Just been reading back through my comments about Stones and thought i need to clarify something.

I am in no way writing this guy off, at least i am not meaning to. I think the lad is a real good prospect and will be a long term first teamer.

As a player myself i try to put myself in positions that i notice when watching the blues and admitedly my own ego takes over and i tend to think i can ready what they were trying to do.

An example is watching Seamus recently. The guy has been an absolute star! scoring goals and rightly getting the plaudits. I then watched a match with him facing his own goal and holding of an attacking player. there was an easy simple pass to the centre back waiting for him but he decided to hold the player off and look for a better pass. He actually managed to turn the player and come out unscathed. The commentators commented on what good play it was..... but for me it was lucky and naive. i thought to myself he is starting to believe his own hype and could get into trouble trying that too many times. Now watch him next match and see if you can see what i mean or if i am being too critical.

Coleman is my favourite player at the moment. Love the guy.

When watching Stones i love his confidence. he looks tidy and good technically.

I also notice him getting caught in possesion cheaply, which it seems i am on my own with that one last night. I want to watch the match again to make sure i am not mixing him up with the wrong player but i am sure he got caught out a few times last night. I have also noticed this in the last few matches on several occasions. I am also sure he hasnt only played CB and trained as one this season. He has played as a full back and looked ok.

He is learning and getting better, but i think it's also important to discuss weak area's, the same as we do for all young and old players.

fair enough, but 1 game where he is supposed to be covering Suarez and then saying he isnt the RB we need is still harsh in my opinion.

Dont get me wrong, hes definitely better suited to the DC role but he can defend well in the RB role too. Not the same type of RB as Coleman, but at 19 with 5 games under his belt, Im happy with him to keep covering until Coleman comes back.

I don't think Stones had a bad game at all. He did well on the right, got forward and ran back and defended. He is young and has a lot to learn. Getting thrown into the biggest game of his career would be daunting for anyone but overall I am happy with his performance. Jags and Alcaraz both had a shocker, no communication between the two of them. Least with Distin and Jags, Jags knows Distin will run fast back and then Jags can keep an eye on his man. Playing two slow CBs was our problem. It is one game though lets remember that. Second half we came out fighting but we needed the big man playing to have any chance of getting a goal.

Don't get me wrong Naismith is a hard worker and I do like him but as a striker not as much. Against Villa I would like to see Mirallas as the striker and Naismith as a winger...

Neither do I :)

I hope he's right because there's every chance a result of that manner could derail our season.

I'm hoping it does the opposite and pushes us to get back to the levels we showed earlier in the season (I don't think we've played well for a good few weeks) and we go on a bit of a run. It's what we've done in the past and we can do it again.

after the last Derby we tightened up very well, Im hoping for the same reaction.

I think this is Robertos first real test as an Everton manager especially if Lukaku is going to be out for a while, not that hes offered much recently

It could be the kick up the arse the we needed just a shame it had to be such a painful one

It definitely is. We all knew he'd face a test like this sooner or later and now we've just got to watch and hope he reacts well to it.

Painful indeed :(. A walloping like that has been coming but why did it have to be given to us by that lot?!

If I'd wanted to watch car crash TV then I’d have watched Big Brother. Instead I had to watch our lovely neighbours dismantle us with total ease.

Putting our walking wounded straight into the starting line-up spectacularly backfired with not one of them having a good game. In fact, they were all awful and the blame for that has to lie with Martinez. I think he played the occasion and got caught up in it. I will always advocate playing a player of lesser ability who is 100% fit over the better player who is say 70% fit. I can understand why he threw Barkley back in, to a certain extent, because he was hoping it being a derby would push Barkley through and make him play above his fitness level. I can also see why Jagielka was played. He was taken off against Stevenage more as a precaution than anything and we really needed some experience back there. But Pienaar and Alcaraz? No, I cannot understand those whatsoever. We all know Pienaar is someone that takes time to get rid of his rustiness, and he is getting on so that time is only increasing, so why put him in? He was complete shite, so off the pace it was embarrassing. Before the game I was pleased that it was Alacaraz over Distin but I’d have preferred Stones to have played there over him because Stones has been playing regularly and was up to speed. Hibbert could (and should, IMO) have played right back. He’d just played a full game so he’d have been much more in the swing of things!

So we were left with a patched up defence and an attack that was completely toothless. How on earth do you expect to have any sort of success with that combination? You won’t and we didn’t. We were so slow and without any idea of how to get through the shite, all they had to do was get organised in front of us, sit back and wait for us to give the ball to them, and then pick us off on the counter. Which they did, with frightening ease. We asked them no questions but they still gave us plenty of answers.

Martinez got it wrong before the game but these are still professional footballers and some of their play was shameful and embarrassing. I was left in a state of shellshock watching. I spent most of the game in complete silence.

Now we wait to see what sort of response the players give. Villa isn’t the best team to be playing to be honest, with them being another counter attacking side, but hopefully we can take the three points.

Howard – Made a few early saves to mean they didn’t take the lead sooner.

Stones – A very bad night at the office for him. It wasn’t all his fault, with sloppy passing from others making him look worse than he probably was, but I don’t think he played well either. Pushed up the field well but he really didn’t offer anything as an attacking threat. It was like he was so determined to be gung-ho pushing up that he forgot he’s also there to defend and he was caught out badly a few times. I just think it was naivety and eagerness to prove his worth. He’ll learn.

Alcaraz and Jagielka – A comedy duo in all honesty. Their lack of pace, and match sharpness in Alcaraz’ case, were exposed brutally. Not to mention there was zero cohesion between the pair of them. They didn’t seem to have a clue of anything that was going on around them. They were utterly destroyed. I cannot tell you just how many times this pair left me with my head in my hands during the game.

Baines – Probably the only one of our defenders who wasn’t completely murdered but he offered nothing going forward really. It was a wet fart of a performance.

Mirallas – Of our starters he’s the only one who comes out of the game with any sort of credibility. Right from the start he was bright and probing, and looking to do everything at speed. Every time he got the ball he caused the shite problems and they were clearly scared at what he might do. As has been said by others, he’s usually one who gives up when things aren’t going his way, but not last night. He kept going right to the bitter end. I do think he maybe could have given Stones some help in the first half but, then again, he was having to be our entire midfield and forward line for the whole game!

McCarthy – Another disappointing game from him I thought. Other than a couple of forward runs toward the end of the game he was anonymous.

Barry – He was a liability in the middle of the park in my eyes. His passing was atrocious and the shite got around him far too easily, meaning they either got a free run at our “defence” or he had to give a foul away.

Pienaar – Shite. Surprised he lasted 45 minutes.

Barkley – I’ve noticed a few people saying he had a good game… I can’t agree. He just wasn’t completely and utterly crap. That doesn’t mean he had a good game. He was a passenger. Not his fault like but he did not play well.

Lukaku – Other than show his usual prowess at close control he contributed nothing before he got injured.

"Liked" the post Mark because you put the time in to write it.....but I didn't like it :(.

Minor upside for me though is that Josh's new home shirt (with Oviedo on the back) arrived this morning and he wore it to college despite knowing he'd get a lot of stick.....I like that :).

Can understand that, I didn't want to write it but I saw it as therapy :P.

Good news on the shirt front finally! Think I'll get Oviedo on a shirt next season myself.

fair play to him...the result only hurts me on a personal front as i only have 1 koppite friend and he's away at work during week...not coming from merseyside has it's advantages sometimes

Said it was a big game for Martinez and so it proved, but I think he's the type of person who will work night and day to improve this squad, not maybe short term but ready for next season. We were playing players who needed more time, but they were obviously our/his best option, sad as it may be.

I will add one thing, a fully fit Everton could have beaten the rs last night, we would have had to work hard in defence but it could have happened.

Martinez says you can learn more from a defeat than a victory, I'm looking forward to The Villa team sheet.

I never said it was alright but if you are going to celebrate in front of the away fans you will never stop things like this. Regarding the crushing I'm sure had we won 4-0 you probably wouldn't have had a complaint

The coins were thrown before the corner from where the first goal was scored, no excuse. matter of time before some idiot blinds someone.

As they killed us on the counter last night I hope Martinez has learned from both the defeat last night and also from any recent scouting of Villa...... they make Liverpool (and most teams) look like they're on Zimmer frames when on the counter attack, particularly Agbonlahor and Weimann..... they are frigging rapid! Our only saving grace, if we adopt the same tactics as last night, might be they don't have a Suarez and Sturridge and Agbonlahor and Co. generally can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo... but every dog has his day....

As for the coin thing - Does any poster of a certain age on here recall the delights in the 1970s of the trend for World Stadium Football Darts where it was the done thing to smuggle darts into the game and fling them high in the air into the away fans area to see who they could impale? Bit like playing pin the tail on the Brummie, Cockney, Manc, Geordie or whoever was in the vicinity of it landing. The number of people being escorted round the pitch, with just the flight of the dart visible and sticking out of their skull, by St John Ambulance people, was a joke.

So, coins - all sounds a bit politically correct, to me, and holds a flagrant disregard for the state of the economy. Doesn't make it right, though, or even acceptable. The only thing that should be thrown on a football pitch is a wobbler when things aren't going your way. Shows you care, that.

It's not right the coin throwing etc but every time the shite score against us they are determined to celebrate in front of our fans, drives me mad I say it every season.

At Goodison Suarez scores the free kick does he go down to his fans sliding on his knees? No straight over to the Gwladys street lower bullens corner. Find it hard to understand players doing that, first thing I would be doing is celebrating with my own fans

As Haf said, the coin throwing was before the goal.
