Film Characters - That you just love!

Don't know how an actor the caliber of Samuel L Jackson ended up in that garbage.

If you want to see a good Carlyle appearance, watch him in Cracker 'To be a somebody'. I don't think he works well for movies. The Full Monty etc. That was awful.

I was going to put Hamidou out of Midnight Express in this. He doesn't say much, just looks angry all the time and enjoys beating and raping people. Always an ominous presence whenever he's on screen.

Broderick's Ferris Buller could be another name to include, but as with Pesci, the appeal soon wears off and just becomes irritating after so long - but they're fun for a while.

V - V for Vendetta - Hugo Weaving

Alan Moore's graphic novel was rightly converted into a film (albeit on a relatively small budget) to show a wider audience of its subliminal content. The film's protagonist (V) has become not only symbolic in cinema but also, one of the only film characters I know, to have a large following based on the character beliefs.

The mask (Guy Fawkes) is a 'unified' identity for the people. To represent hope and freedom. You never see Hugo Weaving's face (Agent Smith, Matrix) but it's what he represents that makes him a great character.

One of my all time favourites.

Rorschach - Watchmen - Jackie Earl Haley

Another Alan Moore character! Rorschach. The disturbed man, out to fight for the people. Complex character with multiple (combustible) personalities...hence the Rorschach mask...is as cool as they come.

Not your typical "super hero" (although that's the point), a regular guy whose grit determination to help the people in need gets him in rather sticky situations. A brilliant detective, he has a very analytically mind and very 'thorough' during his investigations. You wouldn't mess with him either. He's a combination of Columbo and Bruce Lee.

Awesome.

Spacey as Kint in Usual Suspects

Cruise as Vincent in Collateral

Freeman as Red and Robbins as Andy in Shawshank

Day Lewis as Bill Cutting in Gangs of New York

My personal favourite - Nicholson as Frank Costello in The Departed

Spacey is amazing in Usual Suspects, that last scene he is just creepy. Almost Hanibal creepy.

The Departed is an alround brilliant film, but Jack makes it!

I agree with John Candy in PT&A. Rather similar was Chris Farley in Tommy Boy.
