My bold shout of the season is that Coleman will be the best and most productive RB in the league.

    Had no idea.

In my defence (after Googling it) it happened on the first day of my holiday and given limited 'net access I was wasn't really searching for Norwich/Wigan stories .

1 goal scored, a good one denied, a penno not given against a team full of rich talent.... i'm liking what I am seeing.

For me it's not the result, its the manner of the result. We had a good go at them. For me conceding goals is a part of football, try to minimise the amount you concede and maximise the opportunities to score.

Under Moyes would we have conceded less? I don't think necessarily so, but we would have been set up to contain them rather than trouble them. For me that approach has not done us any favours in the past against pure footballing teams (Arsenal hidings etc).

This isn't Moyes versus Martinez, this for me is the realisation that we do not need to be a pragmatic "try and score and hold on" team. We have talent within our team to trouble any side in the world, changing our midset from "if we don't concede we stand a chance of winning" to "if we score we have a chance of winning" means we will cause the opposition concern.

I know one thing from what I have seen, we aren't going to have bored fans at goodison. I know several people who packed in their season tickets over the past couple of years, big Evertonians. The reason wasnt that they don't love the club, it was just purely the fact that they couldn't stomach any more negativite tactics. Based on average attendances etc, they weren't the only ones. Its all about value. I know fans who turned down free tickets!

How often have we had to try and defend our brand of football? We were to a point at a stage of denial. "No we don't hoof it to fellaini, we've got baines and pienaar playing great stuff" - the reality was that when we ran out of ideas that was our solution. I think under martinez we may lose a few more, but we will win more and draw less. We will have the occasions where we absolutely destroy teams - we will see a few 6-1 wins. We will have the odd 4-3 loss. We will have less bored fans who will want to go to goodison. We will see more youngsters given a chance, we will see less favouritism to the old guard, we will see the players compete for a place.

I've said it all along, the good times are back under this manager - a team playing football we can be 'proud of' (martinez's words) - read into that what you will but I know exactly where he was coming from.

Enjoyed the game. We're getting better with each game, which is a good sign. Yes, there are still too many sloppy passes, and I get nervous sometimes as we pas our way from the back, but the players are beginning to get the system and to gel. Against most of the teams in the EPL, tonight's performance, even with so many second-team players, would have won the game.

Positives: Naismith, Howard (except for the mis-kick!), Coleman, Mirallas, Jelavic.
Negatives: Heitinga (needs to leave), Osman (will be fighting for a first team place), Stones (showed his inexperience near the end)
OK, but could improve: Fellaini (I wish he'd put his heart into it!), Baines
Didn't see enough to comment: Deulofeu, Oviedo

The neat thing is that we're coming out of the pre-season with a decent squad of players. The team line-up could vary from week to week without anyone wondering why the "first team" isn't playing. There are now multiple first teams and some useful options.

Got to say, I was very impressed. I thought the first 20 mins or so we were all over them. Considering the team have been learning two new systems for only a month I'm blown over to be honest.

I'm liking Fellaini and Gibson as a partnership. Neither set the world on fire today, but they also didn't really let the Juve players do much either. I'm more than happy for both of these to be anonymous in every game this season if it keeps the opposition at bay and let's the other players have the freedom to attack.

Mirallas seems to be growing even more, scoring goals and causing all kinds of trouble to what is a well drilled Italian title holder.

Stones is really staking a claim, I've seen a few people mention Duffy dropping down the pecking order. I think there might be a few more centre halfs at Everton worrying about this kid. In the last two games he's really looked the part. I hope we get Madrid and he keeps his place. See how he handles them. The future is bright for this lad.

I'm turning into a fully paid up member of Haf's Martinez Appreciation Society. With every game we play I'm getting more and more excited about the future. I can't wait until the weekend for another game, I just want to watch us play. We will be one of the most exciting teams to see play in the premier league next season.

Also, we've not even seen the Spanish boy wonder yet!

Ive got to say I really really rate McCarthy. You know when you watch other teams and some players just stand out a mile and you think "how good is he?". I know its a lot of money but Caulker has just gone to Cardiff for £9 mill and has made probably 20 starts in the prem? McCarthy has has 2-3 seasons in the centre of midfield in the prem in a struggling team and SHONE. He is a box to box midfielder that breaks up play, can get on the end of things and knows exactly what Martinez wants and obviously thrives on it. His wages wont be massive and if we can get him for £13 mill or roundabouts will be money well spent

efc1111 reacted to Steve_E in Bobby v Moyes - if you could have moyes back now would you?
I liked Martinez long before Moyes left and he was my first choice to succeed him once he did. But making any judgements now is way too soon. Even judging in 6 months will be premature, no matter whether results will have been good or bad. After one season we'll have an idea, after two seasons we'll really be able to assess the impact Martinez has had.

How would I find that Ince is all step overs on a better stage? That's a pretty random quote. You have stated previously that Ince has had one purple patch but he has had two standout seasons for Blackpool and I think he got Championship player of the season (I might be wrong). He can play wide right or left and would be ideal in a 4-3-3. All this playing on a cabbage patch that Blackpool play on. Blackburn paid £8 mill on Rhodes who was playing in league one. I think if he would be a top signing but its just my opinion

We paid 15m for Fellaini who had played only 5302 minutes in the mighty Belgian Jupiler Pro League (compared to Ince's 6047 minutes in the Championship). At 21, Ince was the highest goal scorer who wasn't a centre forward in the Championship with 18 goals and he was the assist leader among all players with 14. That's already a pretty accomplished and refined player in my opinion. And I think you'll find that very few players will spread out their goals evenly over the season and even less will actually play well for an entire season.

efc1111 reacted to Hafnia in 3-4 players wanted, but who are your choices?
Alcaraz is an improvement on Heitinga defensively and gives us a different type of defender - one who can collect the ball from keeper and not hoof it.

Kone is an improvement on any striker we have. Even using his goal stats for Wigan he has proven that, to my eyes, he is a better player than we have in Anichebe and Jelavic.

Robles for the price and wages is going to compete with Howard, rather than be a rest option like Mucha was. He is one for the future and may oust Howard this season.

Gerry D - Barcas next big hope €35m buy out clause, I think he will improve the team... excited to see him

All for a grand total of under £6m??? I'm more than happy with that. They have no doubt improved us and give us the platform to maybe look at using our money to strengthen in midfield,

McCarthy would do great. A player with hunger, discipline, quality, concentration, composure, work rate, good range of passing and ball retention. He ain't gonna excite Football manager fan boys who will imediately log on to compare him to Rip Van Winkle in the dutch league who got 20 goals and 25 assists in the dutch second division earning him comparisons with Johan Neeskens - but he is a proven premier league quality player who will improve.

efc1111 got a reaction from Sibdane in Gerard Deulofeu
A contrasting opinion here on the OS from a Barcelona reporter for a Catalan newspaper:
    http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/2013/07/19/-deulofeu-will-hypnotise-defenders-?

    Some key quotes:
“Gerard has a huge amount of talent, excellent physical qualities and he is technically gifted too.”

“I think there will be some very entertaining afternoons for the Everton fans watching him. "

“I think the presence of Roberto Martinez at Everton was very important in Gerard’s decision to join the club. Martinez is a Catalan coach who for years has shown that he likes to dominate the game with possession of the ball and that is perfectly suited to Deulofeu’s characteristics as a footballer. He is a coach that has put faith in young, skillful wingers before as shown with the cases of Callum McManaman and Victor Moses, who he managed at Wigan Athletic.”

efc1111 got a reaction from Matt in Pre-season: Accrington Stanley (away)
I know it was only Accrington Stanley but some of the football we played was downright exciting. Given that half of the squad have only been back in training for a couple of weeks and the rest are joining up now in dribs and drabs, it looks like a promising amount of progress has been made already.

Again, I know it was only Accrington, but Gibson looks like a man reborn and Martinez's preferred style is going to suit him perfectly. He could be a key player for years to come and my only concern is his injury history. We really need to add another midfield body who can play in a similar fashion.

Apologies I misread... I thought you said we had signed 'half their squad' and not 'after half their squad'.

Even so, I dont think we will be after the other two lads as I am sure Roberto would have had that business tied up by now as well.

They werent easily relegated either as they were only down with one game remaining so its not like they were sitting at the bottom of the table on 0 points!

Robles was only on loan and had only been there for 6 months, Alcaraz was out for large chunks of the season and his in and out of the team stats speak for themselves and Kone was probably their best or second best player. These players werent to blame for them going down and looking at the stats, if just Alcaraz had been fit they probably would have finished in mid table.

Although I quoted your response, I was aiming it more in the general direction of everyone that is implying that we are becoming Wigan Mk II and that players signed aren't going to be good enough because they played for Wigan. They are all an improvement on what we had and at least move us a couple of rungs up on the ladder on to the next level.
