Baines

Recommended Posts

Trying to keep emotions out of this and looking only at statistics, some numbers are revealing. Despite being regarded as one of the best and most consistent left backs in the EPL, some of Baines' numbers are rather poor. He wins 53% of ground challenges (second worst in the league) and 39% of aerial challenges. Compare this with Wigan's Figueroa, for example, who wins 67% on the ground and 59% in the air. Baines' passing accuracy stands at 72%, compared with Ashley Cole, for example, at 86%. On the other hand, Baines is very much an offensive player and more successful in this role than other players in the league. He created more than double the number of goal-scoring opportunities for Everton than did his peers for their teams. (The numbers are from the 2011/2012 season.)

While it's an obvious statement, I suppose, Baines' value to Everton depends very much on how he's played. With RM's 3-4-3 configuration, for example, he would thrive. Maybe, going forward, he should assume an even more offensive role.

Baines is one of the few players on the roster who is categorized as "home grown." If he does leave, this could create a bit of a dilemma.

Our squads not big enough to worry about having enough home grown players, can just make the numbers up with the kids.

Is this the Bill Kenwright that said he wouldn't sell Rooney for £50m....

Is this the same Man United that gave up the pursuit of Berbatov, RVP etc

Paper talk, They will come back in for him.

I thought it was interesting comparing the number of chances created and the number of assists stats: Baines has created signicantly more chances but still has the same amount of assists as Evra...

It would be more interesting to see the clear cut chances created rather than just chances created and assists. Baines puts a lot more crosses into the box than Evra, so lots of those chances created might not really be that much of a chance. Any cross one of our strikers got his head too will count as a chance, even the ones you can't rally expect them to score from.
