The Barry / Alonso thing is a weird one.

It is a bit unclear about exactly what he wanted but if he wanted Alonso and Barry together it would have been a good move (albeit slow!). Somehow that ended up as pissing off Alonso, him leaving and Barry not joining. They then signed Aquilani to replace him which didn't work, albeit it sounds like he was unlucky with injuries.

My biggest concern with Rafa is that whilst he has signed some good players in his time, he has also bought a lot of very average players for decent enough money. I hope that Brands has more control however given that Benitez is clearly Mohsiri's man you could just see him going over the head of Brands and sanctioning the players Benitez wants.

Rafa's intention was to off-load Xabi for £30million and buy Barry for half that price. The appeal of Barry was that he was English and could play in two or three positions. But, believe it or not, only Juventus and Arsenal were keen to take Xabi.

“When it became clear those interested in Xabi were only prepared to pay £15m — and Aston Villa wanted £30m for Barry — the club pulled the plug.”

It will be very interesting to see the players Rafa is linked with.

Has he ever been at a club that really backed him with money?  I'm thinking Liverpool he was...... Some great signings.... Alonso, Torres, Maschereano...... Some crap ..... Aquilani.

He signed Koulibaily for Napoli.... £6.5m, Jorginho and dries mertens for about £8m apiece .....

    Optimistic

Very rare for managers to be involved in transfers in Italy. More likely the director of football picked them.

More miss than hit at Liverpool and Newcastle. Wouldn't include Alonso considering Rafa wanted rid of him. Didn't know how use a classy player and wanted him replaced with Barry. Better manager would have wanted both.

He'd rather a hard worker play out of position like Kuyt than manage a better player to work harder.

Have we created this negative a ti football ourselves?

I honestly have never heard this reputation with Rafa. Not sure where it came from.

Always thought he was a manager that stabilises a team, then progress’s them forward. Most fans from teams he has managed seem to class him as a manager they would have back.

I feel someone has said it in the thread…. And many have rolled with it.

Newcastle only scored more than 2 goals in a game once under him (against us, more telling about Silva).

I would snap their hand off at anything near £45m. We paid enough for him to start with, so a reasonable profit on a player who as done fook all for us as a team, in a market where player values are generally tumbling. He might go on to be a Worldie, but one in the hand is worth two in the bush as they say. £45M could go a fair way this summer.

They paid over €180 for Mbappe. Similar for Neymar. If he's replacing one of them he should be costing a lot more than £45m.

  5. “Please – no more X-Liverpool players telling Evertonians how lucky they are to have Benitez at Goodison,” wrote Keys. “No they’re not. Most don’t want him.

“The majority will tolerate him, but they don’t want lectures on how they should be feeling from across Stanley Park.

“It will end in tears. It always does with Benitez.”

The manager we’ve just hired tells you all you need to know - we’re not thinking long-term at all but are concerned with our immediate future, so it’s not a surprise if we don’t think long-term with player recruitment either.

I think they've shit the bed and gone with a manager they know won't walk away from us like Ancelotti did.

I'm thinking we've got him for at least two years until Brands has got the squad built.

Excuse my ignorance but why the dislike/lack of interest? I don't really know anything about him.

Knows nothing about football. Was just a random Spanish person in Liverpool university who then started supporting Liverpool as Benetiz was there. No idea how he ended up on sky.

  8. Friend is Polish and had swapped to England for the rest of the tournament. 20 minutes into the game said it's like watching Poland, England are shit.

England won, but it was more down to Germany not being clinical enough. That first half was piss poor and Germany could have easily had the game won.

Personally was only arsed about Pickford, so not that bias either way. That said if you're keeper is your best player it tends to mean the outfield haven't been that good.

Newcastle we’re desperate for him to stay and their fans are genuinely gutted he has come to Everton and who is to say he never had other offers?

There were other teams interested in him this time as well

Pretty certain the money on offer in China was more of a factor in him going there than a lack of other offers

He is credited with doing a great job at Chelsea under very difficult circumstances so I think you are way off the mark to suggest he’s done nothing since 2005

Newcastle fans are hardly known for their football knowledge.

Since him managing Newcastle in the championship nearly every club above them has changed manager, add all the top leagues in Europe as well. Yet no one touched him. Why?

He's a multimillionaire, the extra ££ in China wouldn't make a difference to him.

If he was so good why did Chelsea get rid? Likewise Madrid, Inter. All less than a year!

He's declined from his peak since 2005. You disagree? Champions League to championship and China.

  10. If he was that good a manager teams would have bit his hand off instead of him going off to China. Out of his last six jobs the only club to put up with for more than years is Newcastle.

His peak was in 2005 with the team Houlier built. Compare that side to the one he left and you see how poor a manager he is. His football is worse than Alladyce who the fans didn't give a minute.

  11. Potter is my second choice after Conte. When I first watched Brighton I seen a team similar to us under Moyes when he first come. However Potter is still improving, not scared to tweak things or stick with favourites regardless of form. More recently he seems to be developing the youth quite well too.

Looking at the Brighton team, he sorted out the defense with big centre halves. Made the team solid and then slowly added players who can play like Gross and Trossard.

Only negative I can think of football wise is his away form. Which is unfortunately also  like Moyes in going for the draw. Hopefully if he come to us he'd be more ambitious. Only other negative if he's not a big name to attract players, but that's what we've got Brands for.
