it will be interesting when oviedo comes back if he plays LB some or if garbutt does when baines needs a rest or for rotation.

If Baines takes up Barrys role, I wouldnt mind seeing him playing LB with Oviedo as a LW.

Ball retention is one of Baines best attributes. He also looks for the slide pass more than the cross.

He can tackle, not great but good.

These are the attributes Baines has for the middle.

Like has a great cross on him and looks to get forward like Baines

I've never seen him play there but Baines as a DM just baffled me. I don't see any of his quality's being suitable for the middle of the park.

Me neither, and I was equally as baffled. But, if the aim is to get him to play like Lahm, then I understand a bit better though I will miss seeing him on the over or under lap

Would anyone else like to see Garbutt given a go as a winger? Vs Man City we had Hibbert and Coleman in tandem - killing off our attacking threat from the right as Tony hasn't got the legs and Coleman had no one to overlap as the winger. Garbutt looks pacy, confident on the ball, brilliant crosser and he can actually take a corner!!!

I fear we're going to lose him if we don't find a way to get him more game time. I think we'll regret it in future years if we don't make him fit now to eventually be Baines' successor.

Personally I think he's fine the way we're using him now.

Wing did coleman no harm I guess..couple of years until age catches up with Leighton

Exactly... he's not getting in at left back but that's only because we've got arguably the best in the league, like you say for at least 2 more years. Garbutt looks a gem to me and with not much on his contact we need to get him in some way as he'll have plenty of options in the Prem alone.

He needs games but playing him left wing is going to hinder us. If we are short with injuries then maybe give it a go but otherwise he just has to bide his time and take the opportunities when he gets them.

Very good all round game tonight, a little naive at the back on occasions and could have picked a better pass here or there but at this stage of his first team career it was an excellent display.

He needs to wait his turn. He's behind the best left back in the league loan him out for a couple of seasons. Won't do us any harm.

Like c1982 said he's out of contract next summer so pissing him off would be a bad idea; he needs a new deal pronto. Then maybe loan him out to a top championship team.

Wasn't aware he was on such a short contract so that seems to be the next step and like you say we should get him tied down and loan him out. Even if it's for a season.... Like Coleman at Blackpool.

For me, Garbutt has to be Baines backup because we know Oviedo is versatile.

Thought some of his deliveries were pure gold. His deadball and moving crosses are beautiful. A more match fit Kone, he may have bagged one or two from those crosses.

But we're not in the business of loaning players to direct opposition, so won't happen.

If the likes of Burnley and Crystal Palace are our direct competition then we've got bigger issues than Luke Garbutt.

Anyway, I like what I've seen from this guy. I think you also have to be careful. Playing well at home against some random team from Russia is not even close to being the same thing as playing him against a Theo Walcott or Alexis Sanchez. I'm all for Martinez given Baines a rest against some of the lower teams and giving Garbutt a few starts.

yes i wish we had more squad rotation ala Arsenal. Arsene will put out youngsters and some questionable calls, but more time than not it pays off and eventually they see first team action.

I said direct opposition, not competition.

nothing to worry about, article said if we offer a deal he can't leave on a free till he's 24, so either he stays or we sell him for a nice lot, either way we are good. and the red shite can F right off, i hope they get relegated

He can still leave, we'd just be due compensation if we offer him an improved contract. But, we wouldn't get a lot for him I wouldn't have thought.

As Romey has already said we wont get a lot. If he wants to go we wouldn't be able to stop him and a tribunal would set a fee which would be buttons and a rival would get a real prospect off us for next to nothing.

Piss poor from the club letting it get to this stage yet offering much less (imo) promising players 3 year deals.

Baines just turned 30, the lad is 21. Need to start finding more time for him.

Baines has been our top performer this season - that's what's the stats say anyway.... He's way out in front on sqwarka. So whilst I agree Garbutt needs a new contract he also needs to wait his turn. I'm sure he'll continue to get some game time.

i don't mean swap Baines out. I mean, if we want Garbutt to sign a new contract, we need to give him more of a sign that he will be our regular LB.

How can we do that? He's not even close to the ability of Baines. I'm sure the lad knows his time will come he's 21 he's at a top club.

If Baines gets injured I'm sure he's currently next in line.

I just hope Oviedo gets back to the form he was in last season. He was terrific. You can be spoilt for choice at times so you can't keep everyone happy. Whatever happens we'll be left with at least two decent left backs

Not now, no. But the only way he will is to give him game time. He either needs to be the "cup game" LB or given a loan spell at another EPL team or Championship promotion contender like Coleman was done.

If we wait for Baines downfall, he will be around 24 when he gets his chance. I'd like to see him given a show-of-faith in one way or the other. Game time is the best option in my opinion.

This is always the difficult thing in the Premiership. How do you bleed in the youngsters? It's a tough one to do.

I would play him left mid - seriously. His quality of delivery is great, he can be mentored by Baines and interchange play. Ideal scenario for me. He will get a first hand view of Baines defence.

I'd go with that too. Means that the winger can actually defend and would potentially save money to strengthen other areas. Same goes for Oviedo too

Screen shot taken : Matt and Haf agreed.

It's one for the ToffeeTalk memoir collection.

So long as it doesn't involve Moyes, the board (kinda) and "you know who", we agree quite often. Just a shame that 90% of the debates between the 2 of us are related to these 3 topics
