Wiggytop Posted March 13, 2023 Report Posted March 13, 2023 I was really surprised to hear the siren again at the before the teams came out on Saturday, I have very mixed feelings over it, I like that it gets the crowd up and could intimidate the opposition, but I can’t stop putting myself in to the shoes of a Ukrainian hearing the same thing and fearing for my life. I do hope the club talked it through with Vitaly, and that he was ok with bringing it back. Quote

Popular Post Shukes Posted March 13, 2023 Popular Post Report Posted March 13, 2023 Myko is Ukrainian mate, he isn’t like an English flower that looks to find insult. He won’t be insulted or hurt, or upset about it in the slightest. He maybe appreciated the reason why we suspended it. Gave me goosebumps when it came on. duncanmckenzieismagic, Matt, Wall Writer and 3 others 6 Quote
Palfy Posted March 13, 2023 Report Posted March 13, 2023 Have the club made the decision that the siren is more important to the survival of our PL status, than the feelings of anyone whether Ukrainian or other, who may feel offended by what it may represent to them. For me I have no real feelings either way, but I did find it strange that they never made it public that they intended to use it a few days before, just so they could gauge from the fans and the wider public's reaction. To play devils advocate, they never made it public before they started using it the first time either. The crowd reaction to it was great on Saturday. Quote

The crowd reaction to it was great on Saturday. Slightly different times from when they first used it, and from memory I believe people did know it was going to be used, I say that because the cameras were already focused on Tony in anticipation that it was about to sound. Yes I know the crowd reaction was electric when it sounded and hugely contributed to the overall atmosphere and possibly performance in the first half. My question was more did they play it as a weapon to help win the game without considering what damage it may of had on a certain section of people. For me I'm not trying to say that the board were right or wrong, that's for everybody's own conscience to decide. But what I will say is that we all know is this board have no scruples or morals when making decisions, is this another one of those occasions, or do people back the board on this occasion? Because there are thousands of Ukrainian women and children in this country that this could have had a very negative affect on. I personally think my reasoning holds merit and should not be dismissed out of hand, but obviously that is my opinion and not the opinion of all, to be honest I think my my disgust for this board and its dirty tricks campaign, particularly over the last few months is making me question their motives and integrity. Wall Writer Posted March 14, 2023 Report Posted March 14, 2023 I think there's a bit of an overreaction going on here. Nice gesture at the beginning, but time to move on. Heath and Romey 1878 2 Quote
Shukes Posted March 14, 2023 Report Posted March 14, 2023 They may actually be learning Palfy. Everytonw they have announced something in recent times, they have received flak for deflection tactics. So now they have tried the opposite. Quote

You are possibly right, what I would ask you is why was it a nice gesture in the first place, and why you feel that isn't relevant anymore. Quote

When it first came out I thought it was a bit over-the-top, but was like OK, whatever, solidarity and all that. It was only when I heard it at the weekend, that it actually registered that I hadn't heard it for so long. I wasn't even sure that it had been missing all that time - but it did make me feel excited for the match - which is I guess the aim of it. The initial reason that they stopped it was out of respect for the Ukrainian players of both Everton and Man City (Mykolenko and Zinchenko). Both of whom, by the way, were not in Ukraine when the fighting started, so would never have such "PTSD" that hearing it would have them fearing for their lives. It was a sign of respect, a symbolic gesture. I'm fine with that. To stretch that to we're never gonna use it again is a bit much. Especially for a reason that wasn't even the reason it was stopped in the first place. People don't need to be wrapped in cotton wool, they need opportunities, empowerment and the freedom to make their own decisions. I see this. I live in Poland, where there are more than 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees. In my town alone, there are more refugees than in the whole of the UK. I see them, meet them, talk to them. They are not cowering in the corner every time there is a loud noise. They are getting on with their lives, making the most of the available opportunities, just like everybody else. And yes, it's shit that they've lost their homes, and lost members of their family, and it's shit that their country is being decimated. But absolutely no one gives a shit whether Everton play a fucking air raid siren before their match or not. So my philosophy is yeah, let's not forget there's a devastating war going on, let's maintain the solidarity, let's give them the support they need to bring peace back to their country. But at the same time, let's also get on with our lives and UTFT!!! Shukes, Palfy, Matt and 2 others 4 1 Quote

That's good to hear. It's easy for us to minimize, but things like this really can cause distress. My grandad, 75 years after the Somme, would still wake up in a sweat if he heard thunder during the night. You only understand when you've lived through a war, and Myko's family are doing just that.
