You really do talk shite at times

Granted he was poor in the first half, as was the entire Everton team, but he had a very good second half and if you honestly think that was one of the worst performances of a striker in a blue shirt then there really isn't any hope for you

Figments of your imagination. Or he doesn't actually mean to assist; they're actually mistakes due to his poor touch.

So just which Everton striker past or present played/plays better when up against ' better defenders' !

We've just seen us beat Chelsea, Naismith takes all the goal scoring plaudits, rightly so, the whole team played well, Roms has played better than he did Saurday, so has Kone, McCarthy and a couple of others, but hey!.......we won.

Guess it was a perfect Saturday for you........a great result and Lukaku miss controls a few times and doesn't get on the scoresheet, doesn't get better than that.

Take your blinkers off ! Every single Everton player is capable of having a bad game. There certainly weren't any on Saturday.

Why can't we give Lukaku a rest until he has a poor game.

I'll be honest; my heart sunk when the starting line-up was announced. It looked as if Martinez was playing for us to just nick a win if we could, a la Moyes. My heart sunk even further when Besic had to go off and Naismith came on. Not because I don't like Naismith, but because I thought it was an opportunity wasted to get a pacy, attacking player on that could have got at Chelsea. Happily I needn't have worried about the starting line-up or the early substitution, whether through luck or design both things worked out perfectly!

For the majority of the first half I thought we were brilliant and very well organised. Chelsea had a lot of the ball but we stood firm in front of them stopped them getting too close to our goal. We were happy to let them have time and space in front of us which I don't like because it's terrible on my nerves, but it was obviously part of the game plan and it worked brilliantly. As soon as they got too close for comfort they were swarmed and more often than not we won the ball back comfortably. Then we kept and used the ball well pretty much every time; we may not have had a shit load of the ball but when we did have it we were extremely economical with it. Just look at the second goal we scored - we won the ball back and then were devastating with it. Kone and Lukaku linked up well down the right, gave it to Barkley who shifted it on to Naismith and then bang. And our first goal was a perfect illustration of our patience - 19 passes in all were involved. It was beautifully worked but hasn't had the credit it deserves in the media. Man City do that and you'd have had people analysing it to death. The spell where we grabbed those two quick goals was brilliant to watch and we could and probably should have even extended our advantage. We had a couple of chances after our opener and then after the second also. We let ourselves down for their goal though. We failed to stop Matic when he got too close; Barkley was badly at fault there. It was a great shot though, Howard had no chance with it. We got very nervous after that (so do I!) and Chelsea were really on top of us and looking very dangerous. Fortunately half time saved us. So it was a half of joy and terror.

I don't think we were as good in terms of attacking in the second half or at keeping the ball well. I was tearing my hair out at how bad our ball retention was; we were very, very sloppy in possession. But what a defensive display it was. Barry was an outstanding shield in front of the defence. The discipline he showed was outstanding. He barely moved from his spot in front of the defence all half. He mopped up so much danger it was unbelievable. He just knew where to be every time. And while others were crap in the way they used the ball, he was exceptional. It was the perfect defensive midfield performance. While McCarthy wasn't quite as disciplined (he did go walkabout a bit) his energy and tenacity was vital for us. Then if Chelsea got past that wall they had Jagielka, Stones, Galloway and to a lesser extent Coleman throwing themselves in front of everything that Chelsea could muster. It all meant that while Chelsea dominated the ball and looked like they could get right back in the game, and possibly get a win, they actually barely got near testing Howard. Fortunately we soaked up all that pressure and managed to finish them off when we got away from our own penalty area, Barkley showed brilliant composure to play the disguised pass to slip Naismith in one on one with Begovic and... what a cool finish to complete his hat-trick. He could have quite easily bottled it but he made it look like he was on the training pitch.

That's another three points we're up on last season. Onwards and upwards, blues.

Howard - Nothing he could do about their goal and wasn't really tested at any point.

Coleman - A much better attacking display from him. He's still a bit too reluctant for my liking, but he showed more positivity when in possession and I loved seeing him skipping past Chelsea players and coming inside with a driving run. In a counter-attacking game plan he's a key cog because of doing those things. He wasn't as important or as involved in the defensive work we had to do yesterday but he was heavily involved when we needed to get the ball away from our box and put the pressure back on Chelsea.

Stones - What a mature performance he put in. Lesser player would've gone to bits to yesterday because of all the other shit came with the game. Not John though. He looked like he didn't have a care in the world and just went out there and played his normal game. At times he over played (but that's nothing new), but for the majority of the game he was absolutely sublime and unflustered. He had Pedro in his pocket, and dealt with the knob head Costa like he was swatting an annoying fly. I thought he also showed a lot more grit than he usually do; throwing his body in front of balls etc.

Jagielka - He dealt with Costa excellently as well. He looked like he had the attitude of "who the fuck are you?". Costa was made to be nothing more than a nuisance, any threat he could have brought was totally nullified and dealt with with a measure of disdain.

Galloway - I was a bit worried for him because it became apparent straight away he was going to get no help with defending from Kone, and I thought he'd be lucky to come out of the game unscathed. But, fair play to the lad, he just accepted his lot and got better and better as the game went on. You wouldn't have been able to tell he's only played a handful of games at PL level, and not in his natural position either. Hazard went at him one on one and Galloway came out the winner more often than not. He didn't panic whatsoever. No mean feat! And his attacking play looked a lot better too - the cross for Naismith's opener was lovely. We look like we've got quite the talent on our hands.

Naismith - What a game from the little man. Called upon right at the start of the game and could have been forgiven for looking a bit rusty and needing a bit of time to get up to speed, but nothing like that. He slotted in seamlessly and didn't take long to make an impact at all. He made space for himself in the middle of the park to receive the ball, quickly passed it off to Galloway and instead of admiring his good work he was off to make sure he was on the end of the ball into the box. It was a brave header too because Begovic came very close to taking the wee man out! There was very little time to breathe before the blonde bombshell was making it 2-0. We've been crying out for more shots from outside the area and he didn't hesitate when Barkley played the ball to him just outside the box for him to finish superbly. He does love scoring against the top sides doesn't he? While it was a long time between his second and third goals that's not to say he was any less important or influential. He was always pestering the Chelsea players when they were in possession, and I also thought his own possession work was probably as good as I've ever seen it for us. He was constantly finding little pockets of space to receive the ball and take the pressure off us, and he used the ball well when he did receive it. And his third goal was just ice cool and probably my favourite of his three. My MOTM.

McCarthy - I don't think he quite returned to the level we know he can get to, but it's got to have been his best game for us this season so far. He lacked discipline at times by leaving his spot but as I said earlier his energy and tenacity when we didn't have the ball (particularly in the second half) played a big role in us achieving the victory. It was also nice to see him shoot from range in the first half too, that would have been a great goal for him.

Barry - It's almost unfortunate that Naismith got a hat-trick because if we'd spread our goals around Barry would've, hands down, been my MOTM. He played like the Barry of his loan season yesterday. I can't fault him to be honest. The amount of times he positioned himself perfectly to stop Chelsea was unreal. Time after time the ball would just end up at his feet. He also played a bit of a Pienaar role for us by winning pressure-relieving free-kicks when we were under the cosh. It also didn't go unnoticed by me how many times he received the ball under pressure, turned neatly out of danger and played us away from our own penalty area. Quality showing from him.

Kone - While I thought he was extremely poor in his defensive showing from open play it cannot be underestimated just how important he was in defending from set-pieces. His head must have been aching due to the amount of clearing headers he made from Chelsea corners and free-kicks. He was a one man heading machine. His link-up play, as usual, was really good too. It was nice seeing this at work in the build up for our second goal. He tired during the second half but it was expected because he did put a good shift in.

Barkley - Another promising showing from him, with a smattering of frustrating things too. The good far outweighed the bad though; the good can be frightening while the bad that he displayed can most definitely be cut out quite easily. He grabbed two assists - the second being a thing of beauty; just perfection to be honest. His strength at times yesterday was unbelievable - players bigger and stronger than him could not push him off the ball. His driving runs had me on the edge of my seat. He was always looking to be involved in the play. But, and there's likely to be a but with him for a good few years yet, he frustrated me. Sometimes he wanted to take two extra touches that just weren't needed and would get caught in possession in a stupid area. Or he'd fail to get his head up and assess what his options were, or just choose the wrong option completely, and he'd often run into dead ends. But, like I said, the negatives of his game can easily be eradicated so I'm not going to dwell on them.

Lukaku - I thought he put in a good showing myself. He used his strength well yesterday and linked-up well with those around him. Just look at our second goal - he held off his man, turned him and then passed the ball on to Kone. He also won a fair few aerial balls, which isn't something to be sniffed at when winning those types of battles isn't a strong point of his and he was up against Terry and Zouma. The only negative aspect of his game for me was that I just thought he was too eager to try and prove a point to Mourinho and was trying too hard (much like Rooney does against us) and that worked against him. You give him those chances on goal against any other side and he puts at least one of them in the back of the net I reckon.

I must have slipped into the twilight zone. Lukaku had a bad game? He didn't have as good a game as the likes of Stones, Naismith, Barry etc but a bad game? No. He had a good game. He won aerial balls, he held the ball up well, he linked up play well also. All things that it's said he's bad at.

I didn't see a player that had the ball taken from due to a bad first touch at all. I saw a player that was desperate to prove something against his old club and probably tried too hard to do that, so instead of passing to a team mate who was in a better position when he had the ball he'd run with it and THEN be dispossessed. Nothing to do with his first touch.

Put it this way: I had much more cause to grumble at things Barkley, Kone and McCarthy did than Lukaku.

Mid-week extra time, and a Spurs team at home desperate for their first win, we didn't play well but got a point ! Result ?

Out of Watford, Southampton, City and Spurs, Southampton have been the poorest opponents, some on here got carried away because we looked good against them.

Palace won at Chelsea and west ham won at liverpool, anyone think a point away at Palace would be a poor result, every game is going to be a battle, teams are all pretty even, can't help feeling the manager and his tactics are the more important than a few highly paid big name players.liverpool and Chelsea had the high priced stars and managers, palace and hammers got the points.

We've got some very good players, have we got a good manager.

I thought we started the game very well. We were supremely confident with the ball, pinging it about, and had good tempo. Spurs could barely get hold of the ball and whenever they did we quickly won the ball back. I was sat there thinking "we've got this, a win here is on the cards." But, I think it was around the 16 minute mark that I started to get worried. The same problem we had a lot of last season was clear - for all our good build up play, and possession, we were doing absolutely nothing with the ball that actually threatened Tottenham. Our best chance of the half actually came about due to a Spurs mistake. If Cleverley had managed to score the game might have been completely different - the crowd would have got on the Spurs' players backs and we could have taken advantage. It wasn't to be though and as Spurs realised we weren't much of a threat they came more and more into the game and took charge of the ball. They weren't great themselves but they were much more of a threat than we were.

The second half was pretty much all Spurs and it was clear quite early on that Martinez had settled for a point. They were all over us and we were happy to just defend and we'd try and nick the game if we could possibly get down the other end. Getting to the other end mainly involved hoofing the ball and hoping it'd stay up there. It didn't. Lukaku wasn't on his game and we gave him no support up there anyway. If not for Howard and some desperate defending in front of him we'd have been on the end of a 3 or 4 goal defeat easily.

I was pretty disappointed with the manager, game plan and the majority of the players. Apart from Howard and Kone the rest were average at best.

Howard - He is the reason we didn't get our arses handed to us on a plate. Crucial save after crucial save. Thank you, Tim. My MOTM.

Coleman - Average. Didn't do a lot wrong, didn't do a lot right either. He was just there.

Stones and Jagielka - Both of them were hit and miss. Made some crucial blocks between them, and then other times have their head in the clouds with their defending.

Oviedo - Started the game sluggishly but looked more with it and more confident as the game progressed.

Kone - The only outfield player who looked remotely good. He held the ball up superbly, linked-up really well, and used the ball well too. And he'd often get the ball and move forward with it. Went out of the game a bit after the challenge on him that jarred his knee but he came back well.

McCarthy - Pretty crap really. He was one that doesn't even get an average rating.

Barry - Better than McCarthy but went through a stage of looking like he wanted to hand Spurs the three points personally!

Cleverley - Looked good until his injury, and could have put us ahead when he was gifted an opportunity. I hope his injury doesn't keep him out for too long because he has slotted in seamlessly and has looked one of our best players.

Barkley - Didn't get up in support of Rom enough for me. Apart from that he was in and out of the game, did some good things and some rubbish too. I wanted to shake him toward the end of the game when we'd managed to win a free-kick deep in their half though. Geri was standing out wide all on his own begging for the ball and not once did Barkley even look that way, and then instead he put a shit ball in to the box and it came to nothing.

Rom - A bit of a no show from him really. I'm hoping that was more down to his exertions mid-week than a complete lack of effort.

He might want it Marco, but for him to do it, it will probably need Martinez. What I mean is he probably wanted it against Watford but how we played didn't best suit his style, even at home on the first day of the season the build up was slower, we passed it across the park too much, also Lukaku was again a lone striker, things improved when Kone came on.

If he gets more freedom (product of a partner), better service, whilst the team is more dangerous (product of faster more direct play), then, I think he could well be unplayable.

Get the crosses right (Kones was a beaut ), get the through balls right (the one for his second goal was excellent).

When suddenly opponents are on panic stations with a flying Lukaku, there's going to be more room for Kone, Barkley, Gerry, Mirallas etc......

Back to Martinez, he can't just get us charging at every team we play, sometimes playing across the pitch is the right move, but will will get more out of Lukaku and win more games playing like we did against Southampton than we did against Watford and how we played last season in games such as the home fixture with Hull etc.

I think it's what the fans have been saying for months.

I enjoyed this game for perhaps the first 10 minutes. We started positively and confidently. And i was sat there thinking maybe my worries and lack of enthusiasm for this season were misplaced. I was wrong, so very wrong! After those first 10 minutes I fluctuated between rage and frustration for the rest of the game. It was like I'd never had a break for the summer.

That first half performance was atrocious (other than the first 10 minutes). There was absolutely no difference to what we had to sit through last season. It was so painfully slow watching us move the ball about, going nowhere. Time after time Jagielka would get the ball and there'd be a pass on further up the field, he'd take another touch and then stop with the ball and either the pass would no longer be on or he'd turn away and go fucking sideways. Then when Jags did get a clue occasionally and give it to a midfielder they wouldn't bother turning with the ball, they'd just send it straight back where it came from! We also had next to nothing through the middle, no oomph there whatsoever. Not fucking surprising when we have two defensive midfielders players without a drop of creativity in them, so everything had to go out wide. But considering we only had one natural wide man and the other, Cleverley, looked like a lost kitten and way off the pace in the first half, and Galloway doesn't add anything attacking-wise, it left us utterly lopsided. So it would've perhaps made sense to only play with one of McCarthy or Barry. It obviously didn't make sense to our tactical genius of a manager though, and he hamstrung us all over the pitch instead. Then, as last season, our movement off the ball was embarrassing. It's hard to believe these are professional footballers who are paid tens of thousands of pounds. Time after time Stones got the ball and had to stop and just held us arms out to the side as if to say "who am I supposed to give the ball to?". When our players weren't standing within a foot of each other doing an impression of the Chuckle Brothers (to me, to you) they were making zero effort to make space for themselves to receive the ball and just standing still next to Watford players. What have we worked on over the summer? Because we looked totally devoid of a plan, no one knew what they were supposed to be doing. In the end it came as no surprise to me when Watford took the lead with what was probably their closest foray to our goal. But, we'd had most of the possession so Martinez wouldn't have been too unhappy. As was the case last season, we actually pushed forward after going behind. Hurrah. I didn't boo the players off at half-time like a lot of the ground did but I can understand why a large portion did.

Second half we came out and really put them under pressure. We were on the front foot right from the off and were all over them, creating chances, actually moving the ball forward with a good tempo. But we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net and I was starting to think it was just going to be one of those days. Fortunately Barkley decided to have a crack from outside the box and hit it so sweetly to get us back in the game. I thought that we'd carry on putting them under pressure and do everything possible to turn around a pretty dire position, but no, we did last season's trick of getting back in the game and then sitting right back. Watford came into the game again and duly went ahead again due to some pretty lacklustre defending (surprise, surprise!). Then, would you believe it, after going behind we decided to start playing positively again and having a go. You could not make this shit up! And again we equalised with a quite brilliant finish from Kone. Once again I thought we'd push for a late winner, but I was left disappointed as true to form we retreated again, seemed happy with a point and resorted to just hoofing the ball anywhere and Watford looked like the side who wanted to win it.

The only thing I can see that's changed from last season is that we look fitter. That's it. We still wouldn't know creativity if it danced naked in front of us. We still play with very little to no tempo. We still look porous defensively. Argh. This was me during the game

Howard - He really didn't have much to do apart from pick the ball out of his net twice.

Coleman - I thought he played like he was hungover in the first half and looked reluctant to even attempt to beat his man. He was one of the worst for just standing by a Watford player, making no attempt to get free.It didn't help that Mirallas gave him no protection when he was on that side (see Watford's first goal), and neither did a very out of sorts Cleverley when they swapped wings. He improved a lot in the second half and looked threatening. But the boy can't cross so it was a bit wasted.

Stones - Apart from the obvious I thought he had a solid game. He looked to bring the ball out of defence but often had absolutely nothing to hit.

Jagielka - I also thought he mostly had a solid game too. But he had this little spell in the second half where he seemed to completely lose his head and he turned into a schoolboy and fluffed everything.

Galloway - Decent enough but I pray that he's not our left back for the whole time Baines is out. He is every inch a CB playing at LB and offers absolutely nothing going forward. And we cannot afford that for the majority of the season. It's unthinkable.

Mirallas - I think The Echo have been overly harsh about his performance tbh (saying he was anonymous), particularly his first half showing. In that period I thought he was the only one of our players that thought it might be a good idea to actually attack the opposition and he had a go. Even in the second half he wasn't nowhere, and I can remember him running past two or three Watford players and getting a shot in which won us a corner. I wish he'd stay away from copyng Baines' floaty shit corners though, they're pointless.

McCarthy - Showed a great engine by running around a lot... it's just a shame he often ran AWAY from where he was supposed to be, leaving us woefully exposed.

Barry - I can't really say I noticed him, positive or negative, until he moved to defence, and then I thought he did a pretty solid job.

Cleverley - I can only assume he was put on the left to help Galloway out because he wouldn't attack, but he didn't help him because he was barely out there and just drifted inside, waaaaay inside. And then he was was swapped with Mirallas and went on the right and didn't help Coleman either. In fact, I can recall seeing him pop up on the left again with Mirallas! He just looked clueless as to what his role actually was in the first half. But, I thought he was very influential in the second half when we were pushing for a goal. Almost like Martinez had told him what his role should be. Heaven forbid .

Barkley - A fantastic finish for his goal, but he only showed glimpses of the player of two season ago. There were still too many occasions when he should be turning and being positive with the ball but instead he just lays the ball back to where it came from. He seemed to gain confidence as the game went on which is positive. But his lack of support for Lukaku was criminal; he just didn't get up alongside or anywhere near him often enough. That's his bloody role!

Lukaku - Isolated for much of the game until Kone came on. We did not support him adequately enough until the final part of the game and it showed. I thought he won as many, if not more headers, as I've seen him win yesterday, but due to that lack of support his flick-ons were rarely picked up by one of our players. And despite not scoring he did manage to pick up an assist. I don't think he had anywhere near as bad a game as some have made out on here, but I was infuriated by him constantly being offside. At one point he called for a pass even though at that very moment he was offside! I wanted to beat him to death with the the lineman's flag!

Kone - It's no secret that I don't rate him very highly at all but he had a really good cameo when he came on. When he missed that header I thought "here we go", but he didn't let that play on his mind and went on to play a pivotal role in our recovery and set up the equaliser for Barkley, and then finished coolly under pressure to get us our second equaliser. Well played, Arouna. It was also nice to see him work in tandem with Lukaku, with both of them benefiting by having the other alongside them.

I don't care about the personnel, that's not really the problem. It's the tactics and style of play. Too fucking slow. No one moving. No creativity. What the fuck did we work on over the summer? Fuck. All.

'What' the fuc% have we been doing on the training ground pre-season.We have no idea how to create chances.....against a team with six players on a debut.

On a plus point, some nice passing along the half way line.

He's like every other greedy footballer, I don't care if they play for Everton, they hold clubs to ransome with their ' not sure if I'm going to sign a new contract ' shit. They just want more money.

Jags has been an England regular and even when we sold Lescott to City the talk was they (City) had bought the wrong player.I don't know or care how much Jags is on or how much McCarthy was and now is getting, they are all greedy, it's a just a simple fact.

McCarthy got what he wanted, like most footballers, football is blighted, we can never change it now, my statement stands he still needs to prove his self, to me an over paid Jags has done that.

To me McCarthy is a slightly better than average midfielder, his agent has done a great job.I'll be looking for a more worthy player over the next few seasons.
