The problem when he is in the middle is that every single time he gives the ball away we seem to concede.
He runs himself into blind alleys regardless of where he is on the pitch. But when he’s out wide the ball tends to go out for a throw in or goal kick, when he does it in the middle we are massively exposed to the counter.
It’s very much risk and reward with him, unfortunately the risk when he’s in the middle is too high and the reward out wide isn’t high enough.

I think this is probably the best overview of him. He is certainly a player that has his moments but they do seem fairly evenly balanced between good and bad. On his good he might get into a top 10 side but his bad weighs him down to our level!

  2. I really like the look of him based on that video.

There were a lot of times that he had no right to get to a ball and it was his determination to win the ball that made it happen. He is quick, strong, good technique. He can bring people into the game with his hold up play.

My one concern would be that I am not sure how many goals he will score. He looks like he could do really well in the box because he does get in front of his defender, but I didn't see a lot from him from outside of the box, or even outside the penalty spot. He had a few goals in there where he was 1v1 but you don't get a lot of that in the Premier League. His stats show he is a 1 in 3 player in Italy but I think there would have to be some doubt as to whether he would be as prolific in England.

The youngsters being stuck here on the bench rather than being out on loan playing every week surely holds them back more. Look at Simms as a prime example - playing every week and scoring goals at Sunderland then back here for the odd cameo. Get players a proper loan like Branthwaite and Cannon (and Simms) then make that decision pre-season - will they get significant minutes here or do they need to play every week elsewhere? So, in my opinion, Davies being a bit part player is better than having someone like Warrington getting 5 minutes here and there - if we rate the youngsters but don’t think there’ll be enough opportunities then get them on a proper loan!

If we do keep Davies, I think this will be the club's thinking. He is cheap cover and he gives the young lads on loan a chance to grow away from the shitstorm that is the Everton first team.

I definitely think it would be a bad idea for Davies though. He needs to go and play week-in, week-out at the right level.

I'd be looking to get shut of Simms and keep Cannon around. At least until we get some forward players in.

I agree, I don't see much from Simms that suggests he is going to have a future here and Cannon looks to have more about him.

Given our dire financial situation, should we let players like him out on loan or give them a real chance?

It all depends on if they are good enough. If they are, then yes. If they aren't then as soon as Dom breaks down again, we will be in the same position as last season with an ineffective front line.

we couldn't even manage deadline panic buying in the last transfer window - I would definitely like to some decent player in before we start selling saleable players, I really have no fair in the board delivering.

We survived by the skin of our teeth, and I don't quite know how it was managed after the January transfer market we had. I was so low and embarrassed to be a Everton fan following the last transfer deadline day -  They managed to make a weak squad weaker. It was pure negligence, and the club got away with it by the skin of our teeth.

In the same breath, I am glad that Thelwell and Dyche didnt go and panic buy. Look at how many useless players the teams around us brought in and how little they added, especially in the forward areas we wanted.

Given our financial situation that would have been negligence.

The bigger act of negligence was not sacking Lampard sooner.

Getting some de ja vu here……. I recall making a strong point that centre half and defensive midfield have commonalities that make players transfer their skills which was met with opposition.

listening to stones talking about it the other day, starting at centre half and moving into DM is indeed a plausible solution.

And look how that went! 😂

That’s 7 players, we won’t be getting close to that especially ones that will take us to top 10. We have got a few half decent youngsters out on loan, but Dyche isn’t known for giving that many youngsters a chance. I think we need to buy 2-3 quality players if we can attract or afford them. 1 striker, 1 LB, and possibly 1 RW but because we let Coady go that’s now made CB become a priority.

I don't know how much stock you can put in the "Dyche doesn't play youngsters". The one decent young player he had (McNeil), he played. He is a pragmatist and I suspect he will give any player good enough a chance.

How much money would we get for him, and how much would it cost to replace him?

Is it not better to keep him and let him go at the end of next season. On the books his value has to be low as he only has 1 year left on his contract.  Plus if he is going on a free he will want to attract clubs.

I would say that Garner already looks like a replacement for a central Iwobi. He also covers right back like him as well!

Garner is on a 1/4 of the salary. We bought Garner for £10m. Iwobi has a market value of £25m according to Transfermarkt.

It's incorrect to say "He didn't play fullback because he wasn't good enough at CB". He played full back because the other FBs were injured and none of the other CB bar holgate can even remotely play FB.

I won't disagree that he has made a few bad decisions in games..but that can be said for ALL of our defenders. You even said yourself that our best defender nearly threw the Leicester game away.

Keane is not the answer, Branthwaite still has a lot to prove (hope he comes good). Perhaps Godfrey isn't the answer either...but given the other options and finances id like to see Godfrey compete with Branthwaite for the other CB role.

I don't think its incorrect. If he was good enough at centre back, he would have played centre back. He wouldnt have stayed on the bench when we had fit full backs.

I agree that plenty of our defenders have made mistakes but his decision making, and particularly his positions, have been bad ever since we signed him. Saying well, the others made lots of mistakes too, doesn't make him a better player, it just explains why we are here.

Personally, I would still say Keane is more of the answer than Godfrey. Problem is, I really don't like the question!

Keep seeing he has lost his pace, but in his last few appearances, that seemed his best attribute. He was beating forwards to the ball in sprints.

Feels like it’s more of a buzz word than anything else.

Still young and a lot to learn. But could be a good squad player, with potential to grow.

He definitely isn't as quick or as agile as he was.

The reason we are seeing him playing across the back four is because we have limited options and frankly his horror shows at full back are prob enough to drain most players of their confidence. We are notorious for playing guys out of position due to lack of squad depth. Will be have bad games at CB…possibly. Is he better than Holgate and Keane - I think so and I’m willing to find out.

I disagree. If he was as good as some people on here believe, he would have started at centre back. He played full back because he wasn't good enough at centre back and he was considered the next best option, probably because he is more mobile than the rest.

He has never been a good defender. He was dodgy at Norwich and whilst he has the physical attributes to be a good defender, his instinct to defend is not there. He makes shocking defensive decisions. You can put him in the best system you like but when it comes down to him making a decision, he will make too many bad ones.

The fact that he also now seems to have lost his pace makes him an even worse option.

This is where I am. I don’t think he went into the middle and lit the world up, he just played better than his very below par performances.

His worst giveaway was right in the middle of the pitch, where his  best position is.

I said before. Iwobi had his best games in the middle, but we were in freefall.

We move him to the side and his performances drop, but the team improves.

We’re Everton FC not Iwobi FC.

I would keep him, but if he is in the first team come the start of the season…. Then we’ve failed during the transfer window.

I agree with you apart from the last bit. Im not necessarily sure we will have the cash to move him out of the starting 11.

I think the lad has a lot of ability but lacks a bit when it comes to football intelligence. He has more of that than Gray though, which is worrying.

There’s a stat flying around and I know how you love a stat Bailey, which is that when Tarkowski and Coady were in partnership the team conceded far less goals than when Dyche changed it to Tarkowski and Keane to bring us a piece of the good old Burnley days that we’ve all been waiting for. I think evidence there that Coady is an improvement on Keane as well as Holgate and Godfrey.

I like stats that mean something, not rubbish like that 😜

I’m not disappointed that we didn’t sign him because he is a great player, although by all accounts he is a great character and leader in the dressing room. For me at £4.5m we should have signed him and sold the other 3, all of whom would bring in more than £4.5m so it’s money we could use elsewhere

Fair enough if we get shut of them and bring someone else in plus Branthwaite then I’m fine with it

As Romey says, thats all well and good if we can sell the other three. If we can't then buying Coady would be a waste of money we don't have.
