Some players are geniuses at 18 then fade (Fowler, Owen, Woodgate), others emerge much later (Les Ferdinand, Vardy). Are we really suggesting that Barkley has had enough time to 'come good', and we're getting to the point of saying he isn't good enough? Fans who give him shit don't understand football as far as I'm concerned, he's basically being pulled apart for not being the best player in the league, he needs wholehearted support not the gobshite garbage getting hurled at him. He has better stats for his age than Scholes ffs, what do people want??

Please take 10 minutes to read some of these posts on the Sunderland forum - it really puts things into perspective. So proud of our club and the fans. Brilliant.

A £10m severance payment on a sacked manager - and a donation 1/50th of that has made a potential life saving difference to a little boy.

How the football world is indeed crazy, at least we can try and keep an eye on the important things eh.

To add to this, my 9 year old (who's exceptionally caring anyway) said this morning part of him didn't mind if we lost last night because it would have made that little boy happy and he may not get to be happy much longer.

That's what football should be about. I was a proud Dad this morning when he said that.

I'm sure there is something about scouted players and how Walsh is able to go about signing them in the terms agreed between Everton and Leicester. Hopefully the grace period was just for the summer window.

Regardless, I'm somewhat happy we didn't overdo it in the transfer market this summer. Continuity is important for morale. And, we made adjustments where we most clearly needed them. We didn't address every need, but we were working on a short window with limitations no doubt put in place because of the deal between Everton and Leicester. I fully expect us to address any glaring holes that develop throughout the first half of the season in January. I have faith that the club will do its best to address those needs without compromising itself financially. Splashing the cash doesn't guarantee us points.

I suppose I'm in the minority, but securing financial stability for the future in an unstable economic environment sounds good to me. And, I would rather see the squad developed rather than revolutionized. By that, I mean change should take place gradually, as the club assesses and seeks to address the squad's weaknesses and build on its strengths.

This requires a few things, none of which can occur overnight. First, Walsh and Koeman need to develop a relationship that allows effective communication from Koeman about what's lacking in the squad when it comes to the type of game he wants to play. This depends upon Koeman getting time to impress his style on the squad, find out who is capable of playing within it, and figure out the tweaks he desires. Walsh will then need to do his best to understand what Koeman is looking for, locate and scout possible players and then sell them to the boss (this is a relationship that will have to grow over time). Then, there's the matter of negotiating deals, not being held to ransom and lining up backup options when the players Walsh/Koeman want are found to be too difficult to attain. All of this is important to make sure that every £ the club spends is to its benefit. This means avoiding the "we bought a class player but they're a square peg in a round hole" money-sucking phenomenon and making sure we don't fall into bringing in players who are a bad fit not just tactically but professionally as well. It's not sexy, but it's stable and effective. I know we feel like we need instant gratification, but I'd rather work with the understanding that we are building for a stable future where we look to improve bit by bit every season without mortgaging our future on a whim.

You cant say you are picking players on form when the like of Kane and Walcott are selected... A scarecrow would have been more use to Spurs that Kane so far this season and Walcott hasnt been in form for over 5 years!

Which was their tactic - pick on the youngster using one of their bigger, better players who was basically in Holgates pocket the whole game. I think just knowing he has Jags having his back was enough to add an extra fearlessness to his approach. I know you don't rate him, Pete, but his role is more than just being a defender and now that he's got a solid partner, he can do more of the mentoring and captaining that he's been criticised for not doing enough of in recent years.

Makes me laugh though, people were shouting for 'name' signings and Hart is one of the most recognisable in the world (whether you want to accept that or not) and people are turning their nose up at him.

He's also nowhere near as bad as some make out. Coupled with the fact the £7m "loan fee" is actually just his wages, not in addition to. I'd also like to point out....the dropping of 'interest' is definitely a ploy.

He's stalled for the last couple of seasons for me. Made some right boo-boo's. Possibly has become complacent, too comfortable.

I still rate him as a keeper though and would take him here in a Hart beat. Great personality, vocal, and rate him or not, he's a 'name'.

The hope for me would be that a new challenge gets him going again.

Bit of a silly question really.
If your suggesting he needs to act differently in front if the cameras...then maybe I misjudged him.

Er no, you compared your manager and your situation to him and getting asked questions by the press. It's not comparable.

There was fuck all wrong with what he said. It's not like he came out and said Oumar Niasse is the worst player he had ever seen and he's not sure how he makes a living as a footballer. He said his future isn't at Everton. Nothing disrespectful. Nothing hurtful. Just the truth and put in a direct but decent way.

I know what you mean but there are a lot of changes in personnel already and I think a degree of continuity is important. If we get Kone then I can only see Jags getting 15-20 games and maybe leaving at the end of this season. But for now, he has a role to play - on and off the pitch.

I don't understand what I've just been reading.

I think it's going to be a case of those who feel unsure about Koeman will look for anything slightly negative to ping him in the forehead with.

Personally, I read the comment and thought 'yeah, that's obvious'. I didn't read anything else into it.

Christ almighty, the over-reactions in here are bizarre, you'd think Koeman had said "He hasn't been given a squad number because I don't want that shower of shit anywhere near the stadium, lest the aura of absolute footballing wankness that he exudes infects the players. Fuck him and every single one of his relatives. Next question..."

He was asked a question, he answered it plainly and succinctly, without any bullshit. For Christ's sake Niasse has come from a league where he was making comparatively little money and in half a year he's been made a millionaire several times over by Everton for doing almost nothing. His signing on fee alone will have been more than most of us will make in our entire lifetimes. And yet some of you now are feeling sorry for him because Koeman didn't pussyfoot around with words? You're worried the 'spirit of Everton' is being lost because a manager spoke plainly? You're worried he might have 'upset Niasse's friends in the squad'? Nonsense. What would upset me if I were a hard working player would be the Martinez approach, of molly-coddling people who aren't pulling their weight (while publicly chastising someone like Baines for having the balls to speak his mind).

Koeman was not classless and he was not cold, he was merely behaving like a proper manager. In any walk of life, in any successful business, that style works. You want 'nice kind Everton', fine, but then don't complain when we win fuck all for 21 years.
