Newty82 got a reaction from Chach in Martinez - Direction?
Although much of the more negative talk has come from sitting at mid table like we were last Christmas, for me the feeling is totally different this year.

Statically we are better off (basic league stats anyway). Compare us today to were we sat after game 20 (end of Xmas fixtures), we already have more points, have scored more goals and (unless we concede an average of 3 in the next 3 games) are better off defensively (hard to believe!!!). Currently we are 6 points off 4th...end of Xmas last season we were 15 points off 4th and just 4 off the relegation places.

That stuff can be brushed off quite easily. The reason I don't feel quite so frustrated now as I did last season is because of our overall play. Last season we definately deserved no more than we had. The style was aweful, the players were shite. Everything was so below par. I remember arguing that we weren't in a relegation fight, that it would get better, simply because it couldn't get any worse!!! That was my only argument. It had to get better.. it would click and we would go on a run. We didn't of course. This season all the pieces are in place, the football is there, the players are doing better. I see no reason to panic and every reason to believe we will do better.

Yes, it is massively frustrating to see us concede the same type of goals again and again. It is massively frustrating to see us throw away games that we are in control of. But these are things that both manager and players can learn from and improve. It's not from a lack of talent from either.

Martinez has built a good squad here. I don't see how sacking him mid season would help us. It's a pointless exercise unless we were in the depths of a relegation fight. There would be a fair argument at the end of the season, if we finish mid table, to seriously assess the whole thing and see where we are at. At that point, if we are still continously conceding at corners, throwing games away etc, then questions should be asked.

We still have a Cup semi final to play in. Still are in the chasing pack up top. It's all still to play for. Nobody is running away this season, results are all over the place.

    We'll see.

So frustrating. Just couldnt get through. But how many times have we said that? And that's what will stop us being top 4 and see us fighting around the 5th-7th positions...that lack of attacking 'killer instinct'. Too many dummies, shimmies, extra touches, pauses, all in and around their box. On the plus side...Lukaku, Barkley and Geri will keep learning and getting better in and around the opposition box.

Geri was frustrating. Many of his final balls and passes were useless.

Also frustrating to concede a carbon copy goal that we've seen so often.

And...and...for the first time, I am actually frustrated with Martinez and his lack of subs. When your attacking players have run out of ideas and/or energy, bring another one on to see if he can add something else. To have only brought Baines on is criminal for me.

Feels like a defeat. Feels very frustrating just now. But at the same time, we played some excellent football. Created many chances, were unlucky to hot the framework 3 times. We did a lot right tonight. It just didn't happen.

He was just 'on it' today.

Those crosses are lethal, precise and clever. His technique on some of them is quite unique.

    Yes it matters.

Because any extra money is going straight to the top level player and not enough is finding it's way through the divisions, through to kids football, community programmes, back to the fans.

And the game itself isn't improving. It's not getting any better.

The players at the top obviously do deserve to get the highest cut. It is after all a short career and only a minute % make it to the top level. But they don't deserve that much. There's no justification.

Not sure where to post this as there have been a few different topics for this window!

Sky Sports have released a net spend table in this window.

You may be surprised to know that a decent amount of teams spent less NET than us...Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs to name a few.

But what is really surprising is that the NET spend of most teams is nothing to scream n shout about. And that most of the teams above us, actually still won't have a total squad equal to our quality. In my opinion anyway.

Oh behave you miserable old cunt. Just skimmed your posts because it's the same old shit. If you feel that bad, jump in your car and go chuck some pies at Thommos fire place shop...release the tension.

At the end of the day, we all see things differently. You can be all angry and whatever on the Internet, others are fine with what we have. I chose not to get so frustrated over something I can't control. What's the point? You chose the opposite. I get the anger, fair enough, I just don't get this attitude that those who aren't ranting everyday 'just accept mediocrity' etc. I accept reality.

By the way, the Urban Dictionary meaning of 'happy clapping' is...

A rather disturbing trend in Britain today. It involves being happy slapped by someone who has the clap, and who has recently rubbed their fishy bits with their hand.

Pete: "Cor blimey Jimmy, why ave you got a face like a dogs arse?"

Jimmy: "I just got happy clapped by a transvestite, I'm still in shock"

Pete: "Jesus, this happy clapping is getting out of control"

    Peace n out.

Whatever anyone says, it's a results business. We get the results, no one is arsed anymore. We don't, well, guess we'll have to keep listening to/reading the other stuff.

I'd be delighted to have him back. Really enjoyed what he brought with him last season.

But £9 mill is a joke. With one year left of his contract, not playing, training with u21's...no more than £5 mill for me.

I'd be dissapointed if we don't bring in that No.10 that Martinez has talked about. So Lennon + a kind of 'marquee' No.10, on top of our other business, would be spunktastic.

Ok, so those who spend more must have the better squads. Fair enough, I'm just stupid.

    Last 5 years spend...(in millions £)

    City - 473
    Chelsea - 462
    Utd - 413
    Pool - 349
    Arsenal - 254
    Spurs - 254
    Soton - 164
    Newcastle - 136
    Villa - 122
    S'land - 108
    W'Ham - 107
    EVERTON - 92
    Swansea - 80
    Palace - 75
    WBA - 75
    Stoke - 70
    Norwich - 63
    Leicester - 55
    Bournemouth - 25
    Watford - 12

It would be interesting to see the average league position for the last 5 years.

The problem with only looking at what is spent is that you fail to see what the club has sold or what they have kept hold of.

It's a difference of opinions. I just personally think there is more to it than just splashing the cash.

You're saying there is a 400% jump...is this 'other operating costs'? The previous post stated 'other operating costs' went from £11.7mill to £21.?mill. What's 400% in relation to?

Because that's the nature of the game. We won't be the only ones leaving it late. It's only us fans that create hysteria from it.

I don't know if you end up paying more or less than market value by leaving it late. I think it's just a bit of to and thro, see who buckles first.

I honestly feel for Stones. All this is a total head fuck for a 21 year old.

No doubt he would have been advised to put in a request by his agent. An agent who would made a lot of money from his transfer. Before that, the lad was more than happy.

Stones just wants to play football and have a good career. Like every pro out there, he wants to play at the highest level he possibly can. Win as many cups as he can. Get as many England caps as possible. Play in Europe every season. Play in the Euros and the World Cup. And make as much money as possible. Why? Because it's every boys dream and in just 15 years time it will be all over.

He doesn't need to bleed blue. He doesn't need to love the club. He doesn't need to grovel to fat pie eating beer guzzling know it all foul mouthed abusive blokes who can only but dream. All he needs to do is pull on that shirt with that famous motto and give it his all every week. And he is doing just that.

The lad is a good pro in my eyes, and I'm glad he is part of the club.

We are not the most hated club in the media just now. We are the favourites. We have given them plenty of page coverage. Which is great...because now every fucker around the world is reading about us on a daily basis and will be keeping an eye on us. Those not in the know, will become a bit inquisitive. Happy days.

BarnsleyFan, I think I kind of defended you the other night on another thread. Shame on me. Because today, you're being an arse. I can understand why. And let's not pretend it's because you have some deep lying affection for Stones and you're really passionate about his career progression. You, like any fan, want the best for your club. And the best for your club is....a nice £6 million sell on fee. Let's be honest, that's what's your really bothered about. From what I seen the other night, you and your club have plenty to look forward if you can keep hold of those youngsters (sounds familiar, doesn't it?!). So let me ask, what would you prefer...keep those young players and progress as a club to the next level or keep selling them, inflate the bank balance, but stay stuck where you are?

Let's get something else right too. In no way at all are we hypocrites. To be comparing our signing of Stones to Chelsea's chasing of Stones is so far wide of the mark. When we signed Stones from you...we were one of several clubs chasing him. We didn't speak about him in press conferences, we didn't spin stories, we didn't at all unsettle the player. We paid a more than fair fee and included a more than fair sell on fee. This is a stark comparison to how Chelsea and Jose have conducted 'business' in recent months. Everton have not done any harm to Stones. Chelsea, Jose, his agent and the media have. John Stones is in a brilliant close knit dressing room. With a manager who clearly genuinely cares and admires the lad, and will do all he can to look after him and progress him. There are many things wrong with Everton FC, but one thing I am really proud about is how we go about our transfer dealings. And how we look after our players.

That's the present. What about the future. One of the reasons I believe Martinez was so pissed off at half time at Barnsley is that I think he is placing a huge emphasis on winning silverware ASAP in order to keep this squad together. He knows, as we do, that if we don't deliver cups and European football, then he can't hope to keep this lot together. He's put a lot of pressure on himself, and I think it will bring the best out of him. However, I'm not sure we can turn it around quick enough to keep Stones. If he is deserving of it, he will move onto a richer club like Chelsea. Historically, we can offer more. But what we did 30 years ago is no good to a player who has a short career at the very top to win and achieve as much as possible. If we can't get up there, then no doubt he will move. At a higher value.

People who shout shit and boo are pure cretins who know fuck all about the morals of life.

At the end of the day, it's one player with one chance. We won't forever say no, just this time, for this year. Our clubs will be around for a lot longer than these players. What matters more?
