Newty82 got a reaction from StevO in Currently the most hated team in the media's eyes?
We are not the most hated club in the media just now. We are the favourites. We have given them plenty of page coverage. Which is great...because now every fucker around the world is reading about us on a daily basis and will be keeping an eye on us. Those not in the know, will become a bit inquisitive. Happy days.

BarnsleyFan, I think I kind of defended you the other night on another thread. Shame on me. Because today, you're being an arse. I can understand why. And let's not pretend it's because you have some deep lying affection for Stones and you're really passionate about his career progression. You, like any fan, want the best for your club. And the best for your club is....a nice £6 million sell on fee. Let's be honest, that's what's your really bothered about. From what I seen the other night, you and your club have plenty to look forward if you can keep hold of those youngsters (sounds familiar, doesn't it?!). So let me ask, what would you prefer...keep those young players and progress as a club to the next level or keep selling them, inflate the bank balance, but stay stuck where you are?

Let's get something else right too. In no way at all are we hypocrites. To be comparing our signing of Stones to Chelsea's chasing of Stones is so far wide of the mark. When we signed Stones from you...we were one of several clubs chasing him. We didn't speak about him in press conferences, we didn't spin stories, we didn't at all unsettle the player. We paid a more than fair fee and included a more than fair sell on fee. This is a stark comparison to how Chelsea and Jose have conducted 'business' in recent months. Everton have not done any harm to Stones. Chelsea, Jose, his agent and the media have. John Stones is in a brilliant close knit dressing room. With a manager who clearly genuinely cares and admires the lad, and will do all he can to look after him and progress him. There are many things wrong with Everton FC, but one thing I am really proud about is how we go about our transfer dealings. And how we look after our players.

That's the present. What about the future. One of the reasons I believe Martinez was so pissed off at half time at Barnsley is that I think he is placing a huge emphasis on winning silverware ASAP in order to keep this squad together. He knows, as we do, that if we don't deliver cups and European football, then he can't hope to keep this lot together. He's put a lot of pressure on himself, and I think it will bring the best out of him. However, I'm not sure we can turn it around quick enough to keep Stones. If he is deserving of it, he will move onto a richer club like Chelsea. Historically, we can offer more. But what we did 30 years ago is no good to a player who has a short career at the very top to win and achieve as much as possible. If we can't get up there, then no doubt he will move. At a higher value.

People who shout shit and boo are pure cretins who know fuck all about the morals of life.

At the end of the day, it's one player with one chance. We won't forever say no, just this time, for this year. Our clubs will be around for a lot longer than these players. What matters more?

Firstly, massive shout to Barnsley. Very impressed with their style of play. Also, they are the youngest team in the league? And cost all of £500k to put together? Good luck with the rest of the season.

Then us. Fuck me. Both defensively and in attack some of our decision making and communication is abysmal. We made it extra hard for ourselves tonight.

One of the pluses is that some 'fringe' players, or players who are returning from lay offs, got some real intense game time that hopefully will benefit us.

Some indifferent performances out there tonight.

Breath a sigh of relief and move on.

Roberto just emphasising in his post match interview that Stones is not at all for sale and that in football money cannot buy you everything and you have to have a set of values.

    Loved that.

Not sure of this stuff aimed at 'BarnsleyFan'. Seems a bit OTT.

Having pops at the lad for his club being in League 1 and being bitter...then having pops at Chelsea for being plastic, buying success, having no history etc. Who sounds bitter?

If Stones goes, it will be gutting. As gutting as it was for Barnsley fans when he left them. Stones made a natural progression from them to us. He MIGHT now make another natural progression.

I really really really wish football business was different. I really really really wish that we could hold onto these obvious young talents and head into the top 4 causing a footballing revolution and proving that it can be done. But money talks. And we don't have any. Our players know that and our fans know that (read the board thread...but somehow we still act shocked when this happens!). So given the chance, players will make that jump if given the chance to. It's fuckin annoying as a fan, but it's also 'real life'.

IF he has handed in a request, let him go and get every last penny we can get.

IF he does go. Wish him well and thank him for being a good player for this club.

IF it all goes through, and you ever see his agent, Jose or any of these rag journalists in the street...Rip their bollocks right off and stamp on them.

    That's all.

There's no way of knowing how he will react, play etc. if we tell him to stay put.

My personal feeling is to get rid of players who put in requests. I don't know Stones, so maybe he would be ok with being told to wait another year?

But we'll see...whatever is best for the club.

I fully agree with his and the club's approach.

We show respect to the player and his club. We also go about our business this way so that no one else gets alerted to the availability of a potential target.

It's frustrating for fans because we want to know everything! But that's not realistic.

I'm sure the same old same will continue to say the same old same. Carry on.

For me, City look immense. The balance in that team, both at the back and in attack, is absolutely on point. If they can keep this team fit, they'll be the team to watch this season. The organisation at the back is bang on. They defended in solid lines and we couldn't get through. Going forward, their pace, movement and decisiveness will cause most teams a problem.

I think we gave it a real go. But anyone to beat them this season will also need to be perfectly balanced in all areas. We are not that at the moment. Left back was a problem. As was the wings.

Both goals were shite and were a downer on an otherwise decent effort. I don't think anybody played particularly poor. We certainly looked tired as the game wore on. Not surprising really as that lot are non stop.

I was a bit bemused with Naismith coming on. I think we needed some natural width. The only thing I can think is that bringing Gerry or Kev on would cost us defensively were as Naismith, while not as talented, will run and harass all over the park.

Think Barkley had a bit of a frustrating game. He needs to learn that opposition teams will try to crowd him out, so to buy some space he needs to release the ball earlier either through a shot or a quick pass. At the moment he seems to run into the opposition and run out of space.

Overall, can't be too harsh on the team. But I dont think that was us on full song.

The truth is out there! Haha!

We need to stop hoping for a Russian or Arab. It's not gonna happen for us or any other team. It's happened twice in England. That's all.

All the others aren't worth talking about. Villa with Lerner...great, they currently have £100+ mill debt. For what?

There seems an illusion out there that these guys come in and just give their hard earned money to a football club that they previously had naff all interest in. They don't. Are we really that daft that we believe these people work their arses off, build up a fortune, then just give it away?!!! With Villa, Liverpool, Stoke etc all monies are secured against assets, be it the stadium, training ground, land. Whatever bricks and mortar has a value. These guys are savvy business men who's only aim is to grow their wealth. Not give it away. They know that land etc will continue to increase in value. They know that even if the 'xxxx Football Club Limited' was to run into financial difficulty, that their money is safe because that massive bit of land is signed over to 'My Financial Security Limited'. It's exactly the same as when all these investment firms bought into these retailers over the last 10 years...then the retailers went 'bankrupt' but the investment firm made a profit?!!! Again, excuse my terminology...I'm a bit rusty with it! But I'm sure you know what I mean.

With us it was maybe a bit different, Kenwright had nowhere near enough personal money to put in and secure against assets, so the assets had to be sold to keep cash flowing.

I just want to make clear I'm not out and out defending Kenwright and Co. But I do feel that airplane banners after one game of the new season is to much.

Thing is though, this historical big club stuff doesn't cut it anymore. Not in this modern cut throat commercialised football world.

It's been 30 years since we had some sort of successful cup and league winning era. Since then, we've seen a number of clubs win many cups and either overtake us or stride further in front.

We were probably the first club to enjoy the delights of a wealthy businessman willing to personally back a football club (maybe not directly with his own money but certainly to act as security to secure top players and pay top wages). Unfortunately, I also think we are the first club to see the aftermath of when such individuals can longer carry on. Maybe it's just bad luck that Heysel happened just as Sir Jon was falling into ill health and was no longer able to oversee things so acutely. But then do we blame the late Sir Phillip Carter? After all, it's the same situation. He took on the chairmanship without any personal wealth to put in and the club quickly started to sink into the 90's. Not a chance.

We use the selling of assets as a beating stick these days. But I guess if we didn't sell bricks and mortar assets to keep cash flow going, then we'd have to sell our next best assets...players. Where would that have left the club?

Oh man, I'm knackered now. I think I might have lost the point I wanted to make somewhere...eyes are too tired to tell me!!! Maybe I'll try again tomorrow...but in a nutshell, I find it hard to blame it all on one man.

For our American friends looking at UK accounts (in case you haven't caught on yet, you probably have!!!)...All UK Limited companies are obliged to submit an annual accounting document for anyone to see (usually costs about a quid to download). But the detail doesn't have to be 'itemised', it's just a basic summary document. I'm no expert so excuse my terminology etc. I guess only the taxman and accounting firm will get the real deep diving info on all costs etc.

With regards to Peter Johnson. I'm not sure if Haf or anyone is defending or what, but this bloke turned into a 4 year nightmare. Under his stewardship, we had many poor commercial deals, broken promises, dodgy goings on etc that put the club on its knees. The Rothschild report for the sale of the club back in 1999 proves as much. He almost bankrupt the club. The debts (for that era) were huge. The club was losing money every year. We were a farce. We had to sell players quickly, reduce wages quickly and increase ticket prices quickly just to survive.

    Every fan wanted him gone.

I'm sure most fans were over the moon for Kenwright to do all he could to get in. But it was clear from day one that he couldn't personally bankroll the club.

Unfortunately, with him not having any serious personal coin to throw our way, we've seen a number of short term deals being pulled off to keep cash flow going. Such as undervalued (in our one way minds) sponsorships and certain services being given to 3rd parties.

I'm not wanting to defend Kenwright because there has been some dross, but I also think that there is a lot of over the top bully boy type shite getting thrown his way. I think at times he can't do right no matter what.

We've been sinking since the late Sir Jon Moores demise. That was in the 80's. 30 years ago now.

As fans, we seem to be stuck in 2 minds. One...we feel we are a big club who should be able to attract these mega investors, get top notch sponsorship deals etc. But then when it comes transfers, we act differently...we talk of 'big' clubs taking our players, better players choosing 'big' clubs over us.
