Predict the result: World Cup edition

Thanks to the World Cup, you get another chance to prove your ability (or lack thereof) to predict football scores. This time around, though, there's not a week between games, so you'll have to submit your predictions not just ahead of each game but before the start of each round. To help, I'll list all the games in the upcoming round, and you can simply enter your predicted scores.

 

You get to predict the score both at half-time and at full-time, with your predictions for half-time in parentheses. For example, you might predict that Italy will lead England at half-time by 2 goals to 1, but that England will fight back to win the game 3-2. In this case, your predictions will appear as England 3(1) Italy 2(2). Does this make sense?

 

Here's how the scoring will work:

 

- One point for predicting the correct outcome (win, lose, or draw) at half-time

- One point for predicting the correct outcome (win, lose, or draw) at full-time

- One point for predicting the correct number of goals for team 1 at full-time

- One point for predicting the correct number of goals for team 2 at full-time

- One point for predicting the correct goal difference at full-time

 

The mathematically astute will realize right away that, in effect, you get a bonus point for predicting the exact full-time score.

 

I'll announce a predictions winner for each round and also an overall winner for the tournament.

 

Note that, in the knock-out rounds, the only two outcomes are win or lose - although you will be able to predict a win on penalties. Rather than complicate things too early, I'll explain the rules for those rounds later. For now, we'll focus on the first three rounds.

You get a budget and you have to try and get most points. Explained here. Essentially you have to pick the teams with lower points but are likely to top the group. Would possibly have to update ranking points (post is from December), but still.

 

Remember too that Brazil and Mexico play their second game before Russia play Korea Rep in those teams' first game, so you'll have to start second round selections before the first round is over.

It's not predict the result but it is a prediction - had a go on a work sweep - guess the number of goals scored in the World Cup. 64 games, penalties scored from 4 possible penalty shootouts count. I've gone for 161

I noticed that mate but didn't bother editing as my 'Xs' were for teams I predicted to score no goals in the game anyway - so they'd have 0 at HT and FT.

 

It might also be misleading to post more goals being scored in the second half of games due to the conditions in certain parts of the country. Many of my predictions have goals coming in the second half of games, but fuck it, I cba altering now.
