Weirdness Abounds (or the Idrissa Gana Gueye Thread)

Recommended Posts

I'd never even heard of him and he played a full season in the prem .

I think this is what is stopping me from being so excited. People are mentioning cheap unheard players that have come in and lit up the Prem, well this bloke's been here for a year and I've not heard of him. I need to snap out of it. Would be excited if he came from Lille, sad isn't it

He plays an 'undecorated' position though.

There will be a fair few no name players who did well last season but all eyes were on Leicester City.

If Koeman and Walsh say he's good enough, with their pretty impressive track record, you have to put some faith there.

There's plenty of known players who play that position there's no such thing as an undecorated position.

I just hope that he can pass forward as well as defend and do what he does best. The problem with our current midfielders is they're all too 'safe'. I'm sick of the sideways passing Martinez developed and I'm bored of McCarthy, Besic, Barry, Cleverley and Gibson (to be fair Gibson is the best out of them at actually setting up attacks but he's always injured). We definitely need one more in there and then we can offload 2 if not 3 of the others. I've been so disappointed in McCarthy lately that I wouldn't be fussed if he left. I think the novelty is starting to wear off with Besic as well. He's not that good on the ball and we need more than his aggression in midfield if we're actually thinking of doing something this season. Will be very interesting to see what Koeman thinks of our midfielders.

Try telling that to Paul Pogba who does the same job, Matic, Witsel, Carvalho?

Without researching it, be honest (and I know you're an honest bloke!)...in the premiership last season, can you name as many DM's as you can attackers for each team? I bet you knew who Villas attacker was but you never heard of this guy?!

I mean, it's easy naming the most known names in European football (although I didn't realise Pogba was a DM, always thought he was more attacking???), but how much attention is paid to the dirty dogs in DM as opposed to the goalscorer or skillful attacking player? You don't tune in to a highlights programme and see loads of interceptions from a DM, or the 'boring' clean up work that they do. It's just less attractive. It doesn't 'sell'. The DM is the fat bird where as the attacker is the pretty slim bird...which one sells more bikinis?!!!

In my view, or opinion, a DM is on a par with a GK. They only get credited when they are either exceptional or have an outstanding game.

There's plenty of people out there who just don't get what a DM does. Proof is on this forum alone.

I might have this one totally wrong!!!

In terms of actually using the ball, Gibson is by far the best out of those. Is he the best player? Probably not but Gibson can actually pass forward and set up attacks. Doesn't mean I want him to stay but we need to get rid of most of our centre midfielders as I don't think they offer much apart from running around.

Agree with that Geth he has the best range and vision from our current crop

A fit healthy and level headed Gibson with games under his belt would start most games for a fair few decent sides sadly that's a rarity and unlikely to happen

Not a player I wanted to see given a contract extension nor one I want to see start most games but if he keeps himself fit he'll be a useful squad player

I disagree mate, if a player isgood enough he is high profile eneogh regardless of where he plays. Position means nothing. If the player is good he'll be known it's that simple.

How many people had rasitically heard of or watched Ronaldo before he moved to United?

Tell me who is Real Madrid DCM? Bayern? How about PSG? Big clubs and they all have big time players there. No cheating pad.

To be fair I only saw Kante mentioned when people suddenly thought...they might actually do this.

Before then I didn't have a clue how good he was. Though thier forward line were well known.

Kroos Madrid, Vidal Bayern and Krychawiak (sp) PSG I think. Khedera (sp) Pogba Juve, busquetes Barca, all top class players Toure, Matic, again all massive names. Position means fuck all if you're a class player it will shine through.

If I have any wrong I apologise.

Edit I forgot Alonso.

My point was mate that those teams finished pretty well and should have decent players in those positions.

But we don't know them without research.

You may not but I'd bet most who follow football closely do.

And can't we just kick Pad while his phone is playing up?

Go on, give it a go, it's fun!

Yeah. He's wrong. He's a bellwhiff.

His phones not playing up...he's researching DM'S of every team in every league!!!

(No right to reply Mr Paddy!)

You got 2 out of 3 wrong.

Real Casemiro (Kroos isn't a DCM he's an ACM for them he can't defend to save his life)

PSG - Blaise matuidi (amazing player)

Bayern - correct Vidal Alonso and new boy Sanchez

Toure wasn't a DCM he was box to box, same with pogba he's not DCM he's box to box or ACM. Neither defends well.

Pure defensive players aren't well known.

Koeman needs to work on his discipline to get the most out of him.

It's obvious where the comparisons to Kante start, and where they end:

Tackles: Kante 175 (1st), Gueye 144 (2nd)

Interceptions: Kante 156 (1st), Gueye 141 (2nd)

Fouls: Kante 43 (25th), Gueye 68 (1st)

Yellow Cards: Kante 3 (133rd), Gueye 10 (2nd)

He is now with a better team which should mean less fouls.

Krychowiak only just moved. He played for Sevilla last season soI think Pad is googling this stuff.

No I'm not, I've no reason to Google anything if I don't know I'd just say I don't know. He will be their cdm this season wont he. I also have a 9 year old son who is obsessed with FIFA who could put us all to shame and name probably every single player and their position for most of the top teams.

ACM/DCM does my fucking head in. What's wrong with just being a midfielder?

Players like Kroos and Alonso can do everything, why pigeon hole them? Keane, Vieira, could do the lot. Why be one or the other unless your game is limited?

My perfect midfield would be a completely interchangeable and dynamic 3. All can defend, all can pass, all can be in the right place at the right time. Would love a trio that could form a partnership where they're all on the same level and just 'know' when to do their roles.

Because that's the modern game. Rafa was fired because he played 3 creative attacking mids in their midfield and their defense was getting hammered. They had no DCM, the press, pundits, other teams were roasting them alive because Kroos and the like cannot defend.

Once zidane was put in the first thing he did was put Casemiro in and boom, they started defending well and having clean sheets because he benched James to have a DCM.

Forget the position, I just hate the fucking name. It's the FIFA generation, ten years ago there was players who would sit in the midfield and put tackles in and sit deep. They used to be called a midfielder. Now you have to be a DCM or and ACM. It's just nonsense. No one uses to call Scholes an ACM. The same as playing 4231, it's no different from 433, but now everything has names that are just crap from computer games.

To be honest, I use the terminology to better describe the type of player I mean. Striker/midfielder/defender tags are just too generic since there's lots of variations on each position. You've even got sweeper 'keeper now too ffs!

This is why I use it. But the doesn't mean I agree with it (the terms used).

My head is falling off here!

If I see false nine I'll also shit my pants in rage! You're just playing someone up front who doesn't normally play there. You've not reinvented the wheel you cunt!!!

Got to disagree with you there mate. You've got players in different positions that do different jobs. Some are ball winners, some are deep playmakers or even "half backs" . The games changed since every player was a box to box midfielder because the focus is with players strengths. If that's good or bad for the game who knows, maybe Barkley would have been a better player if he trained to be a box to box player younger, but look at a modern number 10, you want them primarily to attack not uselessly defend.

Maybe you're old school!

Half backs!!!

I'm done!!

Four four fucking two

I get your point by the way Aiden, I agree about players who specialise being needed very much so. But all the bullshit names and terms that have come into the game, it's all bollocks. Just people along the line making the simple sound complicated so they look smart and it's caught on and been pushed further and further by computer games.

Looking forward to seeing Gana in midfield. Hopefully he'll show us some positives.

Come on, guys. I learned this stuff playing for my primary school team.

1: goalkeeper

2: right fullback

3: left fullback

4: right half

5: centre half

6: left half

7: right wing

8: inside right

9: centre forward

10: inside left

11: left wing

I have no idea what all these acronyms, or numbers higher than 11, mean. Did a search for DCM and it provided a list of Democrat Committee Members - all number 11s.
