Decent read, not sure if I agree with the comparison to the NY Mets; someone here on this forum made a better analogy with the Oakland A's; Everton find young talent, or take old talent and make it better, then sell off the talent. But analogies are American sports writer's favorite "go-to" heuristic device when writing about soccer...they sound clever at first but are generally useless.

The comment section on that thread is atrocious.

This is terrific. Kinda like the joke, "what's the difference between Jam and Jelly?"

The fluter of course; unless the pigsbladder has been inadvertently touched by the point-calapcinator while out of play; in which case the match is abandoned because it will plainly end in stalemate and much death if continued.

    Doh .

Never been much of a car guy, so I'd opt for something sporty yet practical like this (though not in white). Nothing to flashy for me, as I'd only feel self-conscious driving around something like a Ferrari.

However, I do ride a pretty flashy bike around my university. It always turns heads.

Yeah agreed, hope the away black has more to it. But I am also in the very small minority that think black w/pink accents is pretty cool. And I also love the black socks so I'm certain to be shunned for that as well.

Don't really understand the description of Ruby Red...perhaps after about 9 pints it will look that way under certain bar lights.

Beer prices vary quite a bit by city/region here in the US, as you might imagine. In big cities, NYC, Washington, you'll probably pay anywhere from 5-7 dollars per pint. But you get out to rural regions, like where I live, and you can pay 3-5, maybe less depending on the brand. There was a bar in my town here where you could get a pint for 0.75 dollars (it was cheap swill--"Natural Light").

verreauxi reacted to AlbanyNYToffee in Summer Transfer Window
Alot has been written about targets and lack of signings etc. which I understand as a fan but at the end of the day I always go back to one thing. Roberto Martinez is our manager. I have the utmost faith in him to produce a successful transfer window, whether that happens July 14th or August 31st I don't particularly care. He refuses to overpay and I admire that about him. Here's a glimpse at his Wigan transfer history that will hopefully calm some folks down:

In a four year period he made the following signings:
    09/10: Diame, McCarthy (1m rising to 5m), V Moses 2.5m, J Gomez 1.7m he also sold cattermole for 6m and l.a. valencia for 16m
    10/11: DiSanto 2m, J McArthur, Boselli 6.5m, Alcaraz Free
11/12: Al Habsi 4m, Maloney 1m, Beausejour 3m he also sold nzogbia for 9.5m
    12/13: I Ramis 5m, A Kone 2.7m, Espinoza free he also sold v moses for 9m

Last year he bought McCarthy for 13m and most went crazy. By December that looked like an invaluable addition at a great price.

Boselli is the only huge miss, which for a club like wigan is a big statement. I realize those players are not great players but they kept wigan in the premier league for 3-4 more years than they should have been. Others can/will have their doubts but until Roberto's track record changes significantly I will back every signing wholeheartedly and I will be patient if he waits until deadline day.

Whoa!!! I was logging on fully thinking that MikeO had me beat at the line. Didn't expect a tie. Yes, when I'm in Liverpool we'll do a shoot out.

Many thanks Steve, it was a fun contest that you organized!!

In the remote Island of Pachingo, in the southwest corner of the Pacific, the locals play a game called "muhwah'~n'ee-ong." Here is the scenario: The fluter, who is part of the home team wrestles the pigbladder from the lackey. But meanwhile on the sidelines, the corner umpire has just noticed that the visiting team has orange head-dresses, when the rules clearly state that during a waxing moon, head-dresses must be white-tipped. The corner umpire is about to blow the conch shell but at that moment the lackey has stuffed the pigbladder in the pen, shutting out all calapcinators from approaching the octogon. How does the senior umpire handle this situation?

    i) Dismiss the point-calapcinator, deflate the pigbladder, and start the match anew on the next lunar month.
ii) Fashion a mogwai shed out of Pandan leaves and allow the visiting team to consult their spirit-coaches for a minimum of two days
iii) Restart the match on the brushy hillocks, but allow desicated goats bollocks to be substituted for the pigbladder.
iv) Wait for western colonization, assimilation, and the arrival of television, Doritos, and post-modern ennui.

All my degrees are in Anthropology, but mostly focusing on the biological side of anthropology. Hence I teach courses on things like "human evolution" "anthropological genetics" "evolutionary psychology" "primate behavioral ecology" and other stuff having to do with the biology of humans and nonhuman primates.

My primary research is studying lemur behavior, genetics, and conservation biology. Sifaka, pictured on my arm and my avatar photo, are the creatures that I study.

Anyways, I appreciate the follow up comments. I just didn't want to come off as one of those pretentious academic types (perhaps I still do ).

Now back to the World cup!

Hmmm? Strategy says I should just pick what MikeO picks and I'll win

    But that would be unsporting.

    I'll go with

    Brazil (0) 1 Netherlands (2) 3
    Germany (1) 2 Argentina (0) 0

If you have tattoos that mark milestones and/or are personal then once you arrive at a design you love, it doesn't matter if tattoos are trendy or if everyone has one. If you look at your tattoos and they make you smile everyday, then they are yours forever.

I have a tattoo for every degree that I have (geeky, nerdy, yes, but it was always my plan). I have a DNA molecule that wraps around my biceps (marking my undergrad degree), and I have a cotton-top tamarin on my forearm marking my master's degree, and I have a sifaka (lemur) on the other forearm that marks the completion of my Ph.D. (this latter tattoo was actually bought as a gift for me by my advisor). I love them!!
