I think he has shown flashes of being pretty good in all MF positions. Well rounded? Ok at all, good at none? I'm not sure, but I would think some stability at manager, as well as playing a single role for an extended run would help him a lot - as would having the same players around him in well defined roles. Our MF was different formations and different players seemingly game to game last year, grasping for something that worked. Not a single MF played consistently well last year - maybe be Gana due to work rate, but otherwise, it was a revolving door of players and tactics.  
His biggest for me isn'tt his skill on the ball or in tackles - but his willingness to attack, take players on as well as fly into tackles. It's hard/impossible to teach that in any sport - a player is aggressive/unafraid or they are not. He isn'tt intimidated by driving at a Yaya, or taking the ball off a Costa - grown ass men.
He needs polish, lots of it,. That can come from good coaching and experience. Lets not forget his Mum was driving him to training  every day from home this time last year.

I never get this local lad argument. If anything, local lads are judged much more harshly than any other non local players.
For example Davies has been rated as a better proposition by the last 3 managers than Besic or Klaasen yet some would rather they are both in the team ahead of him. 
I think Davies is an intelligent footballer. He shows great awareness of space both offensively and defensively (the latter being very underappreciated). Technically I am not sure where we stand with him because he was much better last season than this, which makes me think that there has been a psychological/confidence issues holding him back given the management situations rather than him not being good enough.
I think he could potentially learn loads under Silva. Tactically he will improve further and in the right set up, he could really flourish. I cant say that of Gueye, Besic or Schneiderlin. Klaassen maybe. 
Either way it will be a big season for him. If he steps up then great but if he doesnt then we will still be able to move him on for a decent sum.

Davies is 19 years old with barely 2 seasons under his belt... bit of perspective required here.

Taking out Rooney, we still have Vlasic, Dowell, Lookman, Sandro and Klaassen who can play in that position. Lookman is probably more of a wide man, Sandro I'm not entirely sure, Klaassen if he ever makes it may be able to play deeper but will probably be the most forward midfielder (like Cleverly was for Watford).
I think he Maddison looks a very bright talent but then so does Dowell. He looks like the type of player I would love us to go for but because of the fuck ups of the last two years, unless we clear out some of those players above, I would worry that he wouldn't play very often and then its a waste of talent.
Maybe we could buy him and loan him back to Norwich but like you say in your second paragraph, we have bigger holes to plug first.

We've made some awful managerial decisions recently. To put things in perspective, the annual salary of both Koeman and Allardyce at Everton was 30% more than Zidane made this year at Real Madrid. That's borderline criminal.

Guys in the lineup 21 or younger from Everton, PSG, Man City, Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund - Makes me hopeful with these young talents - even if they don't end up at that level and fall to lower level Ligue 1, PL, Bundesliga teams, it'll be a step up on a lot of the MLS guys we've been fielding.

Love the fact that Lookman finished second only to Robert Lewandowski in goals to minutes in the Bundesliga!

Gana is a DM who specialises in hunting the ball and pressing the opposition. I could worry about his passing if his pass completion was 60% like lukakus but it isnt.... it's always one of the highest. Just like his work rate, tackles and interceptions. 
When he becomes one of the worst 3 players in the team I will worry about him.  He's nowhere near that so please feel free to direct yourself to the Keane, Williams, bollassie, schneiderlein, Rooney, threads

Also think a little credit has to goto villa/Steve Bruce.  Watched a little bit of both legs and it seems like they got their tactics right.  Just tried to stop Boro's gameplan / players and then nicked it with 1 goal in the first leg. Pulis isn'tt known for his attacking play or having a plan b - z.

I am not sure on Davy Klaassen. Know a lot of fans are behind him.  Personally, I have not been impressed when he has been on the pitch in the few opportunities that he has been given.  In the u23 match he played back in March in the build up to him returning to the squad, he was not the stand out player on the pitch.  Unsure if we should sell him but also unsure if the first team should be the proving ground for him either.
Hopefully the new manager will get it sorted well before the transfer window closes.  Davy won't be at the WC so hopefully he will be one of the first in the door during pre season.

Just think what this season would have been like if we hadn't bought Keane? Used that money on someone else?  Just look how Maguire has gotten on after leaving Hull for Leicester. Keane's transfer fee was double Maguire's.
Heck the team that Keane left finished above us. Burnley bought him for 2.5 mil.
