Exactly we played like we was winning this game no matter what! We didn't play bad and we didn't play great but you could tell we played to win! We played with purpose grit and determination to get a result. And that's what I seen, A Everton team with a desire to win!
I haven't seen that from us for a long time a desire to win. Fuck all this if we played a better team blah blah shit! Any team tonight we would have give a game. There was fire in our belly's and we got a result. We need to keep that up now for the rest of the season, Where not as bad as some people make out.

Decent old game of footy that.
We won 2-1. Could have lost 2-1.
Could have won 4-1. Could have lost 4-1.
    Might have been 4-4!!!
So impressed with Coleman. He makes babies with a broken leg then comes back like he's played every week. When they do his autopsy, they'll find wires and circuit boards. If he gets cremated, there'll be no ash, just a stream of molten steel. 60 grands worth of the earths finest natural resource.

I get the concept of rotating players when the team faces a hectic schedule, but this was not the way to do it. I'd rather beat Bournemouth 2-1 and lose to United 5-0 than lose both games 2-1. We should have played the stronger defensive pairing today.

    He probably would help actually

Teams know we have no goal threat and no pace going forward . They know they can commit men forward against us because they are safe in the knowledge that we are not going to hurt them with a counter attack

At least if we had a goal scorer and some pace up top it would give them something to think about

Still scoring and leading the attacks. He embodies Everton for me; hard work, scores and humble. If only our starting 11 had the same
When i talk about character, that’s it.

I'd give him a 7/10 for this season.

Took a bit to really get going, to find our flow and adapt to how he wanted us to play, by which time we'd gone out of the cups.

I've found some of his tactics frustrating. I don't like some of the overly negative set ups away from home. I think some of the away results could have been better with a more positive starting 11. And I think we play a few too many long balls. But I think this is as much circumstance of what he has at his disposable forcing his hand.

I like his upfront style and almost arrogant attitude. I like his no bullshit ways. I think we needed that here.

His style of play has meant we are pretty solid at the back and have one of the best defensive records in the league. No coincidence as his Southampton team also had one of the best defences each season he was there. But we also score goals. I can see how he wants us to play and the fact he wants more creative players behind the striker gives me hope that he wants to be more expansive going forward.

7th is a good finish. Not mind blowing. But certainly good enough for a first season with only a few players of his own choice.

People have to remember that the majority of this squad were with us in Martinez first season and the key players were at their peak in that amazing first season. It was just the right blend of experience and youth that really got us up there. Age doesn't stop, and those key core players have got older and past their peak. Plus we are/were riddled with dead wood and mediocre players.

This pre season, we'll get rid of more dead wood and bring in more players of Koemans choice. It's going to be real tough to crack the current top 6, but I think we'll be much better equipped to have a good go at it. Results against them will be the decider.

With what has gone on away from the first team, it has been a real good year for Everton. I've never felt so excited going into a pre season!

Haf come on mate just except what he is! Yes he chats shit! Yes he can be a lazy fuck! But he's still our best striker we have had for a very long time. Say we get a new striker in an get rid of rom and the new lid scores 10 goals next season and we finish 9th because he hasn't scored 20 but them extra 10 goals would make us 4th would you be happy with that? The new lads got a better touch can sing u a lullaby and can pirouette like in dirty dancing but still hold the ball. Are you happy? Goals win games mate and we not getting better than rom with no champions league and no pull yet to bring someone better in! Name me 5 better strikers we can get next season! Go!

probably Romey because that is the opening bid and he is well aware that they would bid higher.

I don't see us letting him go cheap though. We'd be foolish to let him go for less than the 40m i mentioned.

I'd say 40 would be absolute minimum and I'd put add-ons into that as well.

coxy051 reacted to duncanmckenzieismagic in Would Fellaini fit in our team today?
I'm not disputing that it wa a great bit of business but the question was would he fit into our team and I think the answer is yes
As peteo says his best position is as DM and I agree with him that he would be more consistent if he was played there week in week out. Does anyone think McCarthy and Barry would be churning out 7 out of 10 performances every week if they were asked to play out of position?
I think we could do with a another DM because if one of those two got injured we have no cover . Gibson will never be fit enough and so if the price was right I would gladly take him back
Don't get me wrong I wouldn't be interested at anywhere near the price they paid us for him

I think this thread just goes to prove how fickle some Everton fans are
It took him time to settle at Everton yet people want to write him off after half a season at United

I think he would easily slot into our side as a DM and could be used behind the striker when we need a plan B, something we don't seem to have at the moment

Having said that I think it would cost too much to bring him back, but at the right price it's a no brainier

coxy051 reacted to Bailey in Would Fellaini fit in our team today?
He is the type of player that sits just ahead of the CB's and stops any attacking plays. He isnt a defensive playmaker like Barry, he is a pure destroyer type, one that stops the floating creative players from doing anything whilst allowing the attacking players in his own team the freedom to be able to stay more on the front foot. There are lots of types of defensive midfielder and in truth they arent the type of player that you need in your team for every game of the season but that doesnt make it any less important.

How you can say his best position is behind the striker is beyond me. Average attacking positional awareness, average touch with his back to goal, average final third passer, average finisher... Yep definitely a number 10.

When I have seen him he hasnt been played as I suggester he should be. He has been more often than not as a box to box player, which he can do, but its not what he is best at doing. He played the majority of time with us either in that position or further forward. In terms of his overall football ability, I admit that I did overrate him a little after seeing how the likes of Barry and Mccarthy have come in and adapted to any role they are asked to play as it makes you appreciate the intelligence of those players (and Fellaini is far from intelligent!). Thats why Fellaini needs to see the whole game in front of him, he needs to be able to sit between the lines, break up attacks and then lay it off to those ahead of him, much like Carsley used to do, but at a much higher level.

Check through man of match threads, read your own comments if you have forgotten what a great player Fellaini is.

    People do forget quickly.

Still, would i have him back? Yes
Would he bench Barry or McCarthy? No not in his current form.

He is a typical example of a team selling their biggest and best player and improving on their over all squad. Id do the same with Baines in the summer if i knew that it would improve the squad. (Plus i have a small man crush on Oviedo) i love Baines to bits but if i knew it would improve the squad then its a no brainer

He is a specialist defensive midfielder, the type that breaks play up and gives the ball to his team mates who are better on the ball. If you played him like that week in week out, especially in a defensive formation, he would be a stand out player but put him in any other role and he will be very inconsistent.

Good luck with that Bill, the thing is though it doesn't really matter how many years Martinez has on his contract, if the right offer comes in for him from the right team he will go.....if HE really wants to.

A Spanish giant, or a Russian/Arab oil barron will pay off any existing contract for the man they want.

Our hope as Evertonians must be that Martinez will see a great future at Everton and that guiding a club like us to big things is possibly more of an achievement than maintaining the success of some rich win everything club.

When he does eventually leave, let's hope he's done a brillaint job.

That was a well deserved win in my book. We didn't miss Fellaini at all and bossed large portions of the game. Even we were at 1-0 we had enough about us to see the game out without having to hang on with 11 men in defence. When we had the ball we were looking to attack with Mirallas, Jelavic & Naismith which was good to see and we managed to keep it tight at the back like we have done all season under Martinez. Chelsea managed to put together some decent attacking moves but all of them were dealt with well by our back four.

We're still un-beaten and we now have our first win under Bobby, there is a long way to go but all the signs are positive.

Howard - Pretty poor to be honest, nearly gave away a goal in the first-half because he was dicking around with the ball rather than clearing it and looked very indecisive (as always) when coming to collect aerial balls. He made some good saves but that isn't enough against teams like Chelsea.

Coleman - Fantastic, looked solid at the back and was rapid going forward. He had the pace to get round Cole and did it time and time again, he linked up well with Naismith too and brought him into the game.

Distin - Solid as always. He did what he had to and kept Eto'o quiet (who looked completely shit all game).

Jagielka - In the first half he looked fucking awful as whenever he had the ball he would hopelessly hoof it up-field to either David Luiz or John Terry. After about 20 minutes he stopped it and put in a good shift for us.

Baines - Linked up well with Mirallas and was always a threat going forwards. Tore Ivanovic apart at times.

Naismith - He did a job in terms of breaking up Chelsea attacks and was the man to score us the goal but for me he looked quite poor today. Many attacks stopped with a poor pass from him and I feel that had we a player of quality in his position today we might have scored more (or at least had more chances).

Osman - Shit in the first half and average in the second. He seemed to get tired after about 70 minutes and then seemed to just sit back and hold the fort (which was fine). He actually looked better when we were all out defence than when we were going for 1 and 2-0. Once James McCarthy has settled in I'm hoping Osman and he swap roles.

Barry - Fuck me. Man of the Match. That's one of the best debuts I've ever seen. We would have conceded had it not been for him diving across the line when Howard fucked up and was excellent both in attack and defence. To sell Fellani for £28,000,000 and bring him in on a loan is fantastic business if he can replicate what he did today. My MOTM by a long way.

Barkley - I love how he always looks a threat going forwards and always wants to take people on but a few times today he actually broke up attacks by not passing the ball. Many times we would counter-attack Chelsea, have Mirallas free on the left and Barkley would try and take on both Terry & Luiz. It's fantastic that a kid of his age has so much confidence but he needs to understand that football isn't a one-man game.

Mirallas - I love Mirallas and he had a great game as always today. He was taking players on left, right and centre and linked up well with Baines down the left. When Jelavic went off he went up front and looked alright there, he held the ball up well when we wanted to hold out for 1-0 and seemed to handle the pressure of being our only man up top well.

Jelavic - Shit. Didn't do much and Mirallas looked a much better striking option than him even though Mirallas was heavily fatigued. If he continues in this kind of form he can go for me in January, he's been very average now for 12 months and more.
