My biggest beef with Martinez is that we often look like we haven't done any planning for a game. Nobody knows where they are supposed to be, where and when they move, what they should be looking for, etc both in attack and on defense. It's absurd. Nobody has any certainty today as to what their responsibilities are. It just smacks of poor management.

That's not the point. As I said above, 100% effort and the right mentality should be a given, but you have to prepare for it. If it is not there, the manager is doing something wrong. Mentality is a crucial part of preparation in professional sport.

It is exactly the point. These are meant to be professional players.

Not sure you understand what that means, but it should be they are able to be responsible for thier own motivation.

The managers should be left to pick the team and tactics and manage the players.

They should be able to motivate themselves for a match.

Phil Neville putting in a tackle against Ronaldo. Did his manager instruct him to do that?

Sorry Shukes I completely disagree. Look at any successful professional team in any sport and the role of the manager/coach in getting the collective mentality right is vital.

Would Man Utds 'professionals' have won everything for 20 years without Ferguson drumming the will to win into them relentlessly? Would Australia win everything at cricket and rugby without that arrogance and grit us Brits hate being coached into them from the moment they play team sports? Would Leicester be top of the Premier League without Ranieri? And why did Barca dip with the same wonderful players between Guardiola and Enrique?

If all a manager does is pick the team, they would not get paid the ludicrous sums they do. Mental preparation and motivation is the magic touch great managers have, average managers don't. And we have a rank average manager.
