Mostly Jags fans who don't want Johnny to take his place

Jags and Distin in both CB roles, thats our best combo. Distin and Jags work well together and I think theyre both top class CBs, I like Heitinga but we should play him next season when Distin is getting too old (IF he starts to deteriorate next season that is, I think he just gets better and better though).

It has been so frustrating seeing Heitinga getting pushed from pillar to post in terms of playing position.

He has always been a quality centreback and nothing more than a stop gap in midfield, similar to what was happening with Jags when he first arrived.

Made up with the result today. The City and Chelsea games have shown everything that has been good about us for the last couple of years.

I don't want this match day thread to go off topic but it's amazing that this one hasn't turned into a discussion about Rodgers for EFC manager and Moyes out!!! Oh yeah, we won and they lost! Who said football fans weren't fickle?!

Moyes is and will continue to do it as long as he is our leader... IN MOYES WE TRUST! COYB!

Ah the temporary intoxication of a win has kicked in, I remember this feeling well after the city game. Unfortunately the high was from cheaply distilled vodka, we had no money in our pockets but the sky blue land lord was an accommodating publican.

Unfortunately the hang over was such that we were unable to make the most of the free champagne on offer at Wigan and spewed up the man city booze over our suits.

Stop talking bollocks c1982.

What were you thinking being happy and optemistic that Everton have won? After all, at this club the fashionable thing to do after a victory is moan about all the bad things that are going on and how we are going to cock it up for ourselves.

don't be having too much panda pops tonight, you may pee the bed you've gotten so giddy...

Ffs, the match thread was a match thread till c decided to see how many people had a memory that lasts more than two weeks... Get a grip, the season has been shocking in most parts. Bore football, lowering attendances, hoof tactics and frankly some of the worst performances I have seen.

Shall I copy and paste some posts to give you a flavour???

Practice what you preach, enjoy the 3 points today - most unexpected but most welcome.

Unless you want to change the thread title to "forget the last 6 months, moyes is the best"

Ha ha... top post.

Anyway EFC 2 - 0 CFC although we've had a poor season (by the high standards Moyes has set) we can be optimistic (minus a few stuck records) that we're still in the FA Cup and not far off the Europa chasing pack!!!

I watched the game on a ESPN Bangladeshi link and the English pundits praised Moyes as a genius at the end of the match and the asian fella added "if he was a genius he would do it from the start of the season, day one not half way through" he also commented on the Liverpool match that "it didnt look like 19 v 18 championships but 12 to none." Agree with him on both accounts. BBC should sign him up fot motd would be refreshing to hear some real thoughts on the days games

I'll admit that I have been out-spoken about Everton this season and I have been out-spoken about Moyes and the board in previous months. I do believe however that you should be happy when your team wins and you should do all that you can to get behind them when they have done well. You can look through my posts all you want but before 99% of our games I will predict a win because I am always optemistic and I very rarely slag our players off because I don't think it does the team any good.

I'm sick and tired of people being negative when we do well and it makes me bother why you support Everton. Do you seriously get a kick out of moaning about our club week in and week out? We have beaten Chelsea who are a world class team 2-0 and I can't understand how you can't be happy about that fact, whether we have had a good season or not it is irrelevant because the boys have shown today that they have the passion and determination to get into Europe, it's people like you who seem to want to over-look that.

It's clearly not though. I love jags but him and Distin doesn't work, Heitinga/Distin is our best proven combo.

Have to agree... On the Subject of our CB's, i would love Duffy to get more game time with Heitinga, wether it be this season or in pre season. Think he would be a great mentor for him. Saw a glance of Heitinga's character in him already, as soon as he came on he was marshalling others about, loved that, its what you need from a CB.

Our game plan still was to hoof it towards Stracqualursi, but if it works I guess you can't complain too much. Stracq did a great job competing in those aerial duels, putting his body on the line, generally bulldozing through their defense. It was mainly our defensive organisation and a bit of luck to go one up early in the game that got us the win though. Chelsea looked staler than we ever have this season. It was a bold move from Moyes to put pressure on them so high on the pitch instead of sitting back to profit from their high line like a lot of other managers have this season.

Just a simple question (after reading some of the comments here.) Heits and Distin for CD pairing and Jags as DM?? Anyone think that might work?

Please no, Warnock claimed he was the next Veira there, but he never looked good when he's played there for us. Plus Felli excels there

I am so, so, so proud of the team after that performance. It was like the Everton of old (for the most part); fighting for absolutely everything, putting pressure on the opposition at every single opportunity, throwing ourselves in front of everything to stop attempts on goal, winning the ball back constantly etc etc. Where has all of that been this season? That was probably the most enjoyable game of ours I've sat through this season. Chelsea had a fair bit of the ball but we nullified them for most of the game.

We started the game extremely well and for the first 15 or so minutes we were very comfortable, deservedly took the lead and Chelsea looked shaken. But we allowed them into the game after that first quarter because we just couldn't keep hold of the ball, we stopped getting in their faces, and both of our full-backs gave their widemen all the space in the world, so they crapped all over us in terms of possession and looked dangerous right until half-time. I really felt it was just a matter of time before they equalised.

Fortunately we held out until half-time and when we came out for the second half we were on it right from the off. We were absolutely brilliant, we really were. Chelsea had a couple of half chances, and one major chance right at the end from Lukaku, but other than that I felt we were comfortable and us getting a second goal was thoroughly earned. There was so much hard work put in by the lads and it was coupled with skill as well. It was symmetry. We got the right balance of the two. You had the work rate of Straq, Cahill, the total midfield dominance of Fellaini, and the skill and link-up from Donovan, Baines, Pienaar, and Drenthe when he came on.

There aren't many negative points to take out of today IMO, and we haven't been able to say that very often this season. I hope the players take this on now and don't let themselves down in the following game.

COYB!

Howard - Yes he flapped at one cross he really should have caught comfortably but he made a crucial save towards the end from Lukaku that made up for that, IMO, and in truth he didn't have all that much to do did he?

Neville - A dodgy clearing header and giving the Chelsea wide player/s a little too much room (particularly in the first half) aside I really don't think he played that badly. Certainly much improved from what he's served up for most of this season. And he was one of the ones who threw himself infront of piledrivers.

Heitinga - He was a general at the back for us today. I watched him closely and he was constantly talking to Neville and Distin, and after Howard flapped at the cross he should have caught he was telling him to calm down. I know he's a bit like marmite to Evertonians but I love him and I thought he was fantastic at the back again, and in my eyes he should be first choice at CB. He brings a calmness to our defence that Distin and Jagielka lack. I know we haven't kept many cleansheets this season but I think all, or most, of the cleansheets we have kept have come when Heitinga has been playing at CB.

Distin - Apart from a reckless challenge he put in early on Torres in our penalty area, which would surely have been given if he'd landed the tackle, he was absolutely quality. I lost count of the amount of clearing headers he made and he was another player that threw himself infront of everything. He was a completely different player to the one that looked so nervy against Wigan.

Baines - Like Neville he allowed the Chelsea wideman so much time and space it was scary. But going forward he was looking a lot closer to what has had all us salivating over for the past few years. Where in the Wigan game I didn't think the link-up with Pienaar was there today it was most definitely back. There were lots of fast, one touch plays between them which really was gorgeous to watch.

Donovan - IMO that was his best game since his return here. However, I still don't think he was anywhere near the level he showed in his first stint. He worked extremely hard for us and covered every blade of grass, I just wish he'd show the same sort of oomph going forward that made him such a fan favourite last time round. He seems almost hesitant to go forward.

Gibson - I thought he was supposed to be able to pass? All I see him do is play our players into trouble with his passing. And maybe he has an obsession wih crop circles because, boy, does he love spending time in our centre circle. I really thought he was going to prove me wrong after his debut but since then my worst fears about him are being confirmed; he's a nothingy player.

Fellaini - The dominator, that's the only way to describe what he showed today. He ran the centre of the park, it belonged to him. If the ball was in the middle of the pitch he took it. Whether that had to come about by winning the ball back from a Chelsea player or bringing the ball down out of the sky. I never thought I could get so much happiness from watching a player bringing the ball down from the air on his chest, but when Felli does it I can't help but grin like a little kid. Heitinga brings calmness to our defence and Fellaini does the same for our midfield.

Pienaar - Where others slacked off in the first half I thought he was on his A game from the first whistle to the last whistle, he was right in Chelsea's faces all game long. Not satisfied with just working hard he got our creative juices flowing and was involved in everything. And I mean everything. If there was anything positive happening then he was playing a key role in it. He added the skill to our play that we've been lacking this season and he brought out the best in Baines. He got a bit lucky with the ball dropping to him for our opener but he finished it brilliantly. My MOTM.

Cahill - He was one of the main contributors to our early pressing play but was also one of the worst ones who dropped off inthat first half. However, in the second half I thought he was right on it again, getting at Chelsea, niggling at them, holding the ball up. Probably his best game for us this season.

Denis - Like Pienaar, he was at Chelsea from the first whistle to the last whistle. He left everything he had on that pitch and completely deserved the standing ovation he got when he was substituted. The Chelsea defenders didn't know what to do with him and resorted to fouling him (and mostly getting away with it too), but he never looked downhearted or gave up, he kept going and held the ball up superbly. And that through ball with the outside of his foot toward the end of the game showed a deft touch I didn't think he had. And he took his goal really well too.

Noticed that. I think he'll grow into this league if we can keep him. He's won people over with his effort, but I do think he has more to offer. I don't think his touch is as bad as some have said. Not every big man is Fellaini. Great report! The stance I've taken with him is more analytical in the way I assess footballing talent. He's superb at holding the ball up, including others and he's got great awareness at times. Isn't that talent? I saw some instances when he was dovetailing with Donovan on the right, small flicks and dummies, it was great to watch. We'd have a really cool and uncharacteristic front line if we could build on his strengths and have a healthy rotation with Jelavic, or perhaps both for some matches?

Exactly!

I don't know why some bother saying they support EFC anymore... if they're that opposed why not start their own team like disgruntled man.utd fans did? I respect FC United fans, they acted rather than just moaning.

Anyway, the fans at GP were excellent yesterday - days like this I have missed and hope for a few more before the end of the season.

Only caught the highlights but what a cracking result and display. I really would like to see Denis given a contract He's the type of player that just causes problems a solid unit who's hold up play is as good as any I've seen this season in all honesty.

As for CB paring at present it HAS to be Heitinga and Distin there is a cohesion between them that we don't see when Jags is paired with one or the other.

I would like to see Duffy blooded in down the line as a long term replacement for Distin don't get me wrong I think the big man has plenty left in the tank but at 34 won't have to many years left in him as a starter. He's actually one of my choices for best buy in the last 5 or so years tbh..

Hopefully get a good win against the Lashers in the cup and set us up for what "should be" 3 points against QPR

Wow, just wow. It's obvious that Jags and Distin do not make a good combination, you only have to have watched them play together to see that they just look wrong together. They look scarily shaky together. They don't talk to each other, which causes confusion. The pair of them need someone next to them who is going to marshal them, so it's got to be one or the other that plays, not them together.

You want Heitinga to sit on the bench til next season once Jags is back despite the fact that Heitinga has been absolutely class and has been involved in pretty much all of our cleansheets this season? Baffling.

Heitinga plus a n other for me. He's the composer at the back, long run Duffy will be his apprentice.

Have a good look at jags after his injury.

Dennis has become that player who is giving the others a kick in the arse. Was hoping we would have a midfielder to do that, I still think we need a general who can rally, cajole and up the tempo. Felli just gets on with it - admirably so at times. However he needs someone with him who can battle the stagnant mindset that creeps in.

Another very good victory from Everton yesterday and by two goals! Things are looking a lot more positive within the space of a 3-4 games.

It looks like the gap between Everton and Euro contenders is probably a bridge too far, but it's not impossible.

It would be too easy to say Chelsea are a bit of a mess at the moment. By their usual standards they're below par, but their league position doesn't lie - they are still a top team and few teams can expect to take 3 points off them.

Nice one Everton!

agree with almost everything that has been said so far, even the captaincy comments and ive not been heitinga,s biggest fan but both centre backs were excellent yesterday, felli got my m.o.m,lets not worry about gibson hes doing a job while our centre mids are injured he will be a good squad member.coyb !!!.

I really hope he's gonna be a squad player, but you never know with Moyes. If Fellaini weren't carrying him so well, Gibson would have had a lot of fans on his back for the performances he's been putting in, he could soon take Rodwells invisible man tag from last season if he doesnt up his game.

TBH, ill give credit about that for Straqu. I said after city game, that hes like a gunpowder for us. Hes fighting and hard working and never give up attitude has got whole team in flames. Yeah, didnt work at wigan that well, but you cant say they didnt fight. Ill blame mostly the weather and pitch for our poor result there. When others watch him at work, they just cant to do anything else than giving all out of themselves aswell. Good run lately has alos got our self confidence high. Only thing that worries me atm is that we are really having so many loanplayers atm in huge roles for us. Need to get them signed. At least Donovan, Peanuts and Straqu. If we have money i would keep R.R. also.
